ANTECEDENTES HISTÓRICOS E CULTURAIS O bacurizeiro (Platonia insignis Mart.) é uma espécie arbórea de dupla aptidão (madeira e fruto), nativa da Amazônia Brasileira. Os frutos dessa Clusiaceae, pelo sabor e aroma agradáveis, são bastante apreciados pela população da Amazônia e de parte do Nordeste do Brasil, em particular dos Estados do Maranhão e do Piauí, onde a espécie também é encontrada espontaneamente. Em termos de sabor, o bacuri é considerado por muitos como a melhor fruta da Amazônia. Não obstante a grande demanda por essa fruta e a excelente cotação que atinge na Amazônia e nas demais áreas de ocorrência, o cultivo do bacuri- zeiro ainda é inexpressivo. Tal fato é devido às dificuldades de propagação e a longa fase jovem da planta. No início da década de 1940, Pesce (2009) já enfatizava que a planta não era cultivada, devido ao seu crescimento lento, conquanto, naquela época, os frutos eram muito procurados pelas peque- nas fábricas de doces, bastante comuns no Estado do Pará nessa época, e consumidos pela população local, ao natural e na forma de refresco, licor, doce em pasta e compota. -

Welcome to the Ornithological Congress of the Americas! Puerto Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina, from 8–11 August, 2017 Puerto Iguazú is located in the heart of the interior Atlantic Forest and is the portal to the Iguazú Falls, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area surrounding Puerto Iguazú, the province of Misiones and neighboring regions of Paraguay and Brazil offers many scenic attractions and natural areas such as Iguazú National Park, and provides unique opportunities for birdwatching. Over 500 species have been recorded, including many Atlantic Forest endemics like the Blue Manakin (Chiroxiphia caudata), the emblem of our congress. This is the first meeting collaboratively organized by the Association of Field Ornithologists, Sociedade Brasileira de Ornitologia and Aves Argentinas, and promises to be an outstanding professional experience for both students and researchers. Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. The three Guianas comprise, from west to east, the countries of Guyana (area: 83,000 square miles; capital: Georgetown), Surinam (area: 63, 037 square miles; capital: Paramaribo) and French Guiana (area: 34, 740 square miles; capital: Cayenne). Perhaps the earliest physical contact between Europeans and the present-day Guianas occurred in 1500 when the Spanish navigator Vincente Yanez Pinzon, after discovering the Amazon River, sailed northwest and entered the Oyapock River, which is now the eastern boundary of French Guiana. -

MONTALDO1 Summary: Nectar is the reward regularly offered by flowers to their pollinating birds. Studies on pollination by birds have focused on nectar as a reward while alternative reward systems have been poorly studied. Previous reviews have shown the presence of food tissues that serve as nutritive rewards to different classes of pollinators. However, in a recent revision of plant-bird interactions, the existence of a solid reward for birds has been disregarded. In South America at least three cases of this very particular bird-flower Interaction have been recently studied. In this paper we describe the syndrome features (flower morphology, reward properties, position of the pollination unit, flower color display and common visitors), that deviate from the typical ornithophilous syndrome, and its possible origin is discussed. El néctar es la recompensa típica que las flores ofrecen a las aves polinizadoras. Los estudios sobre ornitofilia se han concentrado en el néctar como recompensa, mientras que otras retribuciones alternativas fueron esca¬ samente analizadas. Revisiones previas han mostrado que la producción de tejidos alimenticios puede servir como recompensa para diferentes polinizadores, y al menos tres casos de esta particular interacción se estudiaron últimamente en América del Sur. Sin embargo, una revisión reciente sobre interacciones planta-ave descarta la presencia de recompensas sólidas. -

Accepted: 28 January, 2014 ABSTRACT We analyzed the pollen grains of 11 species within the subfamily Bombacoideae. The pollen grains were acetolyzed, after which they were analyzed and photographed under light microscopy. Unacetolyzed pollen grains were analyzed and photomicrographed under scanning electron microscopy. We studied pollen characters such as shape, size, exine ornamentation and aperture type. The species were separated by a pollen key, which considers the presence or absence of “calotte” in the pollen grains. This attribute separated Ceiba and Eriotheca from the other genera. Some species are differentiated by specific characters: in Bombacopsis glabra and B. stenopetala, the sexine is rugulate or “vermiculate” with isolated pilate elements; in B. calophylla, the pollen grains are sinu-aperturate; Ceiba speciosa show atypical, duplicolumellate sexine; C. erianthos is the only species with 5-colporate pollen grains and a pentagonal amb; in Pachira aquatica the reticulum has muri with spiculaspinulose muri (“reticulum cristate”). The variation in the pollen morphology confirms the eurypalynous status of the genera studied here. E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. The genus exhibits as extreme a diversity of floral form as is found anywhere in angiosperms and there are many unresolved taxonomic issues surrounding the genus.
