Contemporar art movements such as conceptual art, performance art, and minimalism emphasized ideas, experience, and process over the tangile artwork; thus, related printed documents often provided the onl evidence of a work's existence. From the Lirar's vertical files, this selection of documents accompanied such ephemeral works and, among other functions, accessorized a performance piece, such as John Cage's Variations IV; invited participation in the art-making process itself, such as Alan Kaprow's happenings posters; and provided schema for the execution of a work, such as Dan Graham's Performance.

America Collects Eighteenth-Century French Painting National Galler of Art, Washington, Ma 21–August 20, 2017
As the founding fathers were drawing from French nlightenment philosoph, earl American collectors were developing a taste for 18th-centur French painting. ince then, Americans have enthusiasticall collected French painting from this period. Toda, splendid works artists such as François oucher, Joseph Ducreux, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard are in pulic collections across the countr—from major metropolises to Omaha, Muncie, and Jacksonville. For the first time, America Collects ighteenth-Centur French Painting will ring together nearl 70 of these paintings, well- known masterpieces and hidden gems alike, into an exhiition that tells the stor of the collectors, curators, museum directors, and dealers responsile for developing an American appetite for the French rococo and neoclassical stles. A full illustrated catalog on the development of this histor of taste will accompan the exhiition.

Matthias Mansen: Configurations National Galler of Art, Washington, Jul 23–Decemer 13, 2017
Matthias Mansen is a contemporar erlin-ased artist (. 1958) whose work advances the long tradition of woodlock printing. Mansen masterfull laers printings from multiple locks, sometimes emploing "ghost prints" to achieve delicate modulations of tonal intensit and texture. Concerned with process nearl as much as final product, Mansen works on numerous prints simultaneousl and progressivel carves and recarves his locks. His projects are est exhiited in an ensemle, which allows the grammar and rhthms of his repeated cognate arrangements and consonant forms to ecome tangile.

Fragonard: The Fantasy Figures National Galler of Art, Washington, Octoer 8–Decemer 3, 2017
The 2012 discover of a drawing Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) depicting his so-called fantas figures is the inspiration ehind a revelator exhiition of the corresponding paintings. Fragonard's drawing presents thumnail-sized sketches relating to 14 of his known paintings—rapidl executed, rightl colored portraits of lavishl costumed individuals, including the Galler's own Young Girl Reading (c. 1770). On loan from international pulic and private collections, Fragonard's fantas figures will e assemled alongside his original sketch for the first time. The exhiition, as well as its full illustrated accompaning catalog, presents scientific research into the msterious series and examines the 18th-centur Parisian world of new mone, unexpected social alliances, and extravagant fashions from which these unique paintings emerged.

ome 100 of the finest drawings Netherlandish artists orn efore 1585 are rought together in this exhiition from the collection of the Museum oijmans Van euningen. Featured are nearl ever form of drawing made draftsmen throughout the period, from figure studies to stained glass window designs, nature studies, ilical sujects, and genre scenes. The exhiition also gathers works in a variet of media including metalpoint, pen and ink, rush and wash, chalk, charcoal, and watercolor. Highlights include 15th-centur studies from the circle of Rogier van der Weden, two sheets Hieronmus osch, six drawings Pieter ruegel the lder, and a selection of works Araham loemaert. This landmark exhiition examines the artistic exchanges among Johannes Vermeer and his contemporaries from 1650 to 1675, when the reached the height of their technical ailit and master of depictions of domestic life. The exhiition rings together some 75 works Vermeer and his fellow painters of the Dutch Golden Age including Gerard ter orch, Gerrit Dou, Pieter de Hooch, Gariel Metsu, Frans van Mieris, Caspar Netscher, and Jan teen. juxtaposing paintings related theme, composition, and technique, the exhiition explores how these artists inspired, rivalled, surpassed, and pushed each other to greater artistic achievement. The paintings also reflect how these masters responded to the changing artistic climate of the Dutch Repulic in the third quarter of the 17th centur, particularl in Amsterdam, Delft, Leiden, and The Hague. The exhiition features ten paintings Vermeer (man of which have not een seen in the U since the Galler's legendar 1995–1996 exhiition, Johannes Vermeer), including The Lacemaker (c. 1669–1670, Musée du Louvre, Paris) and The Love Letter (c. 1669-70, Rijksmuseum). Anne Truitt (1921–2004), one of the most original and important sculptors of the postwar era, designed simple geometric constructions faricated in wood that she would paint in multiple laers to create astract compositions of sutle color in three dimensions. even sculptures, two paintings, and five drawings form the core of a small surve that will allow viewers to appreciate Truitt's classic work from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. An accompaning rochure will feature excerpts of an interview with Truitt James Meer.

