Afonso3, and Rafael Zardoya1 1Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC), Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biologia Evolutiva 2Universidad de Cadiz, Departamento CMIM y Química Inorgánica – Instituto de Biomoléculas (INBIO) 3Universidade do Algarve, Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) Cone snails form one of the most diverse families of marine animals, including more than 900 species classified into almost ninety different (sub)genera. Conids are well known for being active predators on worms, fishes, and even other snails. Cones are venomous gastropods, meaning that they use a sophisticated cocktail of hundreds of toxins, named conotoxins, to subdue their prey. Although this venom has been studied for decades, most of the effort has been focused on Indo-Pacific species. Thus far, Atlantic species have received little attention despite recent radiations have led to a hotspot of diversity in West Africa, with high levels of endemic species. In fact, the Atlantic Chelyconus ermineus is thought to represent an adaptation to piscivory independent from the Indo-Pacific species and is, therefore, key to understanding the basis of this diet specialization. We studied the transcriptomes of the venom gland of three individuals of C. ermineus. The venom repertoire of this species included more than 300 conotoxin precursors, which could be ascribed to 33 known and 22 new (unassigned) protein superfamilies, respectively. Most abundant superfamilies were T, W, O1, M, O2, and Z, accounting for 57% of all detected diversity. -

Join us for registration on campus followed by a welcome reception in historic downtown Fullerton on the evening of Thursday, June 25th, followed by a stimulating schedule of symposia, contributed talks, and a poster session from Friday, June 26th to Saturday, June 27th. We are delighted that many of you will join us for a field trip to Catalina Island on Sunday, June 28th. The Western Society of Malacologists (WSM) was born in 1948 as the Pacific Division of the American Malacological Union (AMU), now the American Malacological Society (AMS). The Pacific Division of the AMU held separate meetings on the west coast in years when the AMU met on the east coast. The WSM was established in 1968 as an independent society to improve our understanding of molluscs, and members include professional researchers, students, collectors, and other mollusk enthusiasts. A primary goal of the WSM is to encourage students to enter into the field of malacology and to support their research via grants. -

In spite of this endemism, and in spite of the rarity of some species, the snails and slugs are one of the most poorly known groups. We present the first comprehensive overview of the land mollusk fauna of the Channel Islands, along with the results of recent intensive inventory studies. Surveys on San CleMente Island have increased the nuMber of land mollusk species known from that island by 50%, and a single survey trip to Santa Rosa Island more than doubled the nuMber of species known on that island. More additions to the land snail and slug fauna are certain for the poorly surveyed northern Channel Islands. This new information has provided insight into trends in species diversity and bio- geographic patterns, with marked differences in species composition between the northern and southern islands. Our surveys to date suggest a strong link between the recovery of native vegetation on the islands and the population status of land snails and slugs, with substantially larger nuMbers of native Mollusks on those islands that have been free of nonnative mammals the longest. -

A new species of the helminthoglyptid genus Cahuillus Roth, 1996 from the Mojave Desert of southeastern California, is described as Cahuillus fultoni n.sp. It lacks the dart sac and associated mucus glands of the female system found in all other members of Cahuillus including Eremarionta rowelli unifasciata (Willett, 1930), which is herein reassigned to this genus and elevated to species status as Cahuillus unifasciata. Sequence comparisons support the new species as distinct from other available taxa, based on combined analysis of 16S and COI mitochondrial gene regions for Cahuillus fultoni and four of the nominal taxa of Cahuillus or Eremarionta Pilsbry, 1913 within the Mojave. Although a relevant species, Cahuillus greggi (Miller, 1981), remains unsampled, the estimated phylogeny supports a sister species relationship between C. unifasciata and C. fultoni.
