Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi <57 WHENEVER SRI Bhagavan was asked about the problem of suffering, he suggested a method to eliminate it. Most others trim the branches; Sri Bhagavan tackled the root of the problem. He said that whatever be the gravity of the suffering, we are not aware of it in deep sleep. When we have a terrible tooth-ache, we can't think of anything except the pain. But the pain is not felt in deep sleep. In deep sleep, we are not conscious of the body and hence there is no pain. When the mind merges in the Self, there is no body-consciousness and therefore there is no pain. Sri Bhagavan says:"Physical pain only follows body- consciousness. It cannot be in the absence of body-conscidusness. Mind being unaware of the body, cannot be aware of its pains or pleasures. Pains are dependent on the ego; they cannot be without the ' I' but the ' I' can remain without them". Even ordinarily, we notice that our pain is related to the attitude of our mind. When we have some acute pain, and a person we like walks in our pain is relieved to some extent. SUFFERING EDITORIAL When a person we dislike walks in, our pain becomes worse. In other words, our pain increases or decreases according to the state of our mind at a particular moment. Sri Bhagavan asks us to remove the mind altogether so that we won't feel thepainatall. Hesays: "Thereforeturn inwards and seek the Self and there will be an end both of the world and its miseries". When body- consciousness goes, suffering goes. INTRODUCTION IT IS TO BE HOPED that the next ten years of Indological scholarship will demonstrate beyond dispute that Abhinavagupta, the great polymathic scholar and theologian of tenth-century Srīnagar, was one of the major figures in the history of Indian philosophy and religion, on par with such personages as Śaṅkara and Nāgārjuna. His importance as an expert in aesthetic philosophy and literary criticism has long been known to Sanskritists in both India and the West, and his contributions to the theories of rasa and dhvani continue to be studied. His stature as a theologian and metaphysical philosopher is just as great, though less recognized until recently. As the foremost among a number of skilled Kashmiri exegetes of various schools of the Śaiva religion, he did much to elevate Śaivism to a level of sophistication and comprehensive coherence unprecedented to that date, perhaps helping to ensure its continued patronage by royal courts and exegesis by learned scholars for centuries to come. Devotees subscribing to a variety of faiths have devised specific methods for paying obeisance to the Supreme Being. The vast mass of believers go on pilgrimage to holy places, offer prayers, read scriptures, perform prescribed rituals, carry out circumambulations, decorate holy places, make offerings as a token of faith, meditate and participate in mass prayers. Apart from the masses, there is a minuscule minority of genuine seekers of Truth for whom outward rituals are not of primary importance and who seek the presence of their Indwelling Divinity through inner means of concentration, contemplation and meditation. The inner practice of spirituality consists essentially of two components, namely (1) Jap or repeated chanting of some scriptural text, Divine name or Mantra and (2) Dhyan or meditation. Spiritual practices throughout the world have evolved around these two aspects of worship in some form or the other. Variants of Jap and Dhyan, find place in all spiritual traditions. In advanced stages of spiritual practice, there does not remain any necessity for either physical or conscious mental action.
