The purpose of the study was to collect information about Bosnian resettlement and to elicit the recommendations of service 'providers about the content of pre-arrival orientation for Bosnian refugees. Since July 1994 the U.S. Department of State has funded the International Catholic Migration Commission to provide cultural orientation to U.S.-bound refugees from Bosnia. An overwhelming conclusion from the survey is that services available for Bosnian refugees vary widely by area and sometimes by refugee. In addition, the favorable climate for legislative reform could rapidly make current information obsolete. It is difficult to make generalizations about refugee :services in advance of their arrival. English classes are generally available, and the voluntary agencies are generally succeeding in placing Bosnians in entry-level jobs. The greatest adjustment challenges are in the areas of language, starting over, work, culture shock, and current events in Bosnia. Recommendations are made for programs in the United States and for enhanced preparation for immigration in Bosnia. The importance of cultural orientation is emphasized. Five appendixes provide supplemental information, including the agency questionnaire. While being consistent with the principle of patient autonomy stressed in many Western healthcare systems, full disclosure— particularly of life-threatening diagnoses and poor prognoses—is inconsistent with the cultural values of many ethnic communities within the United States. A systematic review of research ex- amining cultural preferences for disclosure of medical “bad news” was conducted. Results sug- gested that cultural preferences are more heterogeneous than has often been portrayed. Particu- larly when communicating with patients and families from culturally and ethnically diverse back- grounds, health care professionals should ask about preferences for receiving medical informa- tion and making treatment decisions. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public ii ABSTRACT: With the increasing prevalence of Indigenous discourses in the public consciousness, it becomes clear that the role of immigrants in the Indigenous-Settler dynamic has yet to be understood, and is particularly understudied in its Canadian context. However, given that nearly half of the population in the City of Toronto is composed of immigrants, it presents a rich research opportunity. As a Toronto-based immigrant from Former-Yugoslavia, I decided to conduct research with my own community. This thesis investigates the positionality of the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) Former-Yugoslav immigrants in the context of Indigenous-Settler relations. My research suggests that this community is situated within two ruptures of the Canadian nationalist narrative – paradoxical realms of multiple co-occurring imaginaries. As displaced peoples, they are privileged beneficiaries of the Canadian state while simultaneously being denied access to the Whiteness of the Canadian-Canadian ethnic identity. The ruptures are exposed by the relational positionality of Indigenous peoples to Former-Yugoslavs; in other words, Indigenous peoples play a central role in the identity of the GTA’s Former-Yugoslav immigrants.

One of the challenges important in the process of assimilating and acculturating is a “fundamental tension between ‘American’ and ‘Non-American’ identities’” that individuals experience on a daily basis. Adapting to a new culture changes how individuals act and feel, and influences one’s cultural identity. This study focuses on second-generation Bosnian youth living in St. Louis, Missouri, whose parents arrived in the United States some 20-25 years ago as refugees. The study explores the influence of ethnic identity on these youth’s feelings of belongingness, especially in regard to partial or total affiliation with either their ethnic or host community. Moreover, this paper seeks to explore how bicultural individuals’ ethnic identity is characterized and experienced by second-generation immigrant Bosnian-American youth.
