Identifying potential steelhead predators 1 INTRODUCTION Puget Sound wild steelhead were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2007 and their populations are now less than 10% of their historic size (Federal Register Notice: 72 FR 26722). A significant decline in abundance has occurred since the mid-1980s (Federal Register Notice: 72 FR 26722), and data suggest that juvenile steelhead mortality occurring in the Salish Sea (waters of Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the San Juan Islands as well as the water surrounding British Columbia’s Gulf Islands and the Strait of Georgia) marine environment constitutes a major, if not the predominant, factor in that decline (Melnychuk et al. -

welcome to Indian Country Take a moment, and look up from where you are right now. If you are gazing across the waters of Puget Sound, realize that Indian peoples thrived all along her shoreline in intimate balance with the natural world, long before Europeans arrived here. If Mount Rainier stands in your view, realize that Indian peoples named it “Tahoma,” long before it was “discovered” by white explorers. Every mountain that you see on the horizon, every stand of forest, every lake and river, every desert vista in eastern Washington, all of these beautiful places are part of our Indian heritage, and carry the songs of our ancestors in the wind. As we have always known, all of Washington State is Indian Country. To get a sense of our connection to these lands, you need only to look at a map of Washington. Over 75 rivers, 13 counties, and hundreds of cities and towns all bear traditional Indian names – Seattle, Tacoma, Yakima, and Spokane among them. Indian peoples guided Lewis and Clark to the Pacifi c, and pointed them safely back to the east. Indian trails became Washington’s earliest roads. Wild salmon, delicately grilled and smoked in Alderwood, has become the hallmark of Washington State cuisine. Come visit our lands, and come learn about our cultures and our peoples. Our families continue to be intimately woven into the world around us. As Tribes, we will always fi ght for preservation of our natural resources. As Tribes, we will always hold our elders and our ancestors in respect. Section 7: Water Quality SECTION 7 How is Puget Sound’s Water Quality Changing? Puget Sound is projected to experience a continued increase in sea surface temperatures, and continued declines in pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations. These changes, which could affect marine ecosystems and the shellfish industry, will be affected by variations in coastal upwelling and circulation within Puget Sound. While it is currently not known how climate change will affect circulation and upwelling in the region, these processes will continue to fluctuate in response to natural climate variability. Impacts on marine ecosystems and shellfish farming generally point to increasing stress for fish and shellfish populations. Efforts to address Puget Sound’s water quality are increasing, particularly in the areas of ocean acidification monitoring and implementation of risk reduction practices in the shellfish industry. Climate Drivers of Change DRIVERS Wind patterns, natural climate variability, and projected changes in temperature and precipitation can all affect water quality in Puget Sound.A Observations show a clear warming trend, and all scenarios project continued warming during this century. Most scenarios project that this warming will be outside of the range of historical variations by mid-century (see Section 2).1,2 Warming. The salinity of Puget Sound’s waters is tightly linked to freshwater inflows from streams. Increasing air temperatures will result in more precipitation falling as rain instead of snow, leading to more freshwater inflows into Puget Sound during winter months, and decreased freshwater inflows during summer. In addition, increasing air temperatures are expected to drive a continued increase in water temperatures, increasing the likelihood of harmful algal blooms (see Section 3). -

All proceeds will be set aside for a new Arts Center, which is in the early planning stages and will be built on the Port Gamble Reservation. Many regional artists have contributed works of art to be auctioned off during the event. Available pieces include: • A hand-carved canoe paddle with a butterfly art design crafted by Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal artist Floyd Jones. • Four limited edition prints from Makah artist John Goodwin. • A handmade shawl meticulously sewn by award-winning Cree First Nations artist, Chholing Taha. • A contemporary woven tunic made in the Coastal Salish tradition, designed by Port Gamble S’Klallam tribal weaver Darlene Peters and tribal elders. • “Don’t Jump Too Soon”—an original gouache painting of a salmon after a lure by noted artist Thomas Stream, who hails from the Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak. Event attendees will be treated to a dinner with dishes that include salmon, seafood, venison, and elk. The S’Klallam Singers and S’Klallam Youth Dancers will perform. Tickets to the “Evening of Northwest Coastal Art and Dance” are $50 per person and are available by calling 360-297-2646. -
