SAINTS STATISTICAL SUMMARY for 2013 / 2014

The following information details St. Brigids / St. Louis Cricket Club records that have been equalled or bettered, and also details Cricketing Milestone Highlights achieved by Saint Members, during the 2013 / 2014 cricket season.

The information for this summary, and for the Trophy Award winners, is gleaned from the club team Score Books. Match Day Scoring needs to be an accurate account of the day’s play as ultimately, the score book will decide the result of a game, not Results Vault. So please undertake scoring responsibly and complete all details including catches. Accurate score books make for accurate match day results . The lack of information and accuracy in THIS year’s Senior Score Books was the worst presented at the season’s end, except the 1 st XI score book, which was as usual a pleasure to read and glean, thanks to Lurker. On-field success starts from successful off-field endeavours.

President’s Report

This year was another great season for all at St Brigid’s/St Louis Cricket club. We had more cricketers playing for the club than last season, more sponsors on board, more wins in both juniors and seniors and more helpers contributing to a successful 13/14. New training nets and a brand new kitchen for the Cave were two new major additions in the growth of the club this year. Well done to everyone who participated and contributed to the best cricket club in the area.

The committee had a number of agendas this year with the main one was to strengthen the players and resources for the first XI following a disappointing 2012/13 season. In the off season the committee was talking to a non playing coach for the club, but unfortunately it did not eventuate. This year the Saints fielded 4 senior sides with the season starting with great excitement and expectation around the club with 3 new recruits for the year. Sam Parr and Joe Smith from Stoke, England and Kyle Gray back from St Kilda district cricket Club. Adding to this Jerry Heys was appointed captain of the 1XI for the first time and with a number of juniors coming through the ranks available and more importantly wanting to play in the ones. Yes we had a successful year on field in our first 1XI but we need to take that extra step next season in playing finals in turf 2 of the DDCA. Next season the committee is looking at improving the Bondi Rd turf wicket with money and resources to ensure our pitch is the best in the local area.

Again the club would not have ran so smoothly but for the following people who volunteered their time this year. I would like to personally thank - Noel Brodie (secretary) another great effort this year both on and off the field, Bob Hower (treasurer) first year who did a great job keeping the finances/money in place and his assistant Geoff Kilner who just keeps on keeping on. No job too big for this man. Geoff was the driving force behind the new kitchen and the new cricket nets as well as many other tasks around the club and was recognized with Geoff winning the John Donagan Award (best club man) again! Justin Balsillie, Bill Sheldon, Adam Murphy and John Fuller were again on the committee and continuing to do what was required to make the cricket club run. Fiona Smith our Grant Manager was again successful with a number of grants from local councils, Vic Health to the state government grants. Mia and Shawn Craig responded to my email asking for accommodation for our two overseas cricketers Sam and Joe. Thank you Mia for your generous support in assisting these two cricketers for 4-5 months. To Ian Baxter, again thank you for your continued duties/communication with the life members of the club. Your efforts don’t go un-noticed.

Sponsors contributed the second biggest source of income for the club. E-view Chelsea (Noel Susay) was again very generous with a sponsorship and also donating cricket equipment for raffles . Buyers Choice(Peter Flash Hope) was again on board as he has done for the last 10 years. Not only is Peter a sponsor of the club this year he was presented with his Life Membership of the club on presentation night. Kingsley Anthonisz from Lifecare Chiropractic in Mentone was again a bronze sponsor the club. South Beach Handyman Services (Mat Worsnop),Tweed Ultimate Apartments/Tweed Heads NSW (George Berg)and Dominance Security(Nick) were again on board. Urban Renewables (Adrian Bug Cole) and Laurie Reeves from Controlworks were new sponsors for the club this year. As I have mentioned to you all before, the club needs to support the people who support the club! So if you are looking for a house? need finance? Need a holiday? handyman work around your house, solar panels to save the environment, employment placement, and finally an adjustment from the chiro , our sponsors are for you! All details are on our web site.

Our juniors numbers have increase from 7 to 8 sides this season due to our parents. The committee and all our junior coaches are aware of the clubs policy on our juniors that “every child gets an opportunity to bat and bowl each week”. We fielded an under 16a managed by Pat Jamieson, under 14a Blair Hutchinson, under 14b Geoff Kilner, under 12a managed by John Fuller who also was our junior co-ordinated (again)and under 12bBlue Rod Love-Linay, under 12bGold Eddie Vella , Rookies were coached by Matthew Skeggs and Laurie Reeve ran the t/20 Blast and Milo Cricket for the year. Thank you to all our junior coaches and assistants on game day. You are the reason why our juniors are so strong and are the future of our club and the reason why our numbers increase every year.

Socially this year was again underpinned by our Back to the Cave nights which saw seniors ,juniors and junior parents, sponsors and supporters come together to celebrate cricket at St Brigid’s/St Louis with giveaways for the kids and awards for all. The $1000 Draw just gets bigger and was again a profitable Sunday afternoon for the club. Rock Day was played in a 40 degree Sunday with the Legends winning the match after declaring innings closed in a one day game. Rossdale GC hosted the annual Cave Golf day.

Our on field success was very pleasing for the club and the committee. Our first XI was very competitive and in the top four going into the last round of the season, the 2 nd XI had 5 wins and 5 losses for the year, a big improvement for last year, the 3rds finished off the season on a high with a great 2014 and the fourths just missed out on making the finals again coming down to the last round. Our juniors were entered into a new competition South East Cricket Association (SECA) and the boys were very competitive and will even be more competitive next season once we get the grading correct. It was also pleasing to see a number of our juniors playing in the seniors this year which is the future of the Saints.

New innovations for the club this year was the Players Pledge which a document which was signed by club members pledging their respect for all. On the merchandise side we introduced the Saints blue and yellow cricket jackets and the E-View white shirts to add to the number of saints products available for our members. 2013/14 Cave awards were again given out this year for an outstanding efforts on field and given out each week. Mark “Junior” Jamieson put his hand up this year (without any influence from anyone) and took over the top job of bar manager. Thanks Mark, big effort. Bob Hower took over the Cave newsletter publication and was a hit from his first edition. Very entertaining Bob, great work.

In conclusion, as president for the third year I feel the club still offers a safe, enjoyable environment for people to come to the Saints and play cricket regardless of age, size or ability. Next season I would like to see some new faces on the committee with, maybe a social secretary to co-ordinate the likes of a Cave Ball. I continue to enjoy my time as President and am looking to continue next season and would then like to hand the reigns over to another cave member for a new fresh start with new fresh ideas for season 2015/16.

President - Noel Smacka Fitzgibbon

11 29-Aug-14 Secretary’s Report 2013/14

This year through government changes saw the club forced adopt a standard rules model (rules of association), these rules basically replaced our constitution. This was a massive undertaking and I would like to acknowledge the effort that Bill Sheldon put in to navigating the club through this task.

This year the committee decided to revive a previous award for the Club Champion (best first elevens player). The committee decided to name the award the ‘Ian Baxter ’award. I cannot think of a more appropriate person to name this award after. Our Captain Jeremy Heys, was the worthy recipient of this award.

