Monday 24th August 2015 This week, in studios across the continent, Africa’s first crowdsourced song was recorded by some of the biggest names for a global initiative to get the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to everyone on the planet. The Global Goals campaign, which launches next month, will release an All- African song, titled “Tell Everybody”, that aims to inspire young people to know their rights encompassed in the 17 goals and hold their governments accountable to their promises to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and climate change by 2030. Award-winning producers Cobhams Asuquo (Nigeria), David KING DAVID Muthami (Kenya) and Ellputo (Mozambique) have collaborated on a track which was recorded by Mafikizolo (South Africa), Becca (Ghana) and Diamond (Tanzania) in Johannesburg’s Jazzworx studio this week. Sauti Sol (Kenya) and Toofan (Togo) put their verses down on the track in studios in Nairobi and Lome and in the next couple of days, Mr Asuquo will travel to Lagos to capture the voices of Nigeria’s Yemi Alade and Wizkid. In order to ensure the song captured the voice of Africa’s Youth, the songwriters decided to crowd source two verses (one French, one English) for the song via a mobile phone competition, “Add Your Voice/Add Your Verse”, run by Every1 Mobile. During the two weeks that the competition ran, over 3000 people entered from 25 African countries. Cobhams Asuquo said, “We decided to let the young voices of Africa be heard in this song. Not only did we love the winning verses but all the entries informed the vision, lyrics and sound of the song.

Five Clips from Africa | norient.com 2 Oct 2021 11:12:51 Five Clips from Africa PLAYLIST by Georg Milz To start the new year ethnologist and journalist Georg Milz sent us a list with five music videos from all around Africa. He shows us some really nice clips between pidgin pop, hip hop pantsula and house, from Nigeria and Mozambique to South Africa and Kenya. By the way he is shaping coupé-décalé from – and that might be surprising – Geneva, Switzerland. Artist: Timaya (Nigeria) Track: Ukwu Pidgin pop music from Nigeria got coined the term Afrobeats with an «s». Even though unlikely Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, Afrobeats is rather unpolitical it is still the most celebrated soundtrack in african nightclubs of today, with a growing impact on global pop music. It fuses and borrows rhythms and melodies from all kind of genres such as Congolese Soukous, R'n'B, Afrobeat, Coupé-Décalé or South African House and spices them up with local lyrics in pidgin english and auto-tune effects. Artists such as P-Square, D’banj or Wizkid are among top selling artists and first stars of this african music movement being played in clubs in the US aswell as in Kingston Jamaica. Timaya is another upcoming star from the megacity of Lagos. With his hit single «Sonko» he recently put a spotlight on the dancehall culture of Lagos biggest ghetto Ajegunle. On his latest song called «Ukuw», meaning waist, he jumped on the bandwagon of Nigeria's state to the art afrohouse productions. This joint not only got us twerking in our office last year.

  • Not African Enough: Fashioning Africaness and Documenting The
Binyavanga Wainaina: The Writer Who Democratised Kenya’s Literary Space By Rasna Warah “Some birds should never be caged, their feathers are too bright. But when one such is finally set free, something inside of you sings that knows it was wrong to cage it in the first place.” – Red in Shawshank Redemption I first met Binyavanga Wainana in 2002 – an election year in Kenya when a hopeful country was looking forward to removing an authoritarian regime and ushering in a brave new world. He had just returned from South Africa and was scouting around for ideas for a literary journal that he hoped to establish to revive the dying (if not dead) literary scene in Kenya. It was during these heady days—when it seemed that anything was possible – that Binya, as he was fondly called, came back home like a gust of fresh air that sweeps through a damp, mouldy room and changes the atmosphere. His enthusiasm was infectious. He could mesmerise an audience so much so that many aspiring writers, including myself, who never imagined having a literary career, began writing their own stories, in their own voices, with no apologies. With the launch of his brainchild, the literary journal Kwani?, in 2003, he unveiled talented and previously closeted writers who had been silenced not just by a government afraid of creatives, but by a stodgy old school literary fraternity that saw no value or merit in the writings of those they deemed to be too unschooled or undisciplined. As the blogger and academic Wandia Njoya stated in a tweet shortly after his death, Binyavanga “liberated our art from the literature police in Kenyan universities”.

  • And Their Hold on East Africa's Popular Musical
The ‘Waswahili’ and Their Hold on East Africa’s Popular Musical Culture By Stanley Gazemba Port cities are melting pots of culture world over. They spur the evolution of new cultures, languages and act as gateways to the world. It is within this context therefore that taarab, a distinct music form that defines East Africa internationally, found fertile ground along the vast coastal strip that was previously the domain of the Sultan of Zanzibar. The East African Coast has had a profound effect on the hinterland in terms of trade and cultural development and is home of the Swahili civilisation that came into strength during the Daybuli period between AD 900 and AD 1200. It is the Swahili who controlled the region’s trade from AD 1200 and bequeathed modern East Africa its lingua franca, the Swahili language and left their mark on the musical cultures of the inland indigenous peoples. A sensuous melodic music deriving from diverse cultures that impacted the coastal culture over the years, taarab easily takes centre-stage in Swahili culture. While it is not necessarily amongst the oldest music forms in the region, given that ethnic groups in the hinterland had been creating music on reed flutes and thumb pianos for generations, taarab is amongst the earliest to be recorded commercially and exported from the region. Performed and recorded for nearly a century now, taarab, which has its origins in the Arab court music of nineteenth-century Zanzibar, owes its development to the political class of Zanzibar. Sultan Said Barghash, who ruled Zanzibar between 1870 and 1888, is credited with introducing taarab to the East African coast and shepherding its growth into the cross-cultural mélange it has become today.

  • A Feminist Critique of Nerea
International Journal of Liberal Arts and Social Science Vol. 3 No. 6 August, 2015 Our Pregnancy, My Choice: A Feminist Critique of Nerea Dr. Joy Mueni * Lecturer, University of Nairobi, P. O. Box 58070 - 00200 Nairobi - Kenya Email: [email protected] Ms Louise Omollo Post Graduate Student, Egerton University, Kenya Email: [email protected] *Corresponding Author Abstract The role of media in the fight for the rights of women across the globe is a major interest in contemporary scholarship. While Kenya as a country is making commendable steps towards lifting the status of women through legislation and education, gender equality remains elusive. Feminism has over the years sought to define and defend equal rights of women in social, economic and political spheres. One means to this end is to uncover ways in which dominance and oppression of women are often masked in aspects of our daily lives; through ideology passed down through generations in very subtle ways. This paper therefore uses critical discourse analysis to critique the portrayal of the woman in Nerea, a contemporary music video on abortion. The emphasis is on how patriarchal gender ideologies perpetuate oppressive stereotypical views on the place and role of women in society. This study therefore recommends that depictions of women in media and other social commentary be examined critically. It is often in very covert ways, some intended to achieve the contrary effect that the battle for gender equality is lost. Key words: Feminism, Ideology, Abortion, Kenya 1. Introduction There have been shifts in the dynamics of gender power relations within the family in Kenya in the recent past according to Wamue–Ngare and Njoroge (2011).
