  • FACE to FACE Gallery News Issue No
FACE TO FACE Gallery News Issue no. 8 Spring 2004 Writing in this issue: Ali Smith, Fiona Shaw and Tom Phillips FROM THE DIRECTOR The spring is dominated by photographic portraiture, with the Cecil Beaton exhibition in the Wolfson Gallery and, alongside it from March, a counterpoint in the form of photographic postcards from the artist Tom Phillips’ remarkable collection. Featuring nearly one thousand anonymous portraits from the first half of the twentieth century, We Are The People is a fascinating slice through British life. As the images are now detached from the information as to whom the subject was, or the occasion on which the photograph was taken, they have a particular poignancy for us now, looking back to the early days of a world becoming modern. Interrupted Lives, the series of special Thursday evening talks examining the work of selected writers who died young, continues with Erica Wagner talking about Sylvia Plath on 25 March, Charles Nicoll on Kit Marlowe on 29 April and Ali Smith on Angela Carter on 27 May. Speculation about what would have happened if these writers had lived longer gives this series a new twist in examining biographies and portraits. The newly re-hung Early Twentieth Century Galleries, Rooms 30 and 31, have brought out a wealth of interesting sitters, and also include some new acquisitions (for instance Dame Wendy Hiller, Edwin Smith and Aleister Crowley) and some fascinating loans (for instance Lord Reith by Sir Oswald Birley and the Reverend Dick Sheppard by Sir Gerald Kelly). As always, I hope that the changing collection displays in St Martin’s Place provide continuing interest or intrigue for our members, patrons and supporters.

Maurice Farkoa Maurice Farkoa was born on 23 April 1864 at Smyrna, Turkey, the son of a French father and an English mother, his maternal grandfather being Sir Robert Wilkinson, the local English consul. After varied succes in his youth, including singing at private functions (at which he has always welcome throughout the remainder of his life). Farkoa was selected by George Edwardes to fulfil the part of Carbonnet in An Artist’s Model (Daly’s, London, 2 February 1895 ; transferred to the Lyric, London, 28 May 1895), during the run of which his songs included ‘Le Fou Rire’ (which he first recorded for Berliner in Washington DC in 1896, and again in London in 1898, 1899 and 1905 ; see below) and Leslie Stuart’s ‘Triby Will Be True’. The latter was written in the wake of the craze after the publication of George Du Maurier’s successful novel of that name. Farkoa reprised the part when An Artist’s Model was produced at the Broadway Theatre, New York, on 23 December 1895, following by a short tour. ‘London, February 9 (1895) - … Owen Hall’s new play, An Artist’s Model, was produced on Saturday night last at Daly’s theater. For this production, as already cabled, George Edwardes gathered together the strongest cast ever seen in a similar production, including Marie tempest, Lottie Venne, Lettie Lind, Leonara Braham, the original Patience of Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera of that name ; Marie Studholme, Hayden Coffin, William Blakeley, Eric Lewis and others and the prettiest and most celebrated choristers in London… ‘A capital succes was earned by Maurice Farkoa, a well known society entertainer, but a newcomer on the London stage, who is under a two years’ engagement to Mr Edwardes.

Go home or face arrest.’ These mobile billboards declared the number of arrests that had taken place ‘in your area’ in the previous week and provided a number to which people could text the message ‘HOME’ to initiate voluntary repatriation. In 2016, Theresa May, who had organised this scheme as home secretary, became prime minister, following the upheaval caused by the country’s plebiscite to leave the European Union. One of the main strands of argument of the successful ‘Brexit’ campaign centred on the ‘deep public anxiety … about uncontrolled immigration’2 and promised to reduce numbers of immigrants to the country.

  • 1 'Believe ME OR Not'
1 ‘Believe me or not’ Actresses, female performers, autobiography and the scripting of professional practice Maggie B. Gale Confessing the professional Borrowed for the title of my chapter, Believe Me or Not! was the first of two autobiographies written by the Gaiety Girl, stage and screen performer, writer and celebrity raconteur Ruby Miller (1889–1976). Published in 1933, after the early death of her husband, the pianist Max Darewski, the book takes the reader on a chronological journey through Miller’s career, from objectified ‘stage beauty’ to silent film star and society celebrity – with an uncanny onscreen resemblance to the film ‘vamp’ Pola Negri (Darewski [Miller], 1933: 178; Miller, 1962: 111–12). Miller’s intense autho- rial voice shifts in register between a woman concerned to assert her professional achievements and one still grieving for a love lost too soon. Her second autobiography, Champagne from My Slipper (Miller, 1962), repeats numerous anecdotes from the 1933 autobiography, but covers an additional thirty years of professional activity: it speaks to an altered market and an ageing, differently nuanced readership. Both autobiogra- phies articulate a professional presence in an industry transformed from one end of the century to another – by war, the emancipation of women, the development of the film industry and its impact on live theatre, by class conflict and shifts in the relationship between class and leisure, and by changed understandings of the social and cultural function of theatre. Miller challenges us to ‘believe her or not’ – and questions, up front, the precarious and fluid relationship between fact and fiction, through time and within the frame of autobiographical writing.