The exhiition aligns work such diverse artists as Charles heeler, Christina Ramerg, and Matt Mullican with oth historic folk art and works self-taught artists ranging from Horace Pippin to Janet oel and Joseph Yoakum. It also examines a recent influx of radicall expressive work made on the margins that redefined the oundaries of the mainstream art world, while challenging the ver categories of "outsider" and "self-taught." Historicizing the shifting identit and role of this distinctl American version of modernism's "other," the exhiition proes assumptions aout creativit, artistic practice, and the role of the artist in contemporar culture. Michel Sittow: Estonian Painter at the Courts of Renaissance Europe National Galler of Art, Washington, Januar 28–Ma 13, 2018 Art Museum of stonia/Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn, June 8–eptemer 16, 2018
Undoutedl the greatest Renaissance artist from stonia, Michel ittow (c. 1469–1525) was orn in Reval (now Tallinn in present-da stonia), likel studied in ruges with Hans Memling, and worked at the courts of renowned uropean roals such as King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isaella of Castille. Through some 20 works, representing most of ittow's small oeuvre, the exhiition will offer an opportunit to examine his art in a roader context, including a possile collaoration with Juan de Flandes and ittow's relationship to his Netherlandish contemporaries. The exhiition will e presented oth museums to mark the occasion of the centennial of the stonian Repulic in 2018.

Heavenly Earth: Images of Saint Francis at La Verna National Galler of Art, Washington, Feruar 25–Jul 8, 2018
The Descrizione del acro Monte della Vernia (1612) depicts the monaster and dramatic rock terrain of La Verna, the site where aint Francis received the stigmata. The gifted aroque draftsman Jacopo Ligozzi was hired to illustrate the volume and he cleverl designed overslips pasted on 5 of the 22 engraved illustrations in a efore-and- after fashion to demonstrate the changes to the topograph since aint Francis's time. Drawing on the Galler's holdings of Franciscan imager, spanning the 15th through the 18th centuries, this exhiition places the Descrizione del acro Monte della Vernia within its most significant artistic and art historical context examining traditional representations of the experiences of aint Francis on the mountain of La Verna and innovations on traditional Franciscan suject matter characteristic of the Counter Reformation.

Gordon Parks: The New Tide, 1940-1950 National Galler of Art, Washington, Novemer 4, 2018–Feruar 18, 2019
During the 1940s American photographer Gordon Parks (1912-2006) grew from a self-taught photographer making portraits and documenting everda life in aint Paul and Chicago to a visionar professional shooting for on, Vogue, Fortune, and Life. For the first time, the formative decades of Parks’s 60-ear career are the focus of an exhiition, which rings together 120 photographs and ephemera—including magazines, ooks, letters, and famil pictures. The exhiition will illustrate how Parks’s earl experiences at the Farm ecurit Administration, Office of War Information, and tandard Oil (New Jerse) as well as his close relationships with Ro trker, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, and Ralph llison, helped shape his groundreaking stle. Despite his contriutions to the irth of impressionism, Frédéric azille (1841-1870) remains relativel unknown. A thematic presentation of 75 works— including paintings contemporaries such as Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir—will ring to light azille’s place as a central figure in the movement. everal examples from the Galler’s collection, which houses the largest group of azille’s works outside of France, will e featured in the first major American exhiition on the artist in almost 25 ears. Paintings his predecessors, Gustave Couret and Théodore Rousseau, compared with those of azille, explore the sources and influences on his limited ut visionar oeuvre.

The Woodner Collections: Master Drawings from Seven Centuries National Galler of Art, Washington, March 12–Jul 16, 2017
ome 100 drawings dating from the 14th to the 20th centur are presented in an exhiition of masterworks donated one of the great connoisseurs of the 20th centur, Ian Woodner, and his daughters, Dian and Andrea. The Woodner Collections includes drawings executed outstanding draftsmen such as Leonardo da Vinci, Alrecht Dürer, Raphael, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, dgar Degas, and Palo Picasso, among man others.

Along with Civil War images, pictures of the American West have long dominated the canon of 19th-centur American landscape photograph, ut scant attention has een given to man of the photographers working in the eastern half of the United tates. ast of the Mississippi is the first exhiition to focus exclusivel on this rich chapter of America’s photographic histor. 175 works—including daguerreotpes, salted paper prints, alumen prints, stereo cards, and alums—show landscapes ranging from dramatic views of Niagara Falls and picturesque scenes in the White Mountains to devastated Civil War attlefields and the construction of the Atlantic & Great Western Railwa. Over the past decade, American artist Theaster Gates (. 1973) has explored the uilt environment and the power of art and culture to transform experience. For the second exhiition in the reopened ast uilding Tower 3 galleries, Gates will present a new od of work—The Minor Arts— featuring several pieces created for the Galler. The installation will examine how discarded and ordinar ojects, including the floor of a Chicago high school gm and the archives of on magazine, acquire value through the stories we tell.

