NIRB Application for Screening #125038 Canada C3 led by the Students on Ice Foundation Application Type: New Project Type: Tourism Application Date: 1/4/2017 1:20:12 PM Period of Operation: From 2017-06-01 to 2017-09-06 Proposed Authorization: From 2017-07-27 to 2017-09-06 Project proponent: Students on Ice, Geoff Green Students on Ice, Geoff Green 1740 Chemin Pink Rd Gatineau Quebec J9J 3N7 Canada Tel: 819-827-3300, fax: DETAILS Non-technical project proposal description English: The Canada C3 project is an epic journey to celebrate Canada and connect Canadians. Canada C3 is a signature initiative for Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation in 2017. The centrepiece is an epic 150-day sailing journey from Toronto to Victoria via the Northwest Passage. Canada C3 will be in Nunavut between approximately July 29, 2017 and approximately September 5, 2017. Canada C3 will connect Canadians from coast to coast to coast and inspire a deeper understanding of our land, our peoples, and the past, present and future of our country. The 150-day ship-based expedition is divided into 15 legs, each leg will be approximately 10 days long. A total of 60 personnel will be on board the ship consisting of approximately 20 crew who will never leave the ship, approximately 25 participants and approximately 15 Canada C3 staff. The participants will represent a cross-section of Canadian society such as scientists, artists, Indigenous Elders, historians, business leaders, youth, newcomers, journalists, celebrities, and teachers who will tell their stories, share their experiences, conduct research, create art and music, and together celebrate Canada. The expedition will take place on board our expedition vessel, the M/V Polar Prince. All accommodations and meals for staff and passengers will take place onboard the vessel. At no point will any of our personnel be overnighting on land. Proposed Activities The proposed activities for Canada C3 will be determined based on the ongoing consultation with communities to create a program that allows them to demonstrate the uniqueness and diversity of their home to all Canadians. Canada C3 will participate in a wide variety of activities throughout the journey including community engagements, school visits, zodiac cruises and sharing Canada’s natural beauty. Canada C3 activities will engage with our four key themes of Diversity and Inclusion, Reconciliation, Youth Engagement and the Environment. Key examples of our activities includes reconciliation at the Moravian Mission in Hebron, learning about youth engagement in Iqaluit, showcasing Inuit arts and culture in Cambridge Bay and viewing wildlife in Ninginganiq National Wildlife Area. Canada C3 will sail past The Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary on August 29th, the anniversary of the signing of the Migratory Birds Act and we will showcase and celebrate CWS’s important work. Shore landings and Zodiac cruises will last at most 2 hours and landings will last on average 4 hours. A maximum of 6 Zodiacs will be used with 15 passengers each. Expedition activities at historic sites and/or sites of archaeological/palaeontological significance, or protected areas will not involve any research. This is a ship-based expedition where all personnel will eat and sleep on board the ship, there will be no overnights on land. Participants will likely encounter whales, seals, polar bears, caribou, seabirds, walruses and more, but will not approach or interact with wildlife. Participants will be visiting national wildlife areas and other protected areas for observation and educational purposes. No plant or animal species will be disturbed, and no specimens will be removed from the sites. Prior to site visits, expedition staff will give a briefing to all participants on biological aspects as well as the guidelines required to insure utmost respect and care for these sites. On-site interpretation and monitoring will take place during each visit by expedition staff. Moreover, when in Auyuittuq National Park, we will have local Parks Canada staff as guides and bear monitors. Education and Knowledge Program Canada C3 has an integrated science component to provide Canadian science and traditional ecological knowledge experts access to a unique platform to conduct research and to showcase and highlight their work. All researchers doing fieldwork will be experts in their field and will obtain their own permits relevant to the type of research they will conduct. We will invite members of the communities we plan to visit to participate in the voyage. The engagement of different age classes will be instrumental in facilitating the exchange of knowledge and perspectives between generations. Traditional and local knowledge will be integrated within the science program to enhance the understanding of the research, while promoting the interaction and exchange of knowledge between western scientists and traditional knowledge holders. The Canada C3 legacy initiatives will include a feature documentary, an online art exhibit, a natural history collection, curriculum-linked learning modules, a Canada C3 book, and a playlist of music composed by participating Canadian musicians. Canada C3 aspires to connect Canadians and to deepen our understanding of each other and Canada as a country with three vibrant coastlines rich in culture, French: A French version of the non-techncal project proposal description will be made available upon request.
