This year’s theme, “(De)constructing Boundaries”, critically assesses boundaries - physical, national, cultural, spatial, temporal, and disciplinary - between different spatial- temporal areas of study. As the concept of “Asia” continues to evolve, the construction and deconstruction of boundaries will enable redefinitions of collective knowledge, culture, and identity. -

This paper expounds the historical background at that time and how Min Bao created public opinion, and then clarifies why this magazine has had such a wide influence. Through introducing revolution situations and social ideological trends in foreign countries and infusing revolutionary thoughts into the readers, Min Bao inspired revolutionaries to fight for the revolutionary ambitions with the spirit of sacrifice and striving, thus helping them to shape their life value outlooks, form their revolutionary convictions and develop their revolutionary behavior patterns. 1. Introduction The Revolution of 1911 was a milestone in China's history. In reviewing the course of the Revolution of 1911, Sun Yat-sen spoke highly of the role of bourgeois revolutionary newspapers and magazines in promoting the revolutionary cause [1]. The bourgeois revolutionist Feng Ziyou once said, "The foundation of Republic of China should be attributed to the military actions and the propaganda by the Chinese Revolutionary Party, between which the propaganda was more powerful and widely-influenced." Among various bourgeois revolutionary newspapers and magazines, Min Bao played a great role in promoting the dissemination of bourgeois democratic revolutionary thoughts, eliminating the reformers' pernicious influence, of the reformists, facilitating the formation of the revolutionary spirit, and improving the revolutionary situation. -

Introduction The formation and subsequent actions of the Nazi government left a devastating and indelible impact on Europe and the world. In the midst of general technological and social progress that has occurred in Europe since the Enlightenment, the Nazis represent one of the greatest social regressions that has occurred in the modern world. Despite the development of a generally more humanitarian and socially progressive conditions in the western world over the past several hundred years, the Nazis instigated one of the most diabolic and genocidal programs known to man. And they did so using modern technologies in an expression of what historian Jeffrey Herf calls “reactionary modernism.” The idea, according to Herf is that, “Before and after the Nazi seizure of power, an important current within conservative and subsequently Nazi ideology was a reconciliation between the antimodernist, romantic, and irrantionalist ideas present in German nationalism and the most obvious manifestation of means ...modern technology.” 1 Nazi crimes were so extreme and barbaric precisely because they incorporated modern technologies into a process that violated modern ethical standards. Nazi crimes in the context of contemporary notions of ethics are almost inconceivable. -

The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

Newman 29 January 2008 2 Thesis Abstract The dissertation is a chiasmic reading of the works of Jean Genet and Emmanuel Levinas, examining the way they each address the relation to the Other in terms of ethics and subjectivity. Whereas a straightforward association between the two writers might seem paradoxical because of the differences in their approaches and rhetoric, a chiasmic reading allows intricate approaches, moments of proximity and departures to be read both conceptually and aesthetically. We show that these two writers share a tightly-woven discursive neighbourhood, and examine that neighbourhood through detailed analysis of various textual encounters. -

What are friends for?: The arts of making do and working out in Beijing, China Michelle Yang Zhang Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Michelle Yang Zhang All Rights Reserved Abstract What are friends for?: The arts of making do and working out in Beijing, China Michelle Yang Zhang Through a second look at the now twenty-five-year-old literature on guanxi, a form of reciprocal relationship making and using in China, I examine how the kinds of opportunities and challenges possible for young people intersect with who they know and how this has changed (with its own set of reflections on and consequences for a still-rapidly changing China) since China’s rural to urban transition. My dissertation project examines how young people in contemporary urban China form and produce guanxi ties (resource-full relationships) through the theoretical lens of practice and possibility, inspired by de Certeau’s conceptualization of practice, productive consumption, and strategies versus tactics (1984). Drawing on qualitative data gathered through participant observation and unstructured interviews, I sought to both describe and analyze when, where, and how social networks became consequential. Central to my methodology is an emphasis on people and their practices rather than the common sense categories used to describe them. The people in my field research were predominantly aged 18- 30 and came from a range of ethnic, professional, and education backgrounds. In so doing, I was able to examine the moments and contexts within which some people have opportunities and others do not, as well as when some are vulnerable while others are less so. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by St Andrews Research Repository 1 SELF AND OTHER IN CRITICAL INTERNATIONAL THEORY: ASSIMILATION, INCOMMENSURABILITY AND THE PARADOX OF CRITIQUE* Vassilios Paipais Paper accepted for publication in the REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES Abstract: This paper is principally concerned with the way some sophisticated critical approaches in International Relations (IR) tend to compromise their critical edge in their engagement with the self/other problematic. Critical approaches that understand critique as total non-violence towards, or unreflective affirmation of, alterity risk falling back into precritical paths, i.e. either a particularistic, assimilative universalism with pretensions of true universality or radical incommensurability and the impossibility of communication with the other. This is what this paper understands as the paradox of the politics of critique. Instead, what is more important than seeking a final overcoming or dismissal of the self/other opposition is to gain the insight that it is the perpetual striving to preserve the tension and ambivalence between self and other that rescues both critique’s authority and function. Vassilios Paipais is a research student at the International Relations Department of the London School of Economics and Political Science and an LSE100 Tutorial Fellow. DESCRIPTORS *Comparative Education; *Educational Philosophy; Educational Theories; Higher Education IDENTIFIERS *Postmodernism ABSTRACT This document defines the most important characteristic of postmodernism as an ontological shift from an essentialist view of one fixed reality to an anti-essentialist view where reality resists closure and consists of multiple diverse truths positioned amid continuous conflict. Five knowledge communities, based on postmodernist notions, and their advocates have made significant contributions to the field of comparative education. These contributory notions include:(1) postmodern deconstruction; (2) semiotic society;(3) radical alterity;(4) social Cartography; and (5) reflexive practitioners. After discussing each knowledge community and its chief educational advocates, the last position to be the most productive stance for comparative educators is proposed. It is suggested that reflexive practitioners are well positioned to compare and map multiple interpretations of social and educational life, and become cognizant of views from the margins. For this reason, reflexive practitioners may envision appropriate options for action and enlarge the scope of vision -
Miao Folk Music and the Marginal Modernism of Shen Congwen
Vol. 6 No. 4 Language and Semiotic Studies Winter 2020 Miao Folk Music and the Marginal Modernism of Shen Congwen Qianwei He Soochow University, China Abstract Shen Congwen (1902-1988) was a high-profile modern Chinese writer, and one of the most discussed Chinese writers within and outside China. For his whole life, he considered himself a “countryman”, different from his contemporary writers, and he employed his regional background to his advantage. His attention on the Miao ethnic culture in his home region, West Hunan Province, was constant. In the first half of the twentieth century, while the cities of China started to move towards modernity, the Miao people in West Hunan Province remained relatively primitive and marginalized. With his re-imagination and possible over-romanticism of the marginalized Miao culture, Shen became one of the most unique modern Chinese writers. This kind of marginalization in both folk music and literature clashed with modern China’s interest and need to revitalize its society. This paper will argue that, with the application of psychoanalytical and cultural anthropological theories, the folk music of a minority group that was incomprehensible to mainstream modern China exactly brought out the “marginally” modernist quality of Shen Congwen’s literary works. Introduction Shen Congwen (沈从文, 1902-1988) was a high-profile modern Chinese writer, and one of the most discussed Chinese writers within and outside China. He was born in 46 Qianwei He Fenghuang in West Hunan Province, a place embodied by the rich cultures of different ethnic groups, primarily the Miao people.
