Brief outlines are provided for four literary periods; (1) the cry for freedom (1619-186c), (2) the period of controversy and search for identity (18(5-1015), (1) the Negro Renaissance (191-1940), and (4) the struggle for equality (101-1968). '*he section covering the Negro Renaissance provides a discussiol of the contributions made during that Period in the fields of the short sto:y, the essay, the novel, poetry, drama, biography, and autobiography.A selected bibliography of Negro literalAre includes works in all these genres as well as works on American Negro music.
