Canopy is a structurally complex and ecologically distinct ecosystem with its own processes, species and niches. Among the life forms that join together to form the canopy, epiphytes are one of the most important. This paper aimed to summarize important information about this sinusia and establish floristic patterns for the Brazilian rain forest. The majority of the epiphytes were monocots (63.5% of the species), followed by monilophytes (16.4%), eudicots (14.1%), magnoliids (4.5%) and Lycophytes (1.6%). The most species-rich families were Orchidaceae (45.8%), Bromeliaceae (12.9%), Polypodiaceae (5.5%), Araceae (5.0%) and Piperaceae (4.7%). The bioma supports possibly 3,300 epiphyte species, 69% of them registered for ecotonal zones, 60.6% for tropical rain forest, 42.4% for restingas and mangroves, 25.5% for seasonal forests and 22.5% for subtropical rain forest. Sections on history of the epiphyte studies, taxonomic composition, ecological importance, geographyc distribution, evolution and spatial distribution with up-to-date revision are also presented. Key words: Canopy, ecology, evolution, floristic diversity, geographic distribution RESUMO - (Epífitas vasculares – Histórico, participação taxonômica e aspectos relevantes, com ênfase na Mata Atlântica). • Pollen Morphology of Selected Species of the Subfamily Bombacoideae (Malvaceae Sensu Lato)1
Acta Botanica Brasilica 28(3): 352-360. 2014. doi: 10.1590/0102-33062014abb3482 Pollen morphology of selected species of the subfamily Bombacoideae (Malvaceae sensu lato)1 Vanessa Holanda Righetti de Abreu2, Claudia Barbieri Ferreira Mendonça2 and Vania Gonçalves-Esteves2,3 Received: 21 December, 2013. Accepted: 28 January, 2014 ABSTRACT We analyzed the pollen grains of 11 species within the subfamily Bombacoideae. The pollen grains were acetolyzed, after which they were analyzed and photographed under light microscopy. Unacetolyzed pollen grains were analyzed and photomicrographed under scanning electron microscopy. We studied pollen characters such as shape, size, exine ornamentation and aperture type. The species were separated by a pollen key, which considers the presence or absence of “calotte” in the pollen grains. This attribute separated Ceiba and Eriotheca from the other genera. Some species are differentiated by specific characters: in Bombacopsis glabra and B. stenopetala, the sexine is rugulate or “vermiculate” with isolated pilate elements; in B. calophylla, the pollen grains are sinu-aperturate; Ceiba speciosa show atypical, duplicolumellate sexine; C. erianthos is the only species with 5-colporate pollen grains and a pentagonal amb; in Pachira aquatica the reticulum has muri with spiculaspinulose muri (“reticulum cristate”). The variation in the pollen morphology confirms the eurypalynous status of the genera studied here. • Epilist 1.0: a Global Checklist of Vascular Epiphytes
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2021 EpiList 1.0: a global checklist of vascular epiphytes Zotz, Gerhard ; Weigelt, Patrick ; Kessler, Michael ; Kreft, Holger ; Taylor, Amanda Abstract: Epiphytes make up roughly 10% of all vascular plant species globally and play important functional roles, especially in tropical forests. However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong.

  • The Systematic Distribution of Vascular Epiphytes: an Update
Selbyana 9: 2-22 THE SYSTEMATIC DISTRIBUTION OF VASCULAR EPIPHYTES: AN UPDATE w. JOHN KREss Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 811 South Palm Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 33577 ABSTRACT. The list of vascular plant families and genera containing epiphytic species published by Madison (1977) is updated here. Ten percent (23,456 species) of all vascular plant species are epiphytes. Seven percent (876) of the genera, 19 percent (84) of the families, 45 percent (44) of the orders and 75 percent (6) of the classes contain epiphytes. Twenty-three families contain over 50 epiphytic species each. The Orchidaceae is the largest family of epiphytes, containing 440 epiphytic genera and 13,951 epiphytic species. Forty-three genera of vascular plants each contain over 100 epiphytic species. In 1977 Madison published a list of the vas those plants that normally spend their entire life cular plant families and genera that contain epi cycle perched on another plant and receive all phytic species. E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT Bird pollination in the Neotropical region is by far known as an important interaction to ecosystem function, but perching birds visiting flowers are still very often observed as merely opportunist visitors. Although these other birds do not rely only on floral resources, there are many plant species that do depend solely on them for pollination. These flowers display some features, including morphology and different kinds of resources, quite different from the ornithophilous flowers pollinated by hummingbirds. We review the syndrome of ornithophily in the Neotropical region and tear it apart into the two exploitation methods to determine the floral features that might favor pollination by hovering birds or by perching birds. We listed the Neotropical perching bird species mentioned in the literature as pollinators to take a look at that avian richness. We expect that as more studies on forest canopies are taken in the Neotropics, more interactions between perching birds and flowers may be observed and reveal its real role in the biology of both groups.

Mddison, wr,yconsin 53706, Usu AbstracL Somatic chromoserne numbers for representatives of three genera of neotropical Bombacaceae were investigated using meristematic cells of root tips, [[Xve of the three genera were investigated for the first time cytologically, and for the third genus, the chromosome count reported here is the first for the species studied. The chromosome numbers were 2n=96 in (lyrantheru cdribensis, 2n=88 in euaruribea aurantiocalyx, and 2n=88 in opirotheca rosea, In view of these results, the range of chromosome numbers for the traditional Bombacaceae, from 2n=86 to 2n=92, proposed by Baum and Oginuma (1994), should be extended to 2n=86 to 2n=96. For the entire Bombacoideae clade, which appears to include the genera Chiranthodendron and Fremontodendron, the reported numbers range from 2n=.40 to 2n=98, pending new counts from these two genera, Key words: Bombacaceae, Bombacoideae, chromosome number, cytology, Malvoideae ReceivedAugust 10, 1999; acceptedAugust 3a 1999 As traditionally circumscribed, the family Bombacaceae (order Malvales) comprises approximately 30 genera and 250 species of mainly tropical trees. Historically, the family was classified into four to five tribes, e.g., Bombaceae, Catostemateae, Ceibeae, Durioneae, and Matisieae (Thkhtajan, 1997).
