We have a number a great people and different characters at the club with one thing in common – the success of our cricket club on and off the field. This year I had a number of dedicated people who assisted in the running of the club. Geoff Kilner – Treasurer, also known as the Mayor of Aspendale, made another enormous contribution this season. This is the first time I have personally witnessed the volume of work this man does for the club. From running BBQ’s on a Thursday night to sending off detailed grant applications to running the in2 cricket on Thursday afternoons to co- ordinating the bar. Thanks Geoff for another great year. Noel Brodie – secretary, thanks Noel this year for your efforts on the paper side of the club as well as the success of a grant for the new cash register and new score boards. Matthew Skeggs- Vice President/DDCA Delegate, my right hand man who captained the 3rd XI as well as communicating with the younger club members through texting and face book. Greg Cole – junior co-ordinator/captain of the 5th XI and general committee who will not be continuing as his junior role next season after 10+ years but will be available as a mentoring role to the new junior co-ordinator.Chris Maher – general committee –great job as per usual with the newsletter and e- mails to members as well as organizing the $1000.00 draw. Dave Anderson – general committee – sensational effort this year in his work on and around browns reserve and the cleaning of the cave all year. Hope to see you back next year. Bill Sheldon – General committee –FDCA delegate and because of Bill’s generosity we all enjoyed the big LCD TV in the cave. Mitch Hand & Peter Hope were major contributors to the success of the bar this year. Ian Baxter –Life Members co- ordinator for the last 2 decades- Again successfully ran Rock Day with the assistance from Peter Smith as well as Excellent Friday and Thursday night raffles. And finally Bondi Rd turf wicket was again professionally managed/curated by both Travis(Rev) Stillman and Chris(Disco) Neiwouldt. Thanks for a great pitch all year. Justin Balsillie - thanks for your assistance this year in e-mails/communication and behinds the scenes work. The above people are the main contributors to the club but every member has put their individual stamp on our club and I thank you all. My first agenda as President was to ensure the communication with members increased from previous years. Weekly e- mails for team selections, social news and fortnightly newsletters from My Cricket and regular updated saints web page was achieved this year. As a committee we also implemented “Back to the Cave” which is the traditional Saturday evening match day summaries of both senior and junior results with a focus on junior teams inviting parents and friends with food, beer and champagne for all. These social events happened four times throughout the year and were a huge success for the club with big numbers back to the cave on all 4 occasions with a number of new saints members helping out. Thirdly, new (or back) to the club this year was the embossed saints glass mug “Cave Awards”.3 stubbies of beer was out and an embossed glass mug was given out on Saturday nights for the high achievers on that day. Other highlights throughout the year was the introduction of imported Saints embossed cricket caps (baggy green style) at a competitive price of $20.00 each so all members (juniors and seniors) can wear the saints colours with pride. Also this year Woosh started an association with the Richmond Cricket Club with their cricket players assisting in our training nights(including Jim Higgs) on Wednesday and Tuesday nights as well as our juniors attending training and playing games at RCC. $1000.00 draw, our mayor fund raiser was again a big money spinner for the club and was an enormous success with 95% of tickets returned and sold. Marsie and Dave Baxter worked the draw with Rod Love-Linay and Geoff organized the food. The Cave Golf Day is a favourite of mine and was a day enjoyed by all at Rossdale Golf Club. 10 under from Paul/Jeremy/Junior and Steve was the winning score with another 2 groups on 9 under. Thanks to Mat Orf for organizing this event. Page 5 of 65 Sponsors this year was also a focus of mine which we now have a four tiered sponsorship package in place ranging from a Basic to Gold levels for any and every business/ex-players to contribute to the club. E-View increased their package to a Gold level this year as did Kingsley from Lifecare from Bronze to Silver. Buyers Choice (Flash) continues his support of the club with South Beach Handyman Services increased his sponsorship to Bronze for season 11/12.New sponsor to the cave this year was ex-player/committee member George Berg from Tweed Ultimate Apartments. Dominace contributed again with Elgas donating a large BBQ which was raffled on Rock Day. On the field in season 11/12 the saints had 5 senior sides in the DDCA and 5 junior teams in the FDCA including a very successful u/12 Rookies. The club continued with our professional player Adam Muirhead this season. Our Ist XI was captained by Paul Dunn with some great results on field especially after x/mas. Thanks to all the other on field leaders ;Lucas Johnson, Matthew Skeggs, Bob Hower and Greg Cole as well as the junior managers Steve Grey/Greg Cole, Justin Balsillie, Geoff Kilner/Blair Hutchinson, John Fuller and the rookies with Eddie Vella. Our thirds made the semi finals this year with the fourths playing off in the GF with all junior sides making the finals. Presentation nights were again a huge success, both held at the Cave. The junior presentation night was a huge success with big numbers at the cave on that Wednesday night. The senior presentation night was again catered for was a celebration of the year. Congratulation to all the trophies for season 2011/12 as well as Adam Murphy and Blair Hutchinson who both won the competition (DDCA) batting awards for their grades. Season 2011/12 for me was a very successful year in that we have introduced a number of new innovations to the club including Back to the Cave which brought the juniors and junior parents and seniors together on the one night for our traditional match day summaries. Some would say “we are building a community here at the cave”. The most challenging role for me was to bring together all the different characters and personalities from the senior members to junior members, to dads of juniors, playing their first year of cricket to the older experienced members who have been at the club for years. I believe the committee built a club this year to cater for all types as well built an atmosphere where every club member and past members are most welcome. I will be back next year to continue the success of the saints on and off the field and I would encourage members (young and old ) to join the committee next year. Go the SAINTS. Noel Smacka Fitzgibbon Page 6 of 65 Secretary’s Report 2012 This year saw another Cave legend step in and take the reigns. Noel ‘Smacca’ Fitzgibbon has been a fantastic fit and has driven the club by growing sponsorship, building team unity and growing closer ties to the junior club (with Back to the Cave nights). From my point of view this cricket season was relatively smooth one. Because of good weather we managed to play most games and unlike previous years we were able to field full teams for all grades. All teams were well run and that thanks must go to the Captains. We had 2 senior teams make finals this year. An undermanned 3rds led by Matthew Skeggs lost a close fought Semi final and Bob Howers’ 4ths falling at the last hurdle.

