  • Mattupetty Dam Munnar, Kerala
Mattupetty Dam Munnar, Kerala MattupettyMattupetty Dam Dam Munnar Boating at Mattupetty Dam Located a little way off Munnar, the Mattupetty dam is a popular item on a day itinerary from Munnar. Dams all over the world, with their display of man's might over nature, have always attracted visitors. As have bodies of water. The Mattupetty dam and the lake as well, has therefore attracted a considerable number of travelers. Also, the fact that it is set in the backdrop of verdant rolling slopes, makes it ideal for a picnic, or just a small stop. Opened in 1953, the Dam is a concrete gravity dam. Not only is it a major tourist draw, but the hydro-electric power it generates is a major revenue source for the state of Kerala. The dam is well-maintained and the reservoir lake is clean. The gates of the dam are small, and even when open, the huge gushing noise of water characteristic of larger dams is absent here. Attractions and activities at the Mattupetty Dam 1. Boating: Speed boats are a must-do activity here. Majorly, because they are a good way to enjoy the beauty of the lake, and there is nothing much to do here, otherwise. As the boat moves along the water, the green reflections of the surrounding verdure, have a very calming effect on the passenger. 2. A stroll on the banks of the lake: The banks of the lake have just about enough trees to make the idea of a stroll through them inviting. One can always follow it up with a nice foot- dipping session at the lake.

Nowhere else in India could you find such an intriguing mix: giant fishing nets from China, a 400-year-old synagogue, ancient mosques, Portuguese houses and the crumbling remains of the British Raj. The result is an unlikely blend of medieval Portugal, Holland and an English village grafted onto the tropical Malabar Coast. It’s a delightful place to spend some time and nap in some of India’s finest homestays and heritage accommodation. Kochi is also a centre for Keralan arts and one of the best places to see Kathakali and kalarippayattu. Mainland Ernakulam is the hectic transport and cosmopolitan hub of Kochi, while the historical towns of Fort Cochin and Mattancherry, though well-touristed, remain wonderfully atmospheric – thick with the smell of the past. Other islands, including Willingdon and Vypeen, are linked by a network of ferries and bridges.

Landslide near Eravikulam National Park drishtiias.com/printpdf/landslide-near-eravikulam-national-park Why in News Recently, landslides have been reported at the Nayamakkad tea estate at Pettimudy which is located about 30 km from Munnar, adjacent to the Eravikulam National Park (ENP), Kerala. Key Points Features of ENP: It is located in the High Ranges (Kannan Devan Hills) of the Southern Western Ghats in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki District, Kerala. It spreads over an area of 97 square km and hosts South India's highest peak, Anamudi (2695 m), in its southern area. The Rajamalai region of the park stays open to the public for tourism. History: The Government of Kerala acquired the area from the Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company under the Kannan Devan Hill Produce (Resumption of lands) Act 1971. It was declared as Eravikulam-Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary in 1975 and was elevated to the status of a National Park in 1978. Topography: The main body of the park comprises a high rolling plateau (plateau at different elevation or with varying heights) with a base elevation of about 2000 m from mean sea level. Three major types of plant communities found in the park are: Grasslands, Shrub Land and Shola Forests (mosaic of montane evergreen forests and grasslands). The park represents the largest and least disturbed stretch of unique Montane Shola-Grassland vegetation in the Western Ghats. 1/4 Flora: It houses the special Neelakurinji flowers (Strobilanthes kunthianam) that bloom once every 12 years and the next sighting is expected to be in 2030.
