At first glance, it doesn't look much like an Epidendrum. For one thing, Epidendrum stamfordianum has pseudobulbs. But other epidendrums, such as the familiar Epidendrum ciliare, also have the thickened stems that we call pseudobulbs. But even more unusual, the flower stalk on this' odd Epidendrum most often appears to emerge. from the base of the pseudobulb, rather than from the top, which is the typical flowering habit in the New World orchid subtribe .