Our club truly embraces the participation aspect of all our juniors getting a fair go, I have to say not many other clubs follow our lead, and we are continually dismayed by the behaviour of these clubs. Another positive flow on effort of our fair go policy is that all our young players are truly team orientated and exhibit fine on field behaviours.

Our juniors continue to shine in the senior competition as we once again we had a fairly large representation of junior players in our senior teams. Nearly all of our 1 st eleven players were Cave juniors.

Our off field behaviour was fantastic and this underpinned our on field performances we improved and the club enjoyed more wins than losses this season. Once again we were unable to grab any premierships this year, but I have a feeling we aren’t far off some silverware.

John Fuller stepped into the captain’s role for the 4 th eleven this on the back of all his commitments to the junior club.

The Junior Club continues to grow with them fielding 3 under 12 teams, and under 14 and under 16 team. Back to the Cave continues to be a big hit and is very well supported buy all the parents

Thank You All the committee, coaches and captains of our club. Our Sponsors, we proudly wear your logos on our chest. Fiona Smith, grants help us to survive Our Mums and Dads, Brothers and Sisters who make up this wonderful fabric Our President Noel Fitzgibbon. ‘The Kiln’ the most amazing clubman I have ever met Mark Jamieson ran the Bar this year and he did a great job in looking after it. He was able to maintain a great level of service and profitability for the club.

See you next year, Noel Brodie

SAINTS LIFE MEMBERS ASSOCIATION (Founded 1986)

LEGENDS REPORT for 2013/2014

As always, the Saints Life Members Association (Legends) has been actively involved in the social, playing and administration of the club. The Legends organise a few social events throughout the season and here is a brief account of those activities:

New Life Members

This season, there was one new Life Member inducted by the club, and his name is Peter (Flash) Hope. Peter achieved and earned his life membership by being an active contributor both on and off the field for the club. Peter basically joined our club just after it transferred to the DDCA, which Peter knew a lot about, as he had previously played for Cranbourne in the DDCA years before. Peter is a Senior Premiership Player for the club in 03/04 when the 4 th XI secured the chocolates against St Marys. Peter has been a Club Committee Member for a number of years and held the reins of Club Treasurer for 3 consecutive years. Peter is a very passionate and proud club member, and also over the years, his Company has been valued Club Sponsor. With all his efforts both on and off the field, Peter is a very deserving recipient of the prestige honour of the Club Life Membership.

SLMA Junior Cricketer Award

The SLMA Award to the Cave Junior Cricketer, who achieves the most success in the senior ranks for the Saints, was awarded this season to Will Balsillie. After a slow start to the season due to quick growth spurts creating extra stress on his back, Will had to be nursed early in the season. As he gained confidence in body, Will was a major contributor in the improvement of the 2 nd XI with his accurate bowling. An excellent effort Will on your cricket season with both the Juniors and the Seniors of the club, considering your early health set back, you have remained positive. Next season will only be better again for Will. Top effort.

Thursday Night Raffles

The Thursday Night Raffle tradition continued at the Cave, NOT. Due to a lack of members turning up to training, then to the club rooms after Thursday Night training, the Traditional Cave Raffle was not run this year. This is probably a litmus test on the current position of the club.

Rock Day - 1st Sunday in February of each Year

A good turn-up by members for both sides this year. The Legends were led by Granto, while Sam Parr, all the way from England and on loan to the Saints, held the reins for the All-Stars. The legends were away with the Doc Burke and Jezza cranking things up, well at least Jezza. Today, the legends were all contributing with the willow which is unusual for a Saints team, with Murph, Granto, Deano, Marsi, Ferret, “The Man”, Blinky, and Bug contributing, while Pilz and JBalls holding their ends up, so to speak. The Legends score of 222 appeared competitive, and the fielding in the heat could take effect on the All-Stars in their quest for runs.

The All-Stars also were getting good contributors with the willow, but their time in the heat in fielding was affecting their scoring rate and at the end of their innings, the score was 142, with the Legends getting the chocolates this year . A fun, and unusually hot day which KO’d the , and again thanks to the Man for being Master Chef with the BBQ, and Paul, Stealth and Geoff assisting the club in organising the refreshments.

Excellent Friday

Round 5 V Parkdale at Bondi

Us 115 (61 overs) A McGuire 33, K Love-Linay 13no

And

4/45 (18 overs)

Them 8/128 (63 0vers) P Jamieson 4/37, S Jamieson 2/18

We welcomed Ryan Stringer for his first game in the firsts. Angus batting down the list hit some runs, Kye batted well and could not be knocked over.

P Jamieson bowling pace was the pick of the bowlers. Just needed a few more runs

Them 206 (73 overs) S Jamieson 4/43, A McGuire 2/35, P Jamieson 2/69

Us all out for 136 (38 overs) L Harris 56

Them 126 (45 overs) A Cole 3/27, P Jamieson 2/22, S Jamieson 2/26, A McGuire 2/34

And

4/128 (27 overs)

Jerry calves them up, may have been ripped off falling just short of 150. Liam continues his excellent form. We tried for the outright and we had them in trouble early. They closed up shop in the second innings

Round 10 V Doveton away

Them 126 (56 overs) A McGuire 8/43, P Jamieson 1/35 R Williams 1/6

And 1/77 (22 overs) M Jamieson 1/8

Us 6/228 (58 overs) L Harris 55, J Heys 54no, M Jamieson 44, R Stringer 26

In 40 degrees Gus turns up the heat, 18.2 overs 8 for, what an amazing performance

Chasing 126, 67 partnership between Stealth and String for the first wicket sees us off to a great start. Our Batsmen get some great batting practise. Heys and Harris must be seeing it like a basketball. We put them back in to bat in attempt to take 10 points. Stealth’s pies snag the only wicket and when this happens it is time to call it a day.

Round 11 V Southern Pirates Bondi

Us 140 (47 overs) M Jamieson 46, J Heys 47, S Jamieson

Them 3/176 (86 overs) A McGuire 3/60

Going in to the last round we are in the top 4, but this game sees 2nd vs 3rd and the loser will drop out. We are in trouble early losing 3 wickets. The skipper and Stealth hold on valiantly and take us to 86 when Stealth falls. We bat for 47 overs and have them 3 down over night. The Game is very much in the balance. Their 4 th wicket partnership holds and this see them over the line.

33 / 61 SECOND XI –Season Report 2013/14 I took the reigns as captain this year with the view to blood young cricketers to 1- Introduce them to turf cricket 2- Have them prepared/ready for the next step in playing in our one’s and 3- Play to win and enjoy the great game of cricket.

Round 1 v Hallam , away – washout

Round 2 v Doveton Nth , home - WIN Won the toss and decided to bat. Nothing new there! We bat the 80 overs and make a competitive score of 9/218 –Blair Hutchinson 51, Bobby Hower 41, Smacka 33 and Tyler Brodie 21. We bowl them out for 42 off 28 overs. Paul Matthews 3/8, Bobby 3/28 and Adrian Bug Cole 2/3 . We bowl again but the old blokes run out of puff! Them 7/87 with Rod and Kai Love-Linay 2 each

Round 3 v Springvale , home –WIN . Win the toss again and again bat and again bat the 80 overs and make 9/242. Ryan Stringer 68, Smacka 42, Tyler and Noel Brodie both 28! Them all out 106 with Riley Sheldon 3/11 Will Balsillie 2/16 and Rod 2/22. We go again with 36 overs to go, but again just fail to dismiss them for maximum points. Will and Rod 2 each.

