  • Remarks on Early Medieval Legal Charters —
1216-2574 / USD 20.00 ACTA JURIDICA HUNGARICA © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest 50, No 3, pp. 293–309 (2009) DOI: 10.1556/AJur.50.2009.3.4 TAMÁS NÓTÁRI Remarks on Early Medieval Legal Charters – The Legend of “dux Ingo” and his “carta sine litteris” Abstract. Enea Silvio Piccolomini in his work entitled De Europa written in 1458, tells an interesting story defined as a legend in terms of genre about a duke called Ingo, who lived during the reign of Charlemagne. This narrative claims that in 790 dux gentis Ingo held a feast for the inhabitants of his province where food was served to the peasants allowed to appear before him in golden and silver bowls, while to the dignitaries standing further away from him in bowls made of clay. The researchers’ attention is deservedly raised by the query how come that this parabolical story with biblical tone was included in Enea Silvio’s work; if it had been borrowed who the auctor might have been he borrowed it from. The answer seems to be very simple: from the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum drafted regarding the lawsuit proceeded against Methodius. In the case narrated in the Conversio Ingo sent a charter or much rather a parchment without any writing, or letters on it (carta sine litteris), which provided his legate with sufficient authenticity to demand obedience from the people. In this study–after having compared the two narratives and outlined the place of De Europa in Enea Silvio Piccolomini’s oeuvre and the circumstances of the drafting and tendencies of the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum–the author attempts to answer the following questions.

  • Pope Gregory X and the Crusades
1 POPE GREGORY X AND THE CRUSADES A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN THE SCHOOL OF HISTORY AT QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON BY PHILIP BRUCE BALDWIN UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF DR. THOMAS ASBRIDGE 2 FOR MY PARENTS 3 ABSTRACT This study examines the crusading movement during the reign of Pope Gregory X in the latter part of the thirteenth century, before the Latin presence in the Levant came to an end. It seeks to demonstrate the important position of this little-known pope, who formed the bridge between what can now be seen as two separate eras in the crusading period, namely, the era of the traditional passagium generale, and the ‘new’ era of the passagium particulare. To do this, it will study Western and Muslim sources to understand the condition of the Holy Land during Gregory’s pontificate to see the effect it had on the manner in which he organised his crusade, using both traditional and ‘new’ methods. By drawing on sources from crusading in Iberia, it will show that Gregory approached the crusade flexibly, and was not, as commonly described by historians, wholly obsessed with the Holy Land. It also seeks to dispel one of the more popular myths surrounding Gregory, which is that he wanted to change the government of the kingdom of Jerusalem by putting Charles of Anjou in charge there. A study of the Angevin chancery records – little used by crusade historians – will demonstrate that it was not Gregory’s idea, but rather Charles’ own. Finally, using Gregory’s papal registers and chronicle evidence, this study will attempt to imagine the crusade that would have occurred had Gregory not died prematurely.

MAXIMILIAN DIESENBERGER How Collections Shape the Texts: Rewriting and Rearranging Passions in Carolingian Bavaria The study of hagiography in Bavaria in the eighth and ninth centuries has focused pri marily upon the saints' vitae produced in that region. Among the most significant monuments are the two biographies by Arbeo of Freising (723-783), the Vita Corbini ani and the Vita Haimhrammi, as weIl as Virgil of Salzburg's Vita Hrodberti, the orig inal version of which is now lost1• For the ninth century, one might also mention the Translatio S. Hermetis, the metrical Vita s. Herasmi, and the Passio s. Quirini, which belongs perhaps to the tenth century2. The overall number of relevant hagiographie texts can be greatly expanded, however, if one takes into account the réécritures, or lat er revisions, of sorne of these texts from the late eighth and ninth centuries. One might also then eonsider the Vita II Haimhrammi and the Vita II Corbiniani3, and, above all, the hagiographie tradition belonging to St Rupert of Salzburg eontained in the Ges ta Hrodberti, as weIl as in the Notitia Arnonis, the Breves Notitiae and in the Conver sio BagoariOTum et Carantanorum4• Arbeo of Freising, Vita Corbiniani episcopi Baiuvariorum, ed.

1) Siehe Vasilij Melik, Slovenci v času Cankarjevega predavanja o jugoslovanstvu, in: Ders., Slovenci 1848–1918.

he 13th Salzburg Choral Festival, Jubilate Mozart!, will take place in Salzburg, Austria June 29 - July 3, 2022. The festival T will feature a large chorus consisting of mixed voice choirs from across North America. Three days of festival rehearsals, mingling side-by-side with singers from a variety of backgrounds, will lead festival participants to a grand finale concert in the historic and stunning Salzburger Dom. Under the direction of Dr. Eph Ehly, Professor Emeritus at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City, the festival chorus will perform out- standing classical works selected by Dr. Ehly. János Czifra, Domkapellmeister of the Dom, will conduct Mozart’s Mass in C Major, “Coronation,” KV 317, accompanied by the Salzburger Domorchester. Overseen by a nearly 1,000-year old hillside fortress, Salzburg is quaint, delicate, and utterly charming. This picturesque city within the heart of the Austrian coun- tryside rests along the northern boundary of the Alps, and literally resonates with the “Sound of Music." Salzburg's most famous historical resident is, by far, the 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. As a teenager, Mozart was employed as a court musician by the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. During this time, the composer worked in many genres, including symphonies, sonatas, string quartets, serenades, and a few minor operas. After a brief stay in Paris, Mo- zart returned to Salzburg in his early 20's to serve as court organist and concertmaster. In this position, he composed numerous works of sacred music for Salzburg, including his great Coronation Mass in C Major.
