An illustrated identification key to the 94 species is also provided, together with the information of specimens examined, and distribution of each species. Key words Key, Phlaeothripinae, fungus-feeder, China. 1 Introduction In the subfamily Phlaeothripinae, three groups, Haplothrips-lineage, Liothrips-lineage and Phlaeothrips-lineage, are recognized (Mound & Marullo, 1996). Among them, the first group was treated as the tribe Haplothripini subsequently by Mound and Minaei (2007) that includes all of the flower-living Phlaeothripinae; the second group, Liothrips-lineage was defined as the leaf-feeding Phlaeothripinae. Almost half of Thysanoptera species are fungivorous (Morse & Hoddle, 2006), in which about 1 500 species are from Phlaeothripinae (ThirpsWiki, 2014). In contrast to about 700 species of Idolothripinae ingesting fungal spores with broad maxillary stylets, fungivorous Phlaeothripinae are feeding on fungal hyphae (Mound & Palmer, 1983; Tree et al., 2010; Mound, 2004). All fungivorous Phlaeothripinae belong to the third group, Phlaeothrips-lineage, which is usually collected from dead branches, leaves, wood or leaf-litter. -

The list was compiled from museum collections, literature reviews, and records of recent introductions. More than 60 exotic species are from the Caribbean basin, with a few recently introduced species from the Oriental region. The lack of available North American faunal information concerning thrips is emphasized (this being derived from haphazard collecting and in only a few areas), as well as the lack of reliable literature for identifying native North American Thysanoptera. Breve definición del grupo y principales caracteres diagnósticos Los trips son insectos de muy pequeño tamaño, oscilando las especies ibéricas entre 0,3 y 14 mm de longitud. Tienen el cuerpo alargado, cilíndrico y de coloración variable entre el negro y el amarillo pálido, pasando por las distintas tonalidades del castaño. Los adultos pueden ser alados o ápteros. Las cuatro alas son alargadas, estrechas con largas sedas o cilios en los bordes, que aumentan su superficie cuando se encuentran en vuelo. En reposo se pliegan sobre el dorso del tórax y el abdomen. La cabeza muestra una clara asimetría de sus partes bucales, estando únicamente la mandíbula izquierda desarrollada y acabada en un cono. El aparato bucal es de tipo picador suctor, con importantes adaptaciones según el tipo de alimentación, pues hay especies fitófagas, carnívoras, ectoparásitas y micófagas. Los adultos poseen las uñas de los tarsos muy poco desarrolladas y están transformadas en unos escleritos que for- man una estructura a modo de ventosa denominada arolio que puede dilatarse hidrostáticamente, de forma que el insecto puede caminar sobre cualquier tipo de superficie. Las antenas están formadas por 6 a 9 artejos con órganos sensoriales diferenciados. Las hembras de los Terebrantia tienen un ovopositor falciforme que les permite incrustar los huevos en el tejido vegetal. -