The summer weather has not lived up to expectations. Who mentioned climate change? England have continued to make great progress in Test matches but their performances in One Day Internationals still leaves a lot to be desired. The difficult tour to South Africa this winter will be good preparation for next year’s Ashes series. Is the Aussie team growing old together or will they come up with some interesting replacements? Perhaps there are a few playing in the Championship this summer!! At the time of writing Worcester are struggling. After a reasonable start, relegation is on the cards in the Championship, whilst promotion in the Totesport League is in the balance.

The newsletter of the Council of Cricket Societies CCS Editorial address: [email protected] Autumn News 34a Chawn Hill, Stourbridge DY9 7JB 2016 The views expressed in this newsletter are not necessarily those of the Council or any individual cricket society Backspin Magazine The fate of Backspin is still to be determined, though it looks very much as if issue 12 will be the last. This is a great pity as previous issues were chock full, cover to cover, with items of cricket interest of yesteryear, which, ironically, may be one of the reasons for its demise. I offer the following observations. The retro title was launched in 2013 as the sister publication to Backpass, which was founded in 2007. Both titles were published by a small group of enthusiasts, which has now dwindled to just the founder. Backspin is probably unique in that it carries absolutely no advertising, which is crucial for survival. The editor told me that he has to pay a crippling £10k just to put the title on the shelves of WH Smith. Probably one of the biggest causes of failure was that the obvious target market of older cricket followers is largely unaware of the magazine’s existence. I would have thought a mailshot plus a complimentary copy should have been sent to all cricket societies – perhaps it was. Did any society ever receive any mailshots? To quote John Simons, the editor of The Cricket Society News Bulletin, “Backspin packs far more interest in a single issue than in a year’s worth of the competition.” The potentially farewell issue #12 was planned to appear in June (originally May), and actually arrived in July! If you go to Smith’s you’ll have to hunt for it in the larger branches.

SouthCoastTaxiPHILLIP ISLAND & SAN REMO DVERTISESouthCoastTaxi AYour Community Voice! WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2020 R $1.40 Incl. GST Counting underway Interim counts from this year’s elections indicate Michael Whelan will return as a Bass Coast Shire councillor. Joining him at the table will likely be Ronnie Bauer and David Rooks. Whelan topped the interim count with 1945 fi rst-preference votes, followed by Bauer on 1619 and Rooks on 1584. The next closest candidate was Jeni Jobe on 694. With preferences still to be distrib- uted, the results are not yet confi rmed. It is worth remembering that in the 2016 election, the third-highest vote win- ner in each ward did not become a coun- cillor once preferences were distributed. However given the lead of the three top candidates, it’s unlikely any other Island Ward candidate will be able to catch up through preferences. Trish Cerini was in fi fth position (554), followed by Ash Belsar (500), Mikhaela Barlow (303) and Darrell Silva (252). Interim votes show Western Port Ward is experiencing a shake-up, with newcomer Rochelle Halstead polling strongly. Current councillor Bruce Kent re- ceived the highest number of fi rst pref- erence votes (2474), followed by Hal- stead with 2055. Clare Le Serve (1848) and Geoff Ellis (1435) will battle it out for the third spot. The result is seen by some as a protest vote by Newhaven and San Remo vot- ers against council’s handling of the sit- ing of a regional skate park fi rst at San Remo and then at Newhaven, and oppo- New councillors for Island sition to the provision of off-leash dog areas at Cape Woolamai by Cr Geoff Ellis in particular.
