Paquet congo (Paket kongo) are Haitian spiritual objects made by vodou priests and priestesses (houngans and mambos) and used during ceremonies. A paquet is a collection of magical ingredients - herbs, earth, vegetable matter - wrapped in fabric and decorated with feathers, ribbons and sequins. Paquet congo are said to have the power of “heating” or activating the loa, the spirits of Haitian vodou. Their appearance often resembles that of a human body and some, like this one, incorporate dolls or parts of dolls. This was made by Edouard, a vodou artist who sells his work from the Marche au Fer in downtown Port-au-Prince. And no, it is not considered disrespectful or irreverent for blan (foreigners) to appreciate and purchase these items! Enjoy the rich culture of Haiti and support Haitian artists!
