From the Lirar's vertical files, this selection of documents accompanied such ephemeral works and, among other functions, accessorized a performance piece, such as John Cage's Variations IV; invited participation in the art-making process itself, such as Alan Kaprow's happenings posters; and provided schema for the execution of a work, such as Dan Graham's Performance. Toda, splendid works artists such as François oucher, Joseph Ducreux, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard are in pulic collections across the countr—from major metropolises to Omaha, Muncie, and Jacksonville. For the first time, America Collects ighteenth-Centur French Painting will ring together nearl 70 of these paintings, well- known masterpieces and hidden gems alike, into an exhiition that tells the stor of the collectors, curators, museum directors, and dealers responsile for developing an American appetite for the French rococo and neoclassical stles. A full illustrated catalog on the development of this histor of taste will accompan the exhiition. Mansen masterfull laers printings from multiple locks, sometimes emploing "ghost prints" to achieve delicate modulations of tonal intensit and texture. Concerned with process nearl as much as final product, Mansen works on numerous prints simultaneousl and progressivel carves and recarves his locks. His projects are est exhiited in an ensemle, which allows the grammar and rhthms of his repeated cognate arrangements and consonant forms to ecome tangile. The installation is curated John A. Fragonard's drawing presents thumnail-sized sketches relating to 14 of his known paintings—rapidl executed, rightl colored portraits of lavishl costumed individuals, including the Galler's own Young Girl Reading (c. 1770). On loan from international pulic and private collections, Fragonard's fantas figures will e assemled alongside his original sketch for the first time. The exhiition, as well as its full illustrated accompaning catalog, presents scientific research into the msterious series and examines the 18th-centur Parisian world of new mone, unexpected social alliances, and extravagant fashions from which these unique paintings emerged. The exhiition rings together some 75 works Vermeer and his fellow painters of the Dutch Golden Age including Gerard ter orch, Gerrit Dou, Pieter de Hooch, Gariel Metsu, Frans van Mieris, Caspar Netscher, and Jan teen. juxtaposing paintings related theme, composition, and technique, the exhiition explores how these artists inspired, rivalled, surpassed, and pushed each other to greater artistic achievement. An accompaning rochure will feature excerpts of an interview with Truitt James Meer.
