Yüksek Lisans Tezi, Ankara, 2016. Sanayi devrimi ile birlikte Britanya’da önemli sosyal, edebi ve ekonomik değişimler ve dönüşümler meydana gelmiştir. Kadının durumu, bunlar arasında en önemlilerden biridir. Sınıfları ve sosyal durumları ne olursa olsun Britanyalı çoğu kadın, isteyerek veya istemeyerek, içine doğdukları toplumun ataerkil kuralları tarafından onlara dayatılan itaatkar rolü kabul etmek zorunda kalmışlardır. Kadınların toplumdaki erkeklerle eşit haklara ve pozisyonlara sahip olma isteğinin, kadınların erkekleşmeye başlaması ya da ötekileştirilmesi ile sonuçlanacağı, o dönemde üretilmiş ve kabul gören bir düşünceydi. Dahası, benzer şekilde, kadınlar iş gücünü desteklemek amacıyla erkeklerin alanına girdiğinde, erkekler ile eşit maaşa ve haklara sahip olamadılar. Britanya’nın ve Britanya kolonilerinin, ayrıca birtakım Avrupa ülkelerinin farklı kesimlerinde hayatı deneyimlemiş biri olarak Egerton, eserlerinde Viktorya Dönemi kadınının farklı koşullarını yansıtmaktadır. Bu tezde savunulan, yazarın kadın kahramanlarının, bu dönemin cinsiyet rollerine ve kadın cinselliğine olan bakış açısına meydan okuduğu ve bu meydan okuma sırasında da, okuyucuya cinsiyet rollerinin yapaylığını sorgulattığı düşüncesidir. The Rise of Female Consciousness in George Egerton’s Selected Short Stories Within the Concept of ‘The New Woman’. Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2016. With the Industrial Revolution, remarkable social, literary, and economic changes and evolutions emerged in Britain. The condition of women was one of the most important one. Regardless of their class and social positions, most British women, willingly or unwillingly, had to accept their subservient roles which had been imposed on them by the patriarchal rules of the society in which they had been living. It was a constructed and accepted thought at that time that provided women who asked for equal rights and positions with men in society, it would result with either their masculinization, that was not supported, or marginalization. Furthermore, similarly, when women entered into men’s domain to supply for labour force, they could not achieve equal payment and rights with men. When they began to work and earn their own money and achieved their economic freedom, they demanded equality which was the result of women’s realization of their own capacities. As a consequence of this realization, ‘the New Woman’ concept emerged in the nineteenth century. This ‘New Woman’ was more able, more extrovert, and thereby freer than her antecedents. As a reflection of this concept, a new literary movement emerged under the same umbrella term ‘the New Woman’. Writers of this movement created their characters from middle class or working class women. In their works, they presented female heroines and the fight of those heroines against traditional gender roles. George Egerton (1859-1945) is also one of the representatives of ‘the New Woman’. Having lived in different parts of Britain and its colonies and also in other European countries, she reflects different conditions of Victorian women in her works. The argument here is that the female protagonists of Egerton challenged the Victorian view of gender roles and female sexuality, and while they are challenging, they also lead the reader to question the artificiality of these gender roles. Introduction. The Role of the Danish Critic Georg Brandes The age of Friedrich Nietzsche in Scandinavia came after the age of Émile Zola, to whom Scandinavian writers such as Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg were indebted with a view to naturalistic ideas and attitudes. Friedrich Nietzsche appears to me the most interesting writer in German literature at the present time. Though little known even in his own country, he is a thinker of a high order, who fully deserves to be studied, discussed, contested and mastered (Brandes 1915: 1). This is what the Danish critic Georg Brandes asserted in his long Essay on Aristocratic Radicalism, which was published in August 1889 in the periodical Tilskueren from Copenhagen, and this is the moment when Nietzsche became to be known not only in Scandinavia but also in other European countries. The Essay on Aristocratic Radicalism was the first study of any length to be devoted, in the whole of Europe, to this man, whose name has since flown round the world and is at this moment one of the most famous among our contemporaries (Ibidem: 59), wrote Brandes ten years later. The term Aristocratic Radicalism had been previously used by the Danish critic in a letter he wrote to Nietzsche himself, from Copenhagen on 26 November 1887: …a new and original spirit breathes to me from your books […] I find much that harmonizes with my own ideas and sympathies, the depreciation of the ascetic ideals and the profound disgust with democratic mediocrity, your aristocratic radicalism […] In spite of your universality you are very German in your mode of thinking and writing (Ibidem: 63).

