The sale topper was the outstanding young Ram Alpine Caspar, born in August, 2015. By the renowned Ben Lomond, known internationally as Toby, he is Group 2 for Scrapie resistance and had previously been selected for semen collection for New Zealand. After a strong bidding battle between a number of breeders, the winning call of 4,900 guineas came from Remarkable Valais Syndicate, Woodville, New Zealand. ALPINE CASPAR – SOLD FOR 4,900 GUINEAS The next lot in the ring was the outstanding female in the sale, Biner Nancy. Who made 4,000 guineas. A Swiss imported ewe born in March, 2014 and of outstanding breeding and quality, she provoked a fierce bidding war from several breeders, three of whom were on the telephone, resulted in her travelling home to Fife, Scotland with Glen Blacklock of Sanqhahar. BINER NANCY – SOLD FOR 4,000 GUINEAS The following lot in the ring was another outstanding female, this time the June, 2016 born Alpine Dominique, by Toby. With enormous show potential, she sold for 2,650 guineas to M A Jarman, Woonton, Herefordshire. The outstanding brood ewe, Zara who had been on a flushing programme for E T purposes was offered for sale open, and ready to breed again. Strong breeder interest again resulted in keen competition, with her eventually heading to Hampshire for 2,050 guineas, with Abigail Bolt and Emma Childs of New Forest Valais Blacknose Flock who also purchased the stock ram Alpine Rambo for 1150 guineas. There was, once again, an outstanding selection of April born E T ewe lambs sold at the foot of their recipient ewe. Berkshire based breeder Renee Snouckaert beat off all comers to purchase the top priced lamb, Alpine Elegance, a daughter of Highland Montana out the great Zara for 1,700 guineas; with another Scottish breeder Irene Steel of Thornhill, Dumfries taking her full sister, Alpine Enchanted, for 1,350 guineas. Leading the ram lambs at 1,150 guineas was the April born Alpine Elvis, another Montana sired lamb, this time out of Alpine Cindy, taking the journey home to Urmston, Greater Manchester with Miss S Coombes. This sale once again displayed the Valais Blacknose sheep to their full potential, and with customers from all over the UK showing keen interest the breed has undoubtedly established itself on the UK sheep breeding scene. The day was topped at 1,200 guineas by the May, 2015 bull Ardbeg of Hellifield, from Robert Phillip’s Hellifield fold near Skipton. By Uallach Ruadh 2nd of Pollock, he had been shown successfully several times last year and went home with D M Thorp, Baslow, Derbyshire. Female trade was pretty lively throughout. The Show Championship, judged by Norfolk breeder Jim Ayres, was awarded to Cairistiona Dubh 1st of Stockley from Peter and Sue Smith, Hertfordshire, but sadly, at sale time, bidding failed to live up to their expectations and she was withdrawn. Top price of 1,000 guineas was paid for leading Yearling Heifer, Morag of Marrick Park, from Julia Carr, Richmond, Yorkshire. This January, 2016 born heifer by Emperor Ruadh of Knockendon, went home with N Goodwin, Belper, Derbyshire, who was also in for Julia Carr’s second prize winning Yearling Heifer Kaitlin of Marrick Park another Emperor daughter, this time born in May, 2016. Two outfits shared the leading price for Cows and Calves at 1,000 guineas. Firstly, Diorbhail 1st of West Edmondsley a January, 2011 cow from Edward Halford, County Durham with heifer calf at foot, went to G and M Mault, Denbighshire; followed immediately by Seonag 3rd of Bien Esk, a May, 2013 cow from Arthur and Suzanne Hill, Much Wenlock, who, with her bull calf at foot, went to Simon and Emma Hayley, Eggleston, County Durham. Averages: Two year Old Bulls £1,234 Yearling Bulls £431 Cows and Calves £1,008 Two and Three Year Old Heifers £546 Yearling Heifers £724.50 BEESTON STALL MARKETS Will continue to be held each Wednesday, but there will be NO Stall Markets on Bank Holiday Mondays. 12681 SHUBS, TREES & CONIFERS WEDNESDAY Auctioneer Jonathan Farrall 07796952948 “Another ‘blooming marvellous’ entry of shrubs.....” Trade not just to the dizzy heights of last week, but if it looked good, it sold well once again. The more unusual lots attracted strong competition as did anything in bloom, however, those plants going past flowering realised lower prices and were generally harder work. A few sample prices listed below but this really is the “tip of the iceberg”, why not come and see the plant section for yourself – we think you’ll be surprised (pleasantly!)