Round 4 v Dingley , away – WIN Looking for max points so we win the toss and send them in! Two quick wickets early but they consolidate and play the entire day for 170 runs. Great effort by Bobby 3/25 (19 overs), Bug had them in knots with his leggies 4/28 with Rod and Will 1 each. Late start to day 2 due to water getting under the covers. Why didn’t we bat first! We finally start with reduced overs to 64 for the day. Game on! Dave Gillard 52 and Blair 21 get us away to a good start. Wickets in hand, saints need 100 runs in the last 20 overs. Young Riley stands up with 24 and Bobby gets us over the line with 28* with 1 over remaining. Up and about, 3 wins and 1 draw from the first 4 games!

Round 5 v Cranbourne , away –lose Bat first after winning the toss. Big ground, flat pitch all set up for a good day. 36 overs gone and we are all out. Very ordinary batting performance from everyone. They show us how to bat and pass our score after day 1. Day 2 was not much better with them declaring 7/215 with Bug 4/66. Second innings ,we were 7/80 until Kris Little 32 Bobby 39 and young Billy Flavelle playing his first game making 26 getting us to 165.Unfortunately they pass our score. Bad game for the Saints.

Round 6 v Narre South , home – lose Asked to bowl and we bowl all day against a good side, them 6/309. We open with Will and Grant Ansalde 2/44 ,Mack Palmer first game 2/66 (great effort Mack )and Kris 2/39. Day 2 was a tough day but we make sure we fight and ensure we bat as many overs as possible. Saints finally dismissed for 119 but more importantly bat for 75 overs. Riley Sheldon 25 runs off 30+ overs was what was asked of him. Small win for the young saints.

Round 7 v Buckley Ridges , away – lose Sunday one day game against the top side on a very small ground. Win the toss and bat and after 40 overs we post a very competitive score of 8/199 with Grant Ansalde pitching in at the end with a quick fire 40 but the highlight was Simon Bowl Ruthven 119 who was dismissed in the last over. In reply Buckley gets away to a flyer and keeps going. Young Sam Moloney was the only highlight with 2/22 otherwise we all struggled with the ball.

Round 8 v Hampton Park , home –WIN Win the toss and bat at home in a one dayer. We make 137 off 40 overs with Kai Love-Linay 23 and Kris(Special) 19* and Smacka 18.Mitch Hand opens the

34 / 61 bowling and cleans up 2 early wickets with Kris 3/14 and Bob 4/23 bowl late and get the saints over the line for another win.

Round 9 v Dandenong West , away – Lose Big ground and no hesitation to bat first. Dave Gillard 12 and Mitch Hand 11 were the only boys to hit double figures and we are rolled for 44 in 30 overs. We hit the field running and get steady wickets and roll them for 93 Mack Palmer 4/11, Sam 2/17, Will 2/33 and Mitch 2/29. Saints bat again and are 0/29 overnight. B Day 2 we bat the way we should have batted the week before and declare 5/188 with 27 over left. Kris 64* was the best with Smacka and Dave 38 each. Unfortunately Dandy West shut up shop and refused to go for the 5 an over outright win.

Round 10 v Berwick , home- lose They bat first and we roll them for 125,Will 3/11 and Kris 2/22. Saints 6/47 at the end of day 1. Next week we are rolled for 73 with Bob 22 the only one to put up a fight. Second innings we dismiss them for 88 with Mitch and Grant both 4/20 and Will 2/25. Us 7/77 to hold off Berwick for maximum points. Kris 23,Riley 20, Bob 13 and Geoff Kilner 12 were the contributors, big effort boys.

Round 11 v Southern Pirates , away – WIN Last game and again we win the toss and again we bat first. Great start with the Kiln 37 retired hurt, Blair Hutchinson 39 and Smacka 37. Bob 24 and Mitch 15 chip in at the end for a big score of 8/232. Day 2 the saints are on top from the start with Riley Sheldon 4/21, Bob Hower 3/34 and Will and Grant 1 each for a great win to finish off the year.

The Batting average was won by Bob Hower with 172 runs @21.5 with other highlights, Smacka 217 runs for the season @19.7, Blair Hutchinson 159 @13.2, Dave Gillard 141 @ 20.14, Kris Little 171 @ 34.2 (not enough games) Riley Sheldon 136 @10.4 and Simon Ruthven 129 @64.5 from 2 games.

28 players represented the second XI this year with 4 players being promoted to our first XI during the season. Yes we had a number of experienced players this year but the future for the club is our younger players and those who played this year were, Riley Sheldon, Kai Love-Linay, Will Balsillie, Sam Moloney, Tyler Brodie, Ryan Stringer, Billy Flavelle and Mack Palmer.

THIRD XI – Season Report 2013/14

The 3rds again started the season in A Grade. Common sense prevailed after Round 1 and we were moved to B Grade. Whilst we did not win a game before Christmas we were competitive in most games, lapses in the field probably cost us 2 or 3 wins before Christmas. After getting a few of the older boys back after Christmas we were able to win 3 games but we certainly do not have the depth we used to, something the club has to look into. There are a lot of younger boys coming through which is a good sign, the club will have to get the mix right as we will need some experienced players to assist them.

Round 1 V HSD

Them 269 (Karl 3/29, Billy 2/33, Keano 2/43)

Us 153 (Murph 61, Kiln 34)

A tough start to the season against our old rivals. As we all know we struggle with numbers early in the season. Murph manages the troops manfully. After this round common sense prevailed and we went down to B Grade.

Round 2 V Berwick Springs

Them 6/204 (Tristian 2/9, Karl 2/30)

Us 184 (Dave 68, Kiln 36, Grant 22)

Bacca takes the reins as the 2 nd skipper in as many rounds. We bat first and are off to a great start with Dave & Kiln put on an opening partnership of 99 and also bat for 40 overs setting up a great foundation. Apart from a late collapse late in the day everyone contributes in batting the whole of the day.

We are again undermanned with a lot of unavailability’s affecting our bowling stocks especially. Tristian shows promise with the ball and is backed up by Grant & Karl. The game was a lot closer than it looks on paper with the boys fighting hard right to the end.

Round 3 V Narre South

Them 5/156 (Bacca 2/30, Billy 2/38) & 0/36

Us 79 (Karl 19, Murph 19) & 104 (Zealls 35, Murph 16)

The author’s first game of the season and I rock up to be told I am the skipper for the rest of the season (thanks guys). We are pretty undermanned this round due to the Spring Carnival. Not good timing as we are playing one of the better teams of the grade. Thanks to Flash for helping us out. Apart from Murph & Karl the rest of us struggle with the bat and we are all out for 79.

