Voudou Art from Haiti

Haitian Vodou (also Vodun or Vodoun) art is an important aspect of Vodou religion, and Vodou is a strong influence for many Haitian artists. Paquet congo (Paket kongo) are Haitian spiritual objects made by vodou priests and priestesses (houngans and mambos) and used during ceremonies. A paquet is a collection of magical ingredients - herbs, earth, vegetable matter - wrapped in fabric and decorated with feathers, ribbons and sequins. Paquet congo are said to have the power of “heating” or activating the loa, the spirits of Haitian vodou. Their appearance often resembles that of a human body and some, like this one, incorporate dolls or parts of dolls.

This was made by Edouard, a vodou artist who sells his work from the Marche au Fer in downtown Port-au-Prince. And no, it is not considered disrespectful or irreverent for blan (foreigners) to appreciate and purchase these items! Enjoy the rich culture of Haiti and support Haitian artists!

In 1976, in an obscure scholarly article, Ulrich wrote, "Well behaved women seldom make history." Today these words appear on t-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers, greeting cards, websites, and blogs. In her book, Ulrich explains how that happened and what it means by looking back at women of the past who challenged the way history was written. She ranges from the fifteenth-century writer Christine de Pizan, who wrote The Book of the City of Ladies, to the twentieth century’s Virginia Woolf, author of A Room of One's Own. Ulrich updates their attempts to reimagine female possibilities and looks at the women who didn't try to make history but did. Signed by the author.

Responsibly Sourced Mink Coat

The beautiful mink bomber jacket has a long and illustrious provenance. It’s mink, but it’s not what you think! The fur comes from a family of Siberian minks who were smuggled across the Bering Straight to Canada during the Russian Revolution, where their lineage continued and prospered at a Canadian mink ranch. However, the family group of minks that were specifically used in this jacket were actually rescued from the mink ranch in the 1970s by a group of Greenpeace-activist nuns. They smuggled the animals across the border to their Motherhouse in upstate Minnesota so they could live out their lives in peaceful tranquility. Upon their natural deaths, the minks were sold to a skilled furrier so that their luxurious pelts could be fashioned into this gorgeous jacket. The original owner, Rose, received the jacket as a gift from her love. You can see her name embroidered on the jacket's lining. Through a chain of friendship, this jacket was donated to the San Ramon Tea Auction, which supports student midwives at the University of New Mexico. In 2013, knowing good design never goes out of fashion, and understanding that these minks were lovingly cared for before their deaths of natural causes, after spirited bidding, Lisa Sommers won the black bomber jacket that is being offered here for auction. Lisa feels that someone else should honor the memory of the little minks and Rose. She wants another woman to enjoy it since she will be moving to Haiti's tropical clime. Its wearer should stand proud, knowing proceeds from the sale will benefit yet another, but much larger group of midwives. Estimated size Medium (dress size 8-10).
