In this connection, not only robotic manipulators are of great use but also free-flying inspector satellites supporting the oper- ations through additional feedback to the ground operator. The manual control of such an inspector satellite at a remote location is challenging since the navigation in three- dimensional space is unfamiliar and large time delays can occur in the communication chan- nel. This paper shows a series of robotic experiments, in which satellites are controlled by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Synchronized Position Hold Engage Reorient Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) were utilized to study several aspects of a remotely controlled inspector satellite. The focus in this case study is to investigate different approaches to human-spacecraft interaction with varying levels of autonomy under zero-gravity conditions. 1 Introduction Human-machine interaction is a wide spread research topic on Earth since there are many terrestrial applica- tions, such as industrial assembly or rescue robots. Building and Maintaining the International Space Station (ISS)
/ Building and maintaining the International Space Station (ISS) is a very complex task. An international fleet of space vehicles launches ISS components; rotates crews; provides logistical support; and replenishes propellant, items for science experi- ments, and other necessary supplies and equipment. The Space Shuttle must be used to deliver most ISS modules and major components. All of these important deliveries sustain a constant supply line that is crucial to the development and maintenance of the International Space Station. The fleet is also responsible for returning experiment results to Earth and for removing trash and waste from the ISS. Currently, transport vehicles are launched from two sites on transportation logistics Earth. In the future, the number of launch sites will increase to four or more. Future plans also include new commercial trans- ports that will take over the role of U.S. ISS logistical support. The New American Space Age: A Progress Report on Human Spaceflight Lately, it seems the public cannot get enough of space! The recent hit movie “Gravity” not only won 7 Academy Awards – it was a runaway box office success, no doubt inspiring young future scientists, engineers and mathematicians just as “2001: A Space Odyssey” did more than 40 years ago. “Cosmos,” a PBS series on the origins of the universe from the 1980s, has been updated to include the latest discoveries – and funded by a major television network in primetime. And let’s not forget the terrific online videos of science experiments from former International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield that were viewed by millions of people online. Clearly, the American public is eager to carry the torch of space exploration again. Thankfully, NASA and the space industry are building a host of new vehicles that will do just that. American industry is hard at work developing new commercial transportation services to suborbital altitudes and even low Earth orbit. NASA and the space industry are also building vehicles to take astronauts beyond low Earth orbit for the first time since the Apollo program. Meanwhile, in the U.S. National Lab on the space station, unprecedented research in zero-g is paving the way for Earth breakthroughs in genetics, gerontology, new vaccines and much more. -
Strategy for Human Spaceflight In
Developing the sustainable foundations for returning Americans to the Moon and enabling a new era of commercial spaceflight in low Earth orbit (LEO) are the linchpins of our national human spaceflight policy. As we work to return Americans to the Moon, we plan to do so in partnership with other nations. We will therefore coordinate our lunar exploration strategy with our ISS partners while maintaining and expanding our partnerships in LEO. As we work to create a new set of commercial human spaceflight capabilities, we will enable U.S. commercial enterprises to develop and operate under principles of long-term sustainability for space activity and recognize that their success cannot depend on Federal funding and programs alone. The National Space Council recognized the need for such a national strategy for human spaceflight in LEO and economic growth in space, and in February of 2018, called on NASA, the Department of State, and the Department of Commerce to work together to develop one. This strategy follows the direction established by the Administration through Space Policy Directives 1, 2, and 3, which created an innovative new framework for American leadership by reinvigorating America’s human exploration of the Moon and Mars; streamlining regulations on the commercial use of space; and establishing the first national policy for space traffic management. Our strategy for the future of human spaceflight in LEO and for economic growth in space will operate within the context of these directives. Through interagency dialogue, and in coordination with the Executive Office of the President, we have further defined our overarching goals for human spaceflight in LEO as follows: 1. -

Johnson Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology Robotic spacecraft that land on and rove over the surface of Mars must be designed to overcome many challenges due to the hostile and uncertain environment. Winds and dust buffet landers as they descend rapidly to the surface. Rocks, scarps, dunes and slopes must be avoided during landing and rover traverse. Temperature extremes, radiation, shock and vibration stress mechanical designs and computing must recover gracefully from hardware and software failures. The round-trip light time precludes direct tele-operation so all vehicle motion is executed autonomously on-board given high level commands from earth. Autonomous robotic systems are increasingly used to mitigate these challenges while also extending the capabilities of the spacecraft. The objective of robotic Mars missions is to advance scientific discovery. Science return is greater when there is geological diversity and stratigraphy near the landing site, but these create terrain that is risky for landing. To mitigate these risks autonomous robotic systems are being developed for safe landing in these hazardous terrains. Algorithms have been developed that estimate the pose of the lander relative to known landmarks and automatically detect and avoid landing hazards. These algorithms are being combined with sensors and high performance computing to create bolt-on systems for safe and pin-point landing. Landing is fully autonomous and failure is not recoverable, so these systems are designed to be self- checking and as simple as possible while also dealing with environmental factors like illumination variations, dust and terrain relief.
