i Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film by Alana Kornelsen A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2016 Alana Kornelsen ii Abstract This thesis examines the use of diegetic pre-composed music in three American lesbian feature films. Numerous trends can be noted in the selection of music in lesbian film broadly— music is often selected to draw on insider knowledge of the target audience of these films, creating cachet. This cachet comes with accompanying “affiliating identifications” (Kassabian 2001) that allow music to be used in the films’ construction of characters’ identities. This is evident in the treatment of music in many lesbian films: characters frequently listen to, discuss, and perform music. This thesis focuses specifically on riot grrrl music and the closely linked genre of queercore (which together Halberstam ([2003] 2008) refers to as “riot dyke”) in three films that focus on the lives of young women: The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (dir. Maria Maggenti, 1995), All Over Me (dir. Alex Sichel, 1997), and Itty Bitty Titty Committee (dir. Jamie Babbit, 2007). By examining how diegetic riot dyke music is used in these three films to build characters’ identities and contribute to the films’ narratives I argue that in these films, riot dyke music is presented as being central to certain queer identities and communities, and that this music (as well as the community that often accompanies it) is portrayed as instigating or providing opportunities for characters’ personal growth and affirming characters’ identities in adverse environments. -

Die Odyssee der Neuen Amerikanischen Filmheldin Dissertation im Fachbereich Philosophie und Geisteswissenschaften Freie Universität Berlin Irina Bodrow, M.A. Juli 2013 Erstgutachter: Prof. Dr. Winfried Fluck Zweitgutachter: Prof. Dr. Laura Bieger Tag der Disputation: 20.12.2013 iii Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit beinhaltet eine narratologische Untersuchung der Heldinnenreisen in einer Filmauswahl der Jahre 2009, 2010 und 2011. Diese narratologische Untersuchung basiert auf der Arbeit Morphologie des Märchens von Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp und un- tersucht systematisch einzelne Ereignisse der Heldenreise in ihrer Erzählabfolge während der Erzählung. Zur Untersuchung stehen neben Filmheldinnen auch literarische Heroinnen. Die verschiedenen Heldinnen werden anhand ihrer Motivation in drei Kategorien systema- tisiert: die Heimkehrerin, die Auswanderin und die Liebesheldin. In der Analyse werden die Heldinnen des Hollywood Kinos den Heroinnen der Independent Kultur gegenüberge- stellt. Letztere zeugen von einem spezifischen Frauenbild und einer Heldenreise mit anderer Ästhetik, anderen Zielen und anderen Charakterzügen als im Hollywood Film. Diese Fak- toren schlagen sich auch in der Struktur der Heldenreise nieder. In der Untersuchung der neuen amerikanischen Filmheldinnen diskutiert diese interdisziplinäre Arbeit Aspekte der Mythen-, Märchen- und Erzählforschung, der Film- und Kulturwissenschaften sowie der Frauenstudien. v Abstract The work at hand contains a narratological study of the heroine’s journey in a film selec- tion from the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. This narratological study is based on the work Morphology of the Folk Tale by Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp and systematically examines the constituent events of the heroic journey in their succession in the narration. In addition to the mainly cinematic heroines also literary heroines are subject of investigation. Three distinct heroine types are discerned by their motivations: the homecomer, the emigrant and the lover. -
