The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The

Llewellyn, Jr., City Administrative Officer Reference: 2020-21 Budget Subject: JULY 1, 2020, BUDGET ADJUSTMENTS SUMMARY Consistent with the City Council’s budget instruction for this Office to report frequently on the City’s financial status (C.F. 20-0600), this Office is transmitting restatements of various 2020-21 Budget exhibits. These restated exhibits reflect actions that the City Council and Mayor took subsequent to the 2020-21 Budget going into effect and retroactive to July 1, 2020. Thus, they reflect the initial appropriation for each stated line item. This should not suggest that conventional distribution and marketing methods are extinct, or that the traditional gatekeepers of these fields are obsolete. Rather it should indicate a merging of old and new strategies, practices, methods, and organisations, and it is through this fusion of tradition and novelty that today’s complex distribution landscape has emerged. As we tenderly emerge from the darkness of the past year, we are also aware that there is no “going back” to the way things were. If this is a difficult reality to accept, it also offers promise; undeniable issues rose to the surface during the pandemic that require our attention. Moving forward, may we continue to interrogate our individual and collective ways of living, to ensure they are sustainable, and that they promote peace and justice. BUILDING OUTWORDS’ CAPACITY Late last year, OUTWORDS received a $25,000 capacity-building grant from Gilead Science, focusing on two areas of operation: Development and Archive Optimization. Development is just what it sounds like: helping OUTWORDS create our first comprehensive 3-year fund development plan.