Gee In Partial Fulfillment of The Requirement for The Alfred University Honors Program May 7, 2018 Under the Supervision of: Chair: Allen Grove Committee Members: Susan Morehouse Laurie McFadden Introduction As Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, a double major in English and Communication Studies, and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, I wanted to incorporate all of my interests and studies into my Alfred University Honors thesis. At first, the options felt limited since so many theses are long scientific studies with numbers, graphs, and a few unexpected discoveries. But after talking to my advisor and other professors, I realized that my thesis did not have to be anything like that and could be completely my own. This is when I decided that I would get creative and publish a book for which I would also write the introduction. I had published a book before in the class titled “Publishing Practicum” with Dr. Allen Grove and remembered not only the time and effort I put into the book, but how much I enjoyed the entire process. I was able to practice the skills that I learned in past English classes while editing and writing the introduction, and also incorporate my knowledge of InDesign while designing the layout. Knowing I liked every piece of the project and that it combined almost all of my areas of study made me sure that I wanted to do it again for this thesis.

    GEORGE EGERTON [Mary Chavelita Dunne Bright] (1859-1945) Mary Chavelita Dunne Bright, who took on the pen name George Egerton, was born in Australia in 1859. During her childhood she lived in New Zealand, Chile, Wales, Ireland, and Germany. After the death of her mother in 1875, she helped raise her younger siblings, living in Dublin, London, and New York. She moved to Norway with one of her father's friends, Henry Higginson, but returned to England and married Egerton Tertius Clairmonte, whose first name she adopted as part of her E.A. Walton. Bodley Heads No. 3: pseudonym. She took on "George" as a George Egerton. Drawing, 1895 The Yellow Book 5 (April 1895): 9. tribute to her mother, whose maiden name was "Isabel George" (Stetz, "Keynotes" 91). After divorcing Clairmonte, she married Reginald Golding Bright, a drama critic and theatre agent, in 1901. Egerton burst onto the London literary scene in 1893 with her first book, Keynotes, published by Elkin Mathews and John Lane at the Bodley Head in a 1 distinctive design by Aubrey Beardsley. In fact, because the short story collection's themes of sexual freedom, creativity, and independence were so emblematic of the 1890s New Woman, "Keynotes" also became the title of a book series Lane created later, once he was running the Bodley Head on his own. The series included 19 volumes of short stories and 14 novels – among them Grant Allen's The Woman Who Did (1895), Ella D'Arcy's Monochromes (1895), and Victoria Crosse's The Woman Who Didn't (1895).

In examining how these three popular novelists of the late nineteenth century responded to the challenge of female individualism, this thesis traces the complex afterlife of John Stuart Mill’s contribution to Victorian feminism. The thesis evaluates competing models of liberty and the individual – freedom and self-development – in the later nineteenth century at the outset and traces how these differing models work their way through the response of popular writers on the Woman Question. Ward’s Robert Elsmere (1888) and Marcella (1894) posit an antagonism between the New Woman’s individualism and marriage. She associates individualism with selfishness, which explicates her New Woman characters’ personal and ideological transformation leading to marriage. The relinquishing of individualism suggests Ward’s ambivalent response to the nineteenth-century Woman Question.

