    Landslide near Eravikulam National Park drishtiias.com/printpdf/landslide-near-eravikulam-national-park Why in News Recently, landslides have been reported at the Nayamakkad tea estate at Pettimudy which is located about 30 km from Munnar, adjacent to the Eravikulam National Park (ENP), Kerala. Key Points Features of ENP: It is located in the High Ranges (Kannan Devan Hills) of the Southern Western Ghats in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki District, Kerala. It spreads over an area of 97 square km and hosts South India's highest peak, Anamudi (2695 m), in its southern area. The Rajamalai region of the park stays open to the public for tourism. History: The Government of Kerala acquired the area from the Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company under the Kannan Devan Hill Produce (Resumption of lands) Act 1971. It was declared as Eravikulam-Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary in 1975 and was elevated to the status of a National Park in 1978. Topography: The main body of the park comprises a high rolling plateau (plateau at different elevation or with varying heights) with a base elevation of about 2000 m from mean sea level. Three major types of plant communities found in the park are: Grasslands, Shrub Land and Shola Forests (mosaic of montane evergreen forests and grasslands). The park represents the largest and least disturbed stretch of unique Montane Shola-Grassland vegetation in the Western Ghats. 1/4 Flora: It houses the special Neelakurinji flowers (Strobilanthes kunthianam) that bloom once every 12 years and the next sighting is expected to be in 2030. Apart from that, it has rare terrestrial and epiphytic orchids, wild balsams, etc.

Tropical climate with plenty of sunshine and rainfall favours forests with rich biodiversity and endemism. Western Ghats, one of the Biodiversity hotspots, is running all along the length of Kerala and forms its eastern boundary. Increasing population and changing lifestyles of the people is exerting great pressure on forests. The greatest challenge faced by present day foresters is to accommodate developmental needs without causing destruction of its rich forests. A manager has to base his decisions on the available data/ information on the subject. The broader and the accurate data base better will be the quality of decisions and efficiency of administration.     Study Glows National Parks Of India Tamil Nadu NP Mukurthi National Park • Mukurthi National Park (MNP) is a 78.46 km2 protected area located in the western corner of the Nilgiris Plateau west of Ootacamund hill station in the northwest corner of Tamil Nadu state in the Western Ghats mountain range of South India. • The park was created to protect the Nilgiri tahr. Mukurthi National Park • The park is characterised by montane grasslands and shrublands interspersed with sholas in a high altitude area of high rainfall, near-freezing temperatures and high winds. • Animals-Royal Bengal tiger and Asian elephant, but its main mammal attraction is the Nilgiri tahr. The park was previously known as Nilgiri Tahr National Park. • The park is a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, India's first International Biosphere Reserve. • As part of the Western Ghats, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1 July 2012 Guindy National Park • Guindy National Park is a 2.70 km2 protected area of Tamil Nadu, located in Chennai, India, is the 8th-smallest National Park of India and one of the very few national parks situated inside a city. • The park is an extension of the grounds surrounding Raj Bhavan, formerly known as the 'Guindy Lodge', the official residence of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, India. It extends deep inside the governor's estate, enclosing beautiful forests, scrub lands, lakes and streams. Guindy National Park • The park has a dry evergreen scrub and thorn forest, grasslands and water bodies with over 350 species of plants including shrubs, climbers, herbs and grasses and over 24 variety of trees, including the sugar-apple, Atlantia monophylla, wood-apple, and neem.