The Urban Scene: 1920–1950 National Galler of Art, Washington, Feruar 26–August 6, 2017
American artists of the earl 20th centur sought to interpret the eaut, power, and anxiet of the modern age in diverse was. Through depictions of ustling cit crowds and reathtaking metropolitan vistas, 25 lack-and-white prints in this exhiition explore the spectacle of uran modernit. Prints recognized artists such as Louis Lozowick and Reginald Marsh, as well as lesser-known artists including Mael Dwight, Gerald Geerlings, Victoria Hutson Huntle, Martin Lewis, and tow Wengenroth, are included in this exhiition.

Della Robbia: Sculpting with Color in Renaissance Florence Museum of Fine Arts, oston, August 9–Decemer 4, 2016 National Galler of Art, Washington, Feruar 5–June 4, 2017
Luca della Roia (1400-1483), a master sculptor in marle and ronze, invented a glazing technique for terracotta sculpture that positioned him as one of the most innovative artists of the 15th-centur. Toda, the sculptures created Luca and his famil workshop retain their rilliant opaque whites, deep cerulean lues, and otanical greens, purples and ellows over modeling that makes them powerful, expressive examples of Italian Renaissance art. Resistant to weather and easil readale at a distance, Della Roia works were widel collected in the late 19th and earl 20th-centur Americans traveling to Ital who sought to ring a piece of Renaissance Florence home. Della Roia: culpting with Color in Renaissance Florence will present some 40 works Luca, his nephew Andrea (1435-1525), Andrea's sons, and the competing uglioni workshop, drawn chiefl from American collections ut also including major loans from Ital. Various sculptural tpes—Madonna and Child reliefs, portraits, architectural decorations, household statuettes and active full-scale figures—will illustrate the range and emotional appeal of Della Roia glazed ceramics. Technical analsis and conservation conducted at the Museum of Fine Arts, oston, the rookln Museum, the National Galler of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art will provide new insight into how these groundreaking works were made. A richl illustrated ook, the first nglish-language overview of three generations of Della Roia sculpture, will accompan the exhiition.

Civic Pride: Group Portraits from Amsterdam National Galler of Art, Washington, March 10, 2012–August 2017
The Dutch Golden Age ielded a unique stle of portraiture, which shows leaders of militar and civic organizations as though the had gathered together for a meal or a meeting, there emphasizing their personal interactions and shared responsiilities. Painted in 1642 and 1655, two large-scale group portraits Govert Flinck (1615–1660) and artholomeus van der Helst (1613–1670) depict different sets of governors of the Kloveniersdoelen, the headquarters of one of Amsterdam's main militia companies.

Masterpieces of American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection, 1700–1830 National Galler of Art, Washington, Octoer 7, 2012–ongoing
One of the largest and most refined collections of earl American furniture in private hands―acquired over the course of four decades George M. and Linda H. Kaufman―was promised to the National Galler of Art in Octoer 2010. This permanent installation on the Ground Floor of the West uilding highlights nearl 100 examples of the Kaufmans' earl American furniture and decorative arts, presented with a selection of porcelains as well as watercolors Pierre Joseph Redouté also from the Kaufman Collection. National Galler paintings such celerated American artists as Gilert tuart are integrated into the displa. The Kaufman gift dramaticall transforms the Galler's collection, augmenting its fine holdings of uropean decorative arts with equall important American works of art, and it is the first major displa of earl American decorative arts on continual pulic view in the nation's capital.

The National Galler of Art and its culpture Garden are at all times free to the pulic. The are located on the National Mall etween 3rd and 9th treets at Constitution Avenue NW, and are open Monda through aturda from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and unda from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Galler is closed on Decemer 25 and Januar 1. Visitors will e asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering. Checkrooms are free of charge and located at each entrance. Luggage and other oversized ags must e presented at the 4th treet entrances to the ast or West uilding to permit x-ra screening and must e deposited in the checkrooms at those entrances. For the safet of visitors and the works of art, nothing ma e carried into the Galler on a visitor's ack. An ag or other items that cannot e carried reasonal and safel in some other manner must e left in the checkrooms. Items larger than 17 26 inches cannot e accepted the Galler or its checkrooms.