They bat for 50 odd overs and declare at 156. Bacca & Billy are the pick of the bowlers. We were all pretty keen to avoid an outright loss however Murph spraining his ankle on the Friday before

36 / 61 the 2 nd week is not good timing for us. Zealls bats well and hits the ball hard for 35. Murph shows some guts coming in and soaking up some overs for 16 runs. Disappointing loss we can only get better I guess.

Round 4 V Silverton

Us 6/189 (Bear 70, Bacca 34*, Zealls 25)

Them 5/199 (Skeggsy 2/12 (10 overs), Gael 1/47)

We bat first and the aim is to bat the whole day. Kiln & John soak up some overs at the start. Bear comes in at number 3 and smashes the ball all round the park making 70. Bacca & Zealls bat well towards the end of the day to get us through the 72 overs.

Leej gets an early break though and we are looking good however we probably drop 6 catches during the day and that’s what cost us the win. An improved performance from last round against a very average bunch of blokes.

Round 5 V Keysborough

Us 185 (Skeggsy 44, Mac 37*, Ben 23)

Them 9/286 (Skeggsy 4/42)

On a great day for bowling and with a decent attack on paper against a team that has forfeited more games than they have played this year we decide to send them in. Skeggsy & Will bowl well at start and get early wickets. They do have one ring in who we dropped when he was on zero he ends up making 126 which is pretty shattering and is obviously the difference.

We start the 2 nd week at 1 30 they all turn up in taxis, don’t have a scorebook, have 5 stumps and no wicket keeping gear. After a quick discussion we decide to help them out to have a game of cricket. They actually bowl very well and a very good spinner who you would rarely face in synthetic cricket. We are in a lot in a lot of trouble at 7 for 80, before Skeggsy,Mac & Keano get the total to 184. A pretty shattering loss in the scheme of things and the skipper learnt to never ever win the toss and bowl.

Round 6 V Lynbrook

Us 112 (Nat 34, Murph 18)

Them 6/116 (Steve Mannix 2/14 & Karl 2/32)

The last game before the Christmas break and we are undermanned again. Thanks to Jezza we are able to get local footy legends Bluey, Nat & Steve Mannix to play for us. We bat first against a pretty good bowling attack and bat like millionaires being all out by tea with 112 on the board. We bowl pretty well led by Billy & Steve Mannix wickets were falling pretty regularly however we are really up against as they have 112 overs to make the runs.

They pass us early on day 2 and we are thinking we might get another bat however in good news that is not the case and they are happy to pull up stumps and adjourn to the bar.

37 / 61 Round 7 V Southern Pirates

Us 8/152 (Dave 68*, Abo 20)

Them 6/159 (Abo 4/8 off 8 overs)

First game after the Christmas break and the skipper has worked the phones hard during the break getting some older cave guys back in the team. Bacca takes the reins as the skipper’s knee has flared up. We bat first in a one dayer Dave bats very well carrying his bat for 68 against probably the best attack in the comp and also the eventual premiers. Abo tees off at the end with a very classy 20.

They start off very well until Abo comes on and bowls very well taking 4 for 8 and getting them pretty worried. They end up passing us in the 2 nd last over of the game. Some positives from the game namely Dave’s very good knock and Abo showing he has not lost any of his ability.

Round 8 V Berwick

Us 86 (Murph 33)

Them 47 (Paul 4/17, Bacca 4/5, Deano 1/4 off 8 overs)

Another one day game at the home of cricket. The pitch appears to be a mine field as we are all out in 25 overs for 86 with Murph the only one showing some resistance with 33.

With defending such a small total against a top 4 team early wickets are obviously the key. Deano and Paul bowl very well having them in all sorts at 5 for 25. Bacca comes on 2 nd change and bowls a treat we end up getting them out for a remarkable 47. A great team effort in the field and all the bowlers bowled very well. A fantastic win given our low score.

Round 9 V Lyndale

Them 173 (Bacca 4/43, Deano 2/78)

Us 7/428 (Murph 123, Luke Ards 66, Skeggsy 65*, Nev 51, Bear 35, Dog 23)

Against one of our other of old rivals we play them on their postage stamp ground. Deano’s figures do not do him justice as he bowls his customary line and length. They fight hard with the bat. Bacca wraps them up with another 4 wicket haul.

Chasing an awkward total and especially batting at the later part of the day the aim is to make sure we don’t lose any early wickets. We certainly do that with Luke & Nev putting on a 100 for the 1 st wicket. Bear, Dog, Murph and Skeggsy all cash in making runs. Murph especially looking very good. We are happy to pull the pin but there skipper wants to play til tea for some reason. A great win with everyone making a contribution. Probably the best team we have fielded all year.

Round 10 V Parkfield

Them 157 (Skeggsy 3/13, Karl 3/37, Paul 2/36)

Us 250 (Murph 73, Tyler 38, Nat 30, Bacca 27*, Deano 20)

38 / 61 On the hottest day of the summer we are all anxious regarding the toss of the coin. Surprisingly Parkfield win it and decide to bowl first as apparently they need to win outright to have a chance to make the finals. We lose early wickets before Murph (continuing his great form), Nat & Tyler steady the ship. We are poised for a big score as we were 4 for 183 at tea. They bring on a young leg skipper and we have the traditional cave collapse and are 8 for 196. Bacca and Deano put on a good partnership of 50 for the 9 wicket giving us a decent total of 250.

We bowl 15 overs in probably the hottest part of the day and have them 1 for 25 at stumps. The game is evenly poised at 5 for 150 before Karl & Skeggsy come on for a 2 nd spell and they have a massive collapse to be all out for 157. Thanks to Billy and Paddy for assisting us the 2 nd week when we were short in the field. In particular Billy took a screamer of a catch. Another good win and we are determined to finish the season on a good note.

Round 11 V Southern Pirates

Them 3/199 (Luke Ards 1/3, Keano 1/23, Bacca 1/24)

Us 93 (Razor 22, Luke Ards 17, Skeggsy 17, Dog 16)

For various reasons we are pretty undermanned going into the last round. Dog & Luke open the innings and soke up 25 overs. Razor looks very good making 22. We then have another collapse losing 6 for 20. We end batting for 63 overs which is a positive.

We need to get early wickets but they bat very well and end making 3 for 199. After some persuasion common sense prevails and the game is called off at tea. In hindsight our season went one game too many.

In a pretty tough season I would like to thank the usual suspects who make playing in the 3rds enjoyable in Bacca,Karl & Murph and earlier in the season Dave & Geoff. We ended up using 46 players and I would like to thank every one of them for their efforts in particular the ones who answered my calls on Thursday Nights & Saturday Mornings to help us out. Shows great character to do this as it is very easy to put your hand up when things are going well.

I wish my successor all the best.

A lot of time is involved in making a club successful some of us will spend up to 10 hours per week to get the players on the field, training entering results, organising matches and teams etc.

Thanks to The Team Managers and scorers and the Parents for their outstanding participation and help at games this season.

Unfortunately we did not make it to the finals in the 2013 / 2014 season.

