UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX INGEBORG HASSELGREN PHD IN MEDIA AND CULTURAL STUDIES CUTE AFFECTIVISM: RADICAL USES OF CUTENESS AFFECT AMONG ACTIVISTS AND ARTISTS SUMMARY This thesis approaches cuteness as an aesthetic and affective genre which inspires intense feelings of softness and kindness, as well as aggression and possessiveness. It investigates the affective properties and uses of cuteness, the embodied experiences of interacting with cute animals and objects, along with the feelings of performing cuteness. Contrary to earlier research, which tends to discard cuteness as meaningless, demeaning and manipulative, this research shows how it can also function as radical, empowering tool for political activists and artists. Of particular interest is the political and resistive uses of cuteness, analyzed in three case studies. The ethnographic materials are collected on site in Sweden and in the UK, through a "mobile ethnography". This consists of shorter fieldworks centered on specific events; the Internet Cat Video Festival; Cuteness Overload - a feminist performance art project; and two cute-themed night clubs held at a leftist culture centre. The fieldwork emphasized multisensorial experiences of cuteness, focussed on participant observations along with interviews, focus groups and limited textual analysis. Drawing on affect theory, it understands cuteness as a relational category, emerging between subjects and/or objects. Of specific interest is the queering properties of cuteness functioning on several levels. It inspires radically lateral relationships between oppressed subjects; helps create safe utopian spaces; and lastly, it opens up new ways to experience and relate to one’s own body. However, cuteness, like all aesthetic genres, is subject to the politics of taste. Not all cuteness production or consumption is given the same recognition. There exits then, a hierarchy of cuteness wherein some producers/consumers, and some expressions of cuteness, are more well-regarded than others. Ultimately, the thesis concludes, cuteness has the potential for radical transformation, but as it exists on an uneven playing field, this potential cannot be readily unlocked by everyone, at least not to the same degree. Extremist Manifestation: Translation of Conspiracy Theories Ayan Mohammed, Amanda Garry, Rukaya Mohamed, and Antoine Andary November 2020 www.AmericanCTRI.org Abstract The surface-level risk behind conspiracy theories stems from the sheer distribution of misinformation. However, their ability to translate into continuous violence creates many concerns for P/CVE practitioners. Varying spectrums and degrees of extremists tend to cling to conspiracy theories as a means to push their political agendas during times of uncertainty as well as acquire newfound support. The following research paper seeks to not only uncover common conspiracy theories leveraged by extremists, but also the manifestations and implications of such theories when coupled with violence. Additionally, the role of social media and the internet as a mobilization tool for conspiracy theory rhetoric and countermeasures is examined. This research paper will also highlight the overarching need for additional resources and attention within the realm of extremist manipulation of conspiracy theories. This work is premised on the educational philosophies of liberation, embodiment and freedom of the oppressed and the marginalised.

Kvinnan, kändisen, konfliktkatalysatorn Bilden av kändisen Anna Anka i svensk nyhetsjournalistik Maria Andersson Nicole Blomstrand Examensarbete 15 hp, Journalistik (C-nivå) Journalistik och medieproduktion 180 hp Handledare: Anette Forsberg Höstterminen 2009 Linnéuniversitetet Institutionen för samhällsvetenskaper Authors: Maria Andersson & Nicole Blomstrand Title: The women, the celebrity, the conflictcatalyzer, How the celebrity Anna Anka is viewed in Swedish newsjournalism Level: BA Thesis in Journalism Location: Linnaeus University Language: Swedish Number of pages: 50 Abstract The aim of this thesis was to examine how newspaper journalism represented the celebrity Anna Anka. Which roles and qualities did the media ascribe Anna Anka and in what way did the media frame her as a woman. We examined texts and photographs from two Swedish newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter, 16 texts were analysed. The method we used were discourse analysis with focus on relations, identities and representation. The result showed that Anna Anka was represented in an essentially equal way in both newspapers. The image of Anna Anka seems to be multifaceted. In the texts Anna Anka becomes a symbol for conflicts that emerge in discourses regarding gender, celebrity and Swedish values. As a woman she is both portrayed as controversial and appearance-fixated. As a wife she is traditional, a woman who takes care of house and family and lets her husband be the provider. On the other hand she is described as a woman who does not follow the traditional norm, she is independent and has a possibility to support herself. As a celebrity, Anna Anka is framed as fairly new in the public appearance.

  • Zieff 1 the Problem of Sexualization
Zieff 1 The Problem of Sexualization: Not So Cute Ava Zieff Fordham University Rose Hill 2022 International Studies Major March 24, 2021 Essay Reworked From Taboo: Anthro of Forbidden (ANTH2500) Professor Goutam Gajula Zieff 2 Cuties sparks international controversy on the public transgression of child sexualization in film. The taboo of sexualizing children is culturally specific. George Bataille, in his book Erotism: Death and Sensuality, regards all taboos as applying to everyone but varying in degree and manifestation depending on cultural context. While children expressing their sexuality is not highly transgressive in every culture, in Senegalese-French and American society, childhood and sexuality must be kept separate. Children are viewed as too young and 'un-initiated' into the profane world of sensuality. Only once children make the transformation into the social role of adulthood can they exhibit sexuality. Girls are often prematurely indoctrinated by the internet, media culture, and society that becoming a woman means being valued for their beauty and their sex appeal. Cuties, a French film written and directed by Maïmouna Doucouré in 2020, follows 11-year-old Amy growing up and contending with her sexuality. This paper will examine the tension between Doucouré, Netflix, and critics on whether the film is socially beneficial or dangerous. Set against Bataille’s theory that normalization weakens taboo and limited transgression strengthens taboo, I will argue Cuties is intended to shock its audience, and if it does not, that even further emphasizes the problem of society hiding and ignoring child sexualization. The sensitive coming-of-age film chronicles the clash between Amy’s conservative family values and the allure of her liberal French classmates who are influenced by internet and media culture.

Gothenburg Women’s Museum Women’s experiences through time and space Julia Eriksson Lagerqvist Gothenburg Women’s Museum Women’s experiences through time and space Julia Eriksson Lagerqvist Master’s Thesis at Chalmers School of Architecture | Gothenburg, Sweden 2019 Department: Architecture and Civil Engineering | Master’s Programme: Architecture and Planning Beyond Sustainability Studio: Critical Spatial Perspectives | Examiner: Kristina Grange | Supervisor: Anna-Johanna Klasander Abstract It is nothing new saying that the women have been left out of the history books. The list of important, influential women that have been, and still are, excluded from the historical writing is long. This is not only an incorrect description of the past but also a democratically issue. This master thesis investigates architectural strategies to reactivate women’s stories in the collective memory of the city. The aim is to investigate how architecture can bring opportunities to create a truthful historical writing and support the equal rights between men, women and non-binary from different cultural backgrounds. It studies the relationship between the historical writing and the collective memory of Gothenburg, as well how architecture and space can create an intersection between the past, present and future. Furthermore, it is a pre-study for what a Women’s Museum could contain, what actors and initiatives that could be involved and how it could interact with the rest of the city. The design proposal has taken departure from three different methods: a case study analysis of Women’s Museums, historical study of women’s history in Gothenburg and a study of norm critical architecture theories.