The version of literary history she knew—and, indeed, helped to construct—is far less varied, progressive, or inclusive than that constructed by scholars over the last several decades, in which the reaction against “Victorianism,” for instance, is seen to be already well under way at least a generation before the queen’s demise. Still, the motivating factors in this erasure have yet to be fully explored. It’s my belief that rethinking Woolf’s relationship to the immediate past in relation to new narratives about late-Victorian literary culture can lead us to new conclusions about where and how Woolf does or does not borrow from, resist, reframe, or reject the legacies of her precursors. As I’ve argued elsewhere, the active disavowal of what I call second-generation Victorian women writers, while certainly shaped in part by her familial context, is but one facet of Woolf’s broader and deeper drive to establish relations with an earlier, “greater” Victorian generation while bypassing an intermediate and, to her mind, imperfect one (Corbett).

Yet this Irish writer, whose work reflects her life PP 827–842. © 2014 on three different continents, is not usually credited with making THE JOHNS HOPKINS innovations in migrant fiction. Instead, critics tend to align her UNIVERSITY PRESS oeuvre not only with controversies surrounding decadence (such as the inclusion of her short story “A Lost Masterpiece” in the scandalous first issue of the Yellow Book) but also with the po- lemic about New Woman writing during the fin de siècle.1 Graced with one of Aubrey Beardsley’s earliest illustrations on the title page, Keynotes—which draws on English, Irish, and Norwegian settings—features a decidedly Scandinavian modernist style (one influenced by Knut Hamsun and Ola Hansson) and erotically assertive women protagonists.   • The Yellow Book: Introduction to Volume 10 (July 1896)
    THE YELLOW BOOK: INTRODUCTION TO VOLUME 10 (JULY 1896) In the summer of 1896, The Yellow Book’s tenth volume hit the stands, with 15 authors offering 17 verbal texts and 10 artists offering 15 visual texts. First-time literary contributors included Marie Clothilde Balfour, Eva Gore-Booth, K. (Katherine) Douglas King, Vernon Lee, Samuel Mathewson Scott, and Francis Watt. Aline Harland, wife of The Yellow Book’s literary editor Henry Harland, also contributed for the first time, under the pseudonym Renée de Coutans. Six of the 10 artists were also new. First- (and last-) time contributor J. Illingworth Kaye is represented by his new designs for the title- page and front-cover. He is joined as a new contributor by Katharine Cameron, sisters Frances and Margaret Macdonald, J. Herbert McNair, and Nellie Syrett. The fact that just over half the contributors appear in the periodical for the first time (13 out of 25), and the majority of them are women (9 of the 15 authors, and exactly half of the 10 artists), confirms that Volume 10 maintained the editors’ commitment to new and diverse authors and artists. Israel Zangwill, writing for the Pall Mall Gazette, is one of the only people to review the volume. He himself had been listed as a pending contributor in prospecti, but never actually appeared in the periodical. His response to Volume 10 was extremely positive, albeit somewhat disengaged. Declaring The Yellow Book to be “much better worth its price than most books of other colours,” he complements the fiction by past contributors Ella D’Arcy, Ménie Muriel Dowie, Henry Harland, and Oswald Sickert, as well as new contributors Balfour, Scott, and Lee.

    Engendering New Motherhood: Tactile Exchange in George Egerton’s Keynotes (1893) and Flies in Amber (1905) Isobel Sigley Abstract George Egerton’s Keynotes (1893) is a seminal text of the New Woman movement at the fin de siècle and has garnered significant critical attention over the last four decades. Egerton went on to publish four more volumes of short fiction, with decreasing popularity, the last being Flies in Amber (1905). This article addresses the shortage of scholarship on Egerton’s later writing by assessing the consistency with which she invokes moments of touch and object exchange as a means to radicalise motherhood in two popular and well-known early stories, “A Cross Line” and “The Spell of the White Elf” (Keynotes), and a less-known later story “Mammy” (Flies in Amber). Through tactile exchange, Egerton’s female protagonists establish a maternal network that challenges patriarchal hypocrisy and preserves their New Womanhood. By understanding Egerton’s valorisation of maternity as a “New Motherhood,” this article challenges claims of essentialism and accusations of conventionality in Egerton’s writing while reinstating the cultural value of her later publications.