UNDER 16 – Season Report 2013/14

It is safe to say our season this year was nowhere near as successful as last years, but yet it was still as enjoyable and many good things came out for each player. It was exciting for the lads this season as we were put into a new and improved league the South Eastern Cricket Association, so we didn’t know who we were going to come up across this year as there were some new teams in our comp. Due to our performance last year on making the Grand Final we were promoted straight into the U/16 A competition. Captain for the year was James Foxy Van Minnen, who I might add did an exceptional job with the lads and Boofie was Vice Captain. It ended up being a very tough year for the boys with us only winning one game for the year, but coming extremely close in several others. The competition was definitely a lot stronger than the previous Federal League. Even though the season didn’t go our way it was great to see all the boys fight it out every game and still manage to attend every training session on the Thursday nights.

It was an outstanding season for our Captain, Foxy making 310 runs for the year with a high score of 60 and a batting average of 51.67. He also ended up coming second in the league for the batting average. A tremendous year for him and he is a player who I’m sure will play a lot of senior first eleven cricket for the cave in the near future. A worthy winner of our batting average and a more than handy bowler to go with it. He didn’t have as good year as he wanted with the ball but he definitely has the talent of being a dominant opening bowler in the senior ranks. WELL DONE ON WINNING THE MARG KAVANAGH TROPHEY. TOP YEAR FOXY.

An extremely good year from Billy “Rednuts” Flavelle gave him the honours for the bowling average. He was for sure the most improved player I’ve seen over the last two years, with his small size and frame he manages to skid the ball onto the batsman which they could not handle. He troubled quite a few teams this season and I cannot wait to see what the future has for him at the club. His batting also improved. His fielding is as always 10/10. He did just as well in senior cricket also. 12 wickets at an average of 13. A great kid. A great year. A great clubman.

Well done to Rydie Clydie Love-Linay on winning the fielding award for the year, he always seemed to clunk every ball that came to him, he definitely lived up to his name as the “Fielding Captain”. He stood up when he was needed, whether it was a catch or a run out. He has a lot of talent as a cricketer with the bat and ball; I just hope he sticks at it next season as he will be a fine cricketer. LOVE YOUR WORK VODDIE.

TOP STUFF from Smokin’ Sam Moloney for jagging himself the Coaches’ Award. One of the nicest blokes I’ve met, he was always first at training, helping me set everything up on game day and then at the end he would help me pack everything away. He would never hesitate when I would ask him to do something which made him a worthy winner of this award. He also had an exceptional year, making his first Cave half century, as well as opening the bowling for us and taking a few wickets. He is a future ones player for the club. Great work Smokin’.

Exceptional performance from Will Nuts Ballsy Balsille on winning the SAINTS LIFE MEMBERS AWARD, which is a prestigious honour for anyone to win. Players who have won that award have gone onto play for their State or even district cricket or even just the Caves first eleven. Will missed a few games this year through injury and work commitments, but when he played he scared his opposing batsman with his pace and bounce with the ball. He managed to take quite a few wickets on turf in our second eleven this year and I’m quite sure he will be up with the big boys in the coming years. SUPER STUFF BALLSY.

43 / 61 A quick thank you to my right hand man William “Hells Angels” Blinkey Sheldon on scoring for me all year couldn’t have done it without you brother, LOVE YOUR FACE!! That’s some serious life member material right there bud. A quick thank you to Pauline Potsy Dunn also for his mentoring and batting advice to my team all year. Keep up your role there mate. Love your work.

Just finally I would like to THANK everyone for putting up with me the whole year, I certainly enjoyed my second year as coach and I would like to encourage all the boys who are moving on from the 16s in sticking around for the U/18s side we are looking at putting together next year, would be a great opportunity if you would like to further develop your cricket as well as playing seniors.

Yours truly,

Paddy PJAM Jamo.

Under 14A and 14C - Season Report 2013/14

The club fielded 2 teams for the 2013/14 season in the newly formed SECA – South Eastern Cricket Association junior competition. Out teams were made up of the 14A team and 14C team and both teams played Fridays. The 14A’s played 11 games for season and though they did not register a win, their improvement was evident as the season progressed. The 14C’s played 11 games for 4 wins.

We fielded a team midseason in the T16 SECA competition. As coaches, we decided to pick the strongest team of players available. There were 3 qualifying games. The boys won their first 2 and unfortunately the 3 rd game was washed out. The boys only missed the final because of washout. The boys played very well.

We had 24 boys for the season and importantly the club welcomed 3 new boys to the club, Oskar McNair, Lochie Davies and Ben Wise. There was 10 2 nd year boys and 14 1 st year boys.

To assist in the development of the boys, Geoff and I offered 2 training sessions per week, Tuesday afternoon and Sunday morning. The boys responded well to the extra session and all sessions were well attended. The Sunday session had a greater focus on individual development with individual nets with ball machine and individual bowling coaching with assistance from ex Victorian Railways Player, Paul Matthews.

We were able to mix the players throughout the 2 divisions. This was well received by the players and by season’s end the boys’ techniques had developed and improved.

We also had 9 of the boys play senior cricket throughout the season. Again, important for their development.

We would like to thank the committee for all their support and assistance. Special mention also to the parents and those that assisted in scoring and coaching. All this was greatly appreciated.

Blair and Geoff

Bowling Highlights

• 14A: 7/98 versus Hampton • 14A: 7/130 versus the top team Cheltenham Park • 14C: 7/48 off 22 overs versus Beaumaris • 14C: 9/55 off 22 overs versus Dingley • 14C: Bowled Kingston Heath out for 63 off 21 overs • 14A: Will Clifton 4/9 versus Beaumaris, Matt Moloney 3/14 versus Cheltenham Park – top team • 14C: Cale Love Linay 3/17, Lochie Davies 3/32

Fielding Highlights

• Though the players improved their fielding throughout the season, it is an area that needs to be worked on and practised. As coaches, we need to have greater emphasis and planning with fielding drills. In saying this, there were some terrific catches taken and some excellent run outs.

Wicket Keeping

• We had a focus on specialising the role in both teams. Jeremy Cullen and Ethan Hersey Kilner did the keeping in the 14A’s and both show potential. Ethan with his strong ‘hand eye’ skills shows some talent. Charlie Palmer was excellent in his progress in 14C’s. He is a first year under 14 and he should be the keeper in the 14’s next year. He has good hand eye skills, moves well and is enthusiastic. Took 2 stumping’s.

Under 12A - Season Report 2013/14

The under 12 A this season consisted of 13 players with a mixture of 9 year olds, 10 year olds, 11 year olds and 12 year olds. . The improvement in the Team was a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the Team and all the Dedicated Parents. I would like to thank everyone one who has been involved. Although we were outplayed on many occasions during the season by some more experienced opposition teams, all of our players stepped up to the pressure of a match and performed well in some tight matches. The team spirit of our group of 9, 10, 11 and 12 year olds was quite inspiring. We had a Parent versus kids game this year there were some stand out performances by the Mums and we are thinking of fielding a women’s team in 2014 /2015 season. This year we finished 7 th on the ladder Highlights of the season defeating Aspendale CC under 12A SECA premiers 2013/2014 in round 9 at Glen Street in a very tight match. lt was a magnificent game of cricket and a great reward to the boys for a fantastic Team effort. Round 10 the team performed like champions again when we played the boys from Mordi White and we batted first and made 106 runs and then we rolled Mordi white all out for 34 ! Any other club would have made Mordi White bat again, but as our Club teaches our junior players to play cricket in the true spirit of the game and everyone gets a go we decided to end the game early. Special thanks to Ben Burke for looking after the boys while I was away and did a great Job of umpiring, scoring, coaching, cooking first aid etc. Special thanks to all the Mums and Dads this season for scoring and getting the boys to the games on Friday night on time and enjoying a few drinks while cheering the boys on. 2013 / 2014 wrap up. The Team.

Andrew Loffel nick name Andy pandy the youngest player in the team won the batting average and plays cricket with natural all round ability bowling, batting , fielding and can score if required ! Andy is a born leader a potential future Captain and I believe will represent SECA in Rep cricket in the next couple of seasons and his leadership qualities were demonstrated when he would attend the rookies games and often help out! Andy Best Performances batting 30 not out against Aspendale including 5 fours. Bowling 1/7 against Mordi Red.

Blake Fuller Nick name Blake His last year of under 12’s a natural all round player. Only played 8 matches due to little Athletics commitments. Hits the ball very hard and loves to attack the bowlers and keep the run rate moving along! He decided to bowl leg spin in round 10 and finished the season off second in the bowling averages taking 5 wickets with an average of 10.4 and 4 th on the batting averages with 7 innings 55 runs including 9 fours and a batting average of 11. Blake is a very keen fieldsman and always supported his team mates! Blake’s Best Performances batting 22 against Aspendale CC Best Bowling 2/0 off 1.2 overs versus Mordi Red.

Mitchell Bean nick name Mitch has one more season in under 12’s an outstanding all round wicket keeper batsman who is also a handy bowler. Mitchell is great behind the stumps and was involved 11 dismissals through the season. Mitchell came third on the batting averages with 9 innings 89 runs including 12 fours with a batting average 12.71. Mitchell’s batting technique is very correct I believe Mitchell needs to work hard on his running between wickets. Bowling Mitchell again performed well coming third on the bowling averages taking five wickets at an average of 10.8. Mitchell’s Best Performances batting 23 not out against Mordi Red. Most dismissals 5 against Mordi white Round 10 including 4 fantastic catches behind the stumps. Best Bowling 3/1 against Mordi White Round 6.

Rhys Gillard nick name Buckets so why do we call him Buckets bats we know he bats left and bowls right but this kid has amazing outfield catching ability and took two of the best outfield catches I have seen in under 12 cricket. ! Buckets came second in the batting averages with an average of 15 including 5 not outs he batted for many overs and quite often was the team member to hold up one end for while wickets tumbled at the other end. Buckets needs to work on turning the strike over with his selection of cricket shots especially the leg glance so the score board keeps moving to develop his game. Bowling was a strength for Buckets the opposition had trouble scoring against him and was very unlucky not to take more wickets. Rhys Best Performances Batting 16 not out versus Aspendale CC round 9 Best Bowling 2/7 Round 2 against Chelsea.

51 / 61

Jack Flavelle Nick name Jack won the bowling averages 5.9 took 13 wickets for 77 runs Jack would have won the SECA bowling averages but because everyone in the 12a team had a bowl Jack didn’t bowl the 30 overs required to qualify for the averages. Well done Jack. Jack was a reliable member in the field and was always keeping the boys focused. Jack bats left handed hits the ball hard but needs to try and bat a little longer as he gets older. Jack is a good team man to have around the players. Jack’s Best Performance Bowling 3/2 versus Mordi white round 10. Batting versus Mordi Red round 4 11 runs.

Vikrant Vinodhram nick name Vik has one more season in under 12’s is a fantastic fieldsman especially at fine leg in round 10 when we were playing against Mordi White, Vik picked up the ball in one hand and fired the ball back to Mitch in a flash and the batsman was run out by a mile ! Vik bowls well but needs to work on his line and length if he hits the right length he will pick up more wickets as he proved during the season with some outstanding un playable full length deliveries. When it comes to batting Vik can hit the ball very hard and his innings against Parkdale 15 not out was pleasure to watch. Vik’s Best Performance Batting 15 not out versus Parkdale round 7 Best Bowling 2/0 versus Highett Round 3.

Hamish Balsillie nick name Hamish. Last year of under 12’s Well this young fella can play cricket he has all the right natural ability to be a very good cricketer. Hamish can bat, field, bowl and is a handy back up keeper I hope Hamish can train with more effort in the future and work out when it is time to be serious about his cricket I know he is a brilliant fieldsman especially in the covers as he proved this by taking some great catches Hamish filled in for the 4 th 11 seniors this year and was lucky to get to have a game with his Dad JB. Hamish’s Best Performance Batting 11 not out versus Aspendale round 9 he opened the this game and stayed at the crease for a long time, Hamish took two fantastic catches in the field in the same match. Best Bowling 1/7 against Mordi Red round 4.

Harvey Burke nick name Burkey. One more season of under 12’s to go a great season unlucky not to take a few more wickets than he did, a very economical bowler who will do well in the seniors. Burkey can move it both ways and is extremely economical with his bowling. Now Burkey loves to bat at number 5 and he managed to make his highest score of 18 not out including 3 magnificent fours against Mordi White at George Woods reserve they were flying off his bat all around the ground and Burkey just happened to be batting at number 5 on this day. Burkey is good all round fielder and can be placed in any fielding position. Burkey needs to encourage his teams mates and back his own ability and encourage his team mates on the field and will be an on field leader in the 12A team next season. Harvey’s Best Performance Batting 18 not out versus Mordi White round 6 Best Bowling 2/1 against Mordi White round 10.

Riley Pickett nick name Riley Now how keen is Riley, the Pickett’s moved down to Mt Eliza early in the season in November 2013 but Riley is a great team man and continued to play with his team mates. Riley improved every game and always finished the game with a big smile on his face. Riley took a fantastic catch at deep fine leg in round 5 against Aspendale and to see his teams run to him and celebrate this catch was team celebrations are all about. Riley needs to attack the ball in the field and when he bats. Riley has potential to be a very good swing bowler and needs back himself and drive through the crease with his run up! Riley’s Best Performance batting 6 runs Riley was not out on 2 important occasions and ran hard between the wickets Best Bowling 1/8 versus Parkdale round 7.

Commercial Break The Twins well which ones will I start with, it is not often you get to have two sets of twins in one cricket team but these boys seem to be TV stars as well as been seen on target advertisements wearing spectacles.

Liam Segar nick name Liam , last season of under 12 cricket , Bats right and always checks his stance before the bowlers come into to bowl Liam batted well and was always ready to open the innings if required. Liam finished the season scoring 57 runs for the season with an average of 8.14 Liam only took 1 wicket for the season but played with a broken hand for the first 4 games He is a left hand bowler with potential to move the ball once he learns how to control the swinging ball. We found the under 12 balls were very difficult to control this season especially for left hand bowlers. Liam was fantastic in the field and was always keen to take a catch or run out the opposition including his best fielding performance in round 11 against Beaumaris being involved in three run out dismissals. Liam’s Best Performances Batting 13 not out versus Parkdale. Best Bowling 1/15 unlucky not to take more wickets

Lucas Segar nick name Lucas, last season of under 12 cricket Bats Left, Bowls Left throws right. A really good team mate to have around the team and was always ready to encourage his team mates and have a joke. Lucas has extremely good hand eye coordination is a natural cricketer and listens to his coaches. I believe Lucas will develop as a cricketer with his bowling he bowled so many balls that totally confused the batsmen. Lucas will take more wickets as he gets older as he can swing the ball both ways. Batting highest score 16 not out versus Aspendale round 5. Lucas is a patient batsman who waits for the right ball to hit. Fielding Highlight took an absolute screamer diving forward at George Woods Reserve round 3 against Mordi White. Lucas’s Best Performances Batting 16 not out versus Aspendale round 5 and 13 versus Aspendale round 9 involved in a great partnerships with his team mates and being there at the end of the innings . Best Bowling 1/1 against Highett ..

52 / 61

Tom Kercheval nick name Tom , last season of under 12 cricket bowls right and bats right handy in the field Tom turned out to be a good opening batsman for the second half of the season he always batted with good technique and watched the ball onto his bat although Tom didn’t score a lot of runs he always batted for good periods against the New ball bowlers. Tom finished with the same batting average as his brother Zac 4.86 Tom is a handy right arm medium bowler who can swing the ball both ways and always puts the ball in the right areas, the opposition had trouble scoring off Tom he finished with a great economy rate. Tom’s Best Performances Bowling 2/1 against Mordi White round 10 Best Batting 8 against Aspendale round 5.

Zachary Kercheval nick name Zac , last season of under 12 cricket bats right bowls right and was our backup wicket keeper. Zac was an important member of the team and was able to do it all. Zac was involved in five dismissals as keeper and took a great catch when he was keeping against Mordi White in round round 6. Zac’s bowling was great when he pitched the ball up and attacked the crease. Zac starting Batting with confidence towards the end of the season as was rewarded with some good scores I recommend Zac to use a lighter bat in the under 14’s so he gets better value for his shots finished with the same batting average as Tom 4.86. Zac’s Best Performances Batting 17 not out against Mordi White round 10 Best Bowling round 1 1/6 against Beaumaris Fielding round 4 against Mordi Red taking a great catch and assisting in two run outs.

We also had 3 boys from the under 12B Blue team Trae, Jude and Louis fill in for a game when we were short on numbers after Christmas. Trae Love – Linay the youngest of the dynasty bowled great taking 1/3 off two overs, fielded magnificently and was unlucky with the bat. Trae is one to watch in the future a very talented all-rounder with a fantastic batting technique.

Louis Bateson bowled well 2 overs 0/5 looks ready to step into the under 12A team next year is a great fielder and a good bat according to his stats in the 12B team he did really well considering he wasn’t going to play at the start of the season.

Jude another Burke has the perfect stance at the crease batted well and scored 5 runs in his only innings. Jude will be ready to step up into the 12a team next year he is a keen cricketer with plenty of natural ability.

Thanks to the Under 12 Coaches and Managers Rocket, Eddie & Matt and their helpers Amberlie , Chris ,Barry Cathy, Ben Dave, Vinod . Thanks to the Kiln for getting the boys registered and on the Park and keeping this great cricket club alive.

Under 12B Gold - Season Report 2013/14

By Eddie Vella - coach of Under 12B Gold

The under 12B Gold team consisted of 13 players with the majority coming up from Rookies this season mixed with some second year players. The team played some positive cricket all season with a few good wins. With some long hot days we encountered in the season the team struggled and were over run by other teams.

The biggest improvement required is with our batting side. The players were caught out or bowled out many times but this is a skill which can built on and improved with time and experience. Overall the team improved with their bowling and fielding, doing very well in these areas on game days. The Players

Hayden Vella: Hayden had an amazing season of cricket this year. He tried really hard with the ball and this major improvement was proven with him receiving the trophy for best bowling average. He bowled out approx 5 players (a standout) during the season, great effort!

Kane Vella: In general Kane had a great season with the bat and ball and his outfielding has improved this season. Kane listens carefully to team instructions and really enjoys his cricket which shows during training and on game day.

Callum Amor: Callum spent most of the year as our main wicket keeper. He had a brilliant year with the gloves taking some great catches and stumpings. Callum has a natural flair for this position, his ability seems to flow naturally and seamlessly. He also improved with the bat making some good partnerships.

Jack Dunn: Jack had an awesome cricket season and won the trophy for the best batting average. He is an outstanding cricketer with great ability at outfielding. In general he has raised the standard for the other team members which most of them have followed.

Max Ford: Max had a great season and started to bowl spin towards the end of the season which is a great achievement. He also made some great runs with the bat. He really enjoys his cricket and has really improved and come a long way.

Trent Taylor: Trent really started to concentrate in the outfield this season and has improved enormously. His running between the wickets also improved and bowling has come along also. He brings great team spirit to the team. 54 / 61

Matt Hannan: Matt has had an amazing year of cricket. He really excelled with all parts of the game and even had some time enjoying wicket keeping with a few catches to his name. He is easy to coach and listens well.

Ben Goodes: Ben has really stepped up this season. He worked really hard to improve his bowling technique and he was constantly working on improving his batting which really showed in his performance towards the end of the season He listens well at training and always tries his best both at training and on game day.

Tyler Pearson: Tyler had an amazing cricket season. He really applies himself and gives 100% attention at all times to all aspects of his cricketing. He impr oved enormously throughout the season especially at bowling and fielding. His persistence and great attitude stood out this season and was awarded for this by receiving the coaches award.

Ryder Nash: Ryder has really taken the next step in cricketing. His batting, bowling and outfielding improved enormously. He made a great partnership with Jack and together they made some crucial runs for the team.

Ryan Glover: Ryan had an outstanding cricket season. He really worked hard on improving his bowling and as the season progressed he had fewer and fewer wides on game day. His batting and fielding also improved, I was so impressed with his determination and constantly trying to give his best.

Travis Amor: Travis is an amazing competitor in all aspects of cricket. His batting and bowling improved and he bowled two consecutive players (Golden Ducks) in one game, very impressive! He did some great work in the outfield too.

Mitch Keatly: Mitch has had a wonderful year of cricket. He has improved with the bat and bowling and enjoyed fielding on the rope stopping some boundaries with his feet and defying the other team of some 4’s! Excellent work by Mitchell. I’m sure he will come back and improve even more next season.

Conclusion:

All members on this team need to be commended for their dedication and commitment, they were a great team to coach, listening to instructions really well, putting in loads of effort at training and then playing their absolute hearts out at the games each week even through some really hot weather. They’ve been a great team to coach and I’m super proud of all of these players.

To finish off I would like to thank all the coaches for their help during the season. I would especially like to thank Tina and Amberlie for helping me so much during the season. I think we had an amazing year of cricket and look forward to season 2014-2015. Also great work to the other coaches, Rocket Rod, John Fuller and Matthew Skeggs for their team’s great seasons’ also.

The Season It was a pleasure to coach the under12 Blue again and was made fun and easy by having a great group of young cricketers and a supportive group of parents. The players combined well together with a mix of 4 x 1st time players, 5 x last year rookies moving up to B’s, 4 x 2nd year players. The boys all supported one another well both in the field and batting. Having 13 players the team was happy sharing restricted batting time and fielding time to give all players equal opportunities. At all times while batting the boys all valued their wicket. All the players bowled very good line and length and should have finished with better bowling figures. We finished 5 th in our division from 9 teams, with 4 wins, 1 draw and 5 loses. The 5 games we lost were all to teams that finished in the top 4 - Chelsea Heights by 1 run, Mordi Red by 1 run, Mentone by 5 runs, which shows that with our very young under 12 teams we will be much stronger in the coming years.

ROOKIES - Season Report 2013/14

After a solid pre-season the boys were keen to see how they would go in the new junior competition. We had good numbers this year with 13 very keen cricketers:

Jude Aldred: Jude came over from Mordialloc a few games into the season. One of the older boys in the team, Jude showed a lot of promise with the bat making quite a few runs after Xmas.

Will Bean: A natural cricketer, Will was the only left arm bowler in the team. Always looked likely to get wickets when he was bowling. Also a very handy batsman who hits the ball hard. With another season under his belt will be a very handy cricketer.

Marcus Burke: The youngest member of the Burke Dynasty at the cave. Marcus is a very promising top order batsman who will develop very well when he gets bigger. Also a handy bowler. Marcus is very enthusiastic in the field.

Sam Cormack: Sam joined us a few games into the season. Sam has a great eye as a batsman also very handy with the ball and a good fieldsman. Sam is another boy who will have learnt a lot from his first year.

Austin Gillard: Austin shows a lot of promise as a top order batsman. Has a great defence and a textbook technique. Austin is also a very promising wicketkeeper following his dads lead. A very coachable player and is always keen to listen and learn.

IIan Kaplan: Ilan was the standout performer with both bat & ball. IIan made a lot of runs with the bat and always looked like getting wickets, also very good in the field. A born competitor and a natural leader he led the way for the younger boys. I hope IIan continues his cricket journey at the cave.

James Loffel: One of our key bowlers. James is a natural cricketer, I very rarely saw anyone swing the ball as much as James did this season in the rookies. James also managed to get a hatrick against Aspendale. Also a handy batsman. James and his brother Andy could form a very good opening bowling attack in the seniors in a few years.

Nick McCarthy: “Big Bird” as he was known to his team mates, was the tallest rookie in the comp almost the height of the coach. Very raw, towards the end of the season Nick realised he could be a real handful as an opening bowler Nick managed to pick up a bagful of wickets after Xmas. I hope Nick sticks with cricket as he could become a very handy cricketer.

Harvey Nash: Our opening batsman. Harvey has a very good technique with the bat and made quite a few runs during the season. Harvey also is very handy with ball and in the field. With age and size Harvey could be a very good senior opening batsman.

Lucas Nicholls: The big improver in the group. Lucas was a real bolter with the bat, with a lot of hard work at home & training Lucas hard work paid off and made quite a few runs in the 2 nd half of the season. Lucas was our main wicketkeeper and showed he was a natural at this.

59 / 61 Shane Nicholls: The youngest member of the team. Shane has a good technique with the bat and will only get better as he gets older and bigger. Shane never missed a training session and was always keen to listen and learn.

Ben Skeggs: Ben has a good technique with the bat and shows promise as a middle order batsman. With some coaching at training Ben changed his bowling technique with good results towards the end of the season. With experience Ben could become a very handy allrounder.

Brodie Templeton: Brodie was the most experienced cricketer in the team. A big hitting middle order batsman, Brodie always looked very dangerous when batting. Also a very mean and quick bowler, Brodie was very consistent with the ball and regularly picked up wickets during the season. Another boy who I hope sticks at the cave.

Our boys usually had to play teams who were a lot more experienced than us but our boys stuck to it all season and improved greatly during the season and will be a lot better for the experienced. I must say it was rather disappointing that a lot of clubs in the grade had kids who had been playing for quite a few years in particular our neighbours down the road. Our club should be commended for using the rookies grade in the right way.

I would like to thank Ben Burke for his help at training in particular with the boys bowling. Jeff Loffel scoring, Andy & Rhys Gillard for filling in when we were short occasionally. Thanks also to the other under 12 coaches in Eddie & Rod in particular at training. John Fuller was fantastic as well as junior co ordinator and was of great help.

Last of all I would like to thank my right hand man Dave Gillard who did a great job helping organising myself and the boys. I would have struggled without his assistance and advice.

It was a pleasure to coach such a great bunch of kids.

Hope to see all the boys back at the cave next season.

60 / 61 Milo T20 Blast - Season Report 2013/14

It has been my pleasure this year to have run the Milo programs at our Club. The future of any club is based on the ongoing participation of children from 6 years of age in formats of the game that promote skills, a degree of competition and of the most importance – fun! Another key contributing factor to the success of our junior programs is the enthusiasm of the SBSLCC Committee in supporting all aspects of the in2CRICKET and T20 Blast programs. My thanks to John Fuller, Noel Fitzgibbon and the Committee.

This year we had our inaugural team participating on the T20 Blast competition. The idea of T20 Blast is to give kids the chance to play exciting games of T20. Designed for girls and boys aged 8-12 who know the basics of cricket and want to experience all the action of T20, MILO T20 Blast maximises participation for everyone! This means that by the time these kids get into Rookies, they are capable of bowling the ball the length of a cricket pitch with one bounce, effectively hitting a moving ball, catching and fielding. This is the ideal pathway for our young cricketers.

Our team consisted of 8 players, 2 girls and 6 boys and a substitute player, also a girl. These kids adapted to the format very quickly and parents noticed a very rapid improvement on all skills required to play the game.

Our team members this year were Alex Goodman, Daniel Sheppard, Elly Reeves, Laura Reeves, Thomas Reeves, Mackenzie Manning, Michael Mesic, Nathan Ferguson and our super substitute was Skye Ferguson.

Thank you to the parents that came along each week to support the kids, umpire and score – this makes all the difference. Milo in2CRICKET - Season Report 2013/14

While we only had small numbers in this program the enthusiasm by the participants certainly made up for it. These younger Milo participants trained in their own group but alongside the T20 Blast kids. The in2CRICKET program is designed to help kids to develop social skills, physical fitness, sportsmanship and basic cricket knowledge. Playing in some of the end of training session matches certainly saw these younger kids playing well above their weight in all aspects of the game.

Our participants this year were Austen Gillard, Patrick Henry, Tom Gillard, Max Calvez, Andrew Broadley, Ashton Wise, Jakob Savic and Jackson Koop.

Thank you to the parents for their assistance and commitment in running this program.

A special thanks to the team at Cricket Victoria for their support and to Stuart Clark our regional Cricket Victoria Manager.
