PRESIDENTS REPORT

Being President for the first time in all my time at St Brigids St Louis Cricket Club, I can honestly say I have enjoyed the experience and feel we are all involved in a club which we can feel privilege to be a part of. We have a number a great people and different characters at the club with one thing in common – the success of our cricket club on and off the field. This year I had a number of dedicated people who assisted in the running of the club. Geoff Kilner – Treasurer, also known as the Mayor of Aspendale, made another enormous contribution this season. This is the first time I have personally witnessed the volume of work this man does for the club. From running BBQ’s on a Thursday night to sending off detailed grant applications to running the in2 cricket on Thursday afternoons to co- ordinating the bar. Thanks Geoff for another great year. Noel Brodie – secretary, thanks Noel this year for your efforts on the paper side of the club as well as the success of a grant for the new cash register and new score boards. Matthew Skeggs- Vice President/DDCA Delegate, my right hand man who captained the 3rd XI as well as communicating with the younger club members through texting and face book. Greg Cole – junior co-ordinator/captain of the 5th XI and general committee who will not be continuing as his junior role next season after 10+ years but will be available as a mentoring role to the new junior co-ordinator.Chris Maher – general committee –great job as per usual with the newsletter and e- mails to members as well as organizing the $1000.00 draw. Dave Anderson – general committee – sensational effort this year in his work on and around browns reserve and the cleaning of the cave all year. Hope to see you back next year. Bill Sheldon – General committee –FDCA delegate and because of Bill’s generosity we all enjoyed the big LCD TV in the cave. Mitch Hand & Peter Hope were major contributors to the success of the bar this year. Ian Baxter –Life Members co- ordinator for the last 2 decades- Again successfully ran Rock Day with the assistance from Peter Smith as well as Excellent Friday and Thursday night raffles. And finally Bondi Rd turf was again professionally managed/curated by both Travis(Rev) Stillman and Chris(Disco) Neiwouldt. Thanks for a great pitch all year. Justin Balsillie - thanks for your assistance this year in e-mails/communication and behinds the scenes work. The above people are the main contributors to the club but every member has put their individual stamp on our club and I thank you all. My first agenda as President was to ensure the communication with members increased from previous years. Weekly e- mails for team selections, social news and fortnightly newsletters from My Cricket and regular updated saints web page was achieved this year. As a committee we also implemented “Back to the Cave” which is the traditional Saturday evening match day summaries of both senior and junior results with a focus on junior teams inviting parents and friends with food, beer and champagne for all. These social events happened four times throughout the year and were a huge success for the club with big numbers back to the cave on all 4 occasions with a number of new saints members helping out. Thirdly, new (or back) to the club this year was the embossed saints glass mug “Cave Awards”.3 stubbies of beer was out and an embossed glass mug was given out on Saturday nights for the high achievers on that day. Other highlights throughout the year was the introduction of imported Saints embossed cricket caps (baggy green style) at a competitive price of $20.00 each so all members (juniors and seniors) can wear the saints colours with pride. Also this year Woosh started an association with the Richmond Cricket Club with their cricket players assisting in our training nights(including Jim Higgs) on Wednesday and Tuesday nights as well as our juniors attending training and playing games at RCC. $1000.00 draw, our mayor fund raiser was again a big money spinner for the club and was an enormous success with 95% of tickets returned and sold. Marsie and Dave Baxter worked the draw with Rod Love-Linay and Geoff organized the food. The Cave Golf Day is a favourite of mine and was a day enjoyed by all at Rossdale Golf Club. 10 under from Paul/Jeremy/Junior and Steve was the winning score with another 2 groups on 9 under. Thanks to Mat Orf for organizing this event.

Sponsors this year was also a focus of mine which we now have a four tiered sponsorship package in place ranging from a Basic to Gold levels for any and every business/ex-players to contribute to the club. E-View increased their package to a Gold level this year as did Kingsley from Lifecare from Bronze to Silver. Buyers Choice (Flash) continues his support of the club with South Beach Handyman Services increased his sponsorship to Bronze for season 11/12.New sponsor to the cave this year was ex-player/committee member George Berg from Tweed Ultimate Apartments. Dominace contributed again with Elgas donating a large BBQ which was raffled on Rock Day. On the field in season 11/12 the saints had 5 senior sides in the DDCA and 5 junior teams in the FDCA including a very successful u/12 Rookies. The club continued with our professional player Adam Muirhead this season. Our Ist XI was captained by Paul Dunn with some great results on field especially after x/mas. Thanks to all the other on field leaders ;Lucas Johnson, Matthew Skeggs, Bob Hower and Greg Cole as well as the junior managers Steve Grey/Greg Cole, Justin Balsillie, Geoff Kilner/Blair Hutchinson, John Fuller and the rookies with Eddie Vella. Our thirds made the semi finals this year with the fourths playing off in the GF with all junior sides making the finals. Presentation nights were again a huge success, both held at the Cave. The junior presentation night was a huge success with big numbers at the cave on that Wednesday night. The senior presentation night was again catered for was a celebration of the year. Congratulation to all the trophies for season 2011/12 as well as Adam Murphy and Blair Hutchinson who both won the competition (DDCA) batting awards for their grades. Season 2011/12 for me was a very successful year in that we have introduced a number of new innovations to the club including Back to the Cave which brought the juniors and junior parents and seniors together on the one night for our traditional match day summaries. Some would say “we are building a community here at the cave”. The most challenging role for me was to bring together all the different characters and personalities from the senior members to junior members, to dads of juniors, playing their first year of cricket to the older experienced members who have been at the club for years. I believe the committee built a club this year to cater for all types as well built an atmosphere where every club member and past members are most welcome. I will be back next year to continue the success of the saints on and off the field and I would encourage members (young and old ) to join the committee next year. Go the SAINTS. Noel Smacka Fitzgibbon

Secretary’s Report 2012 This year saw another Cave legend step in and take the reigns. Noel ‘Smacca’ Fitzgibbon has been a fantastic fit and has driven the club by growing sponsorship, building team unity and growing closer ties to the junior club (with Back to the Cave nights). From my point of view this cricket season was relatively smooth one. Because of good weather we managed to play most games and unlike previous years we were able to field full teams for all grades. All teams were well run and that thanks must go to the Captains. We had 2 senior teams make finals this year. An undermanned 3rds led by Matthew Skeggs lost a close fought Semi final and Bob Howers’ 4ths falling at the last hurdle. We are now starting to see our young talent push up into the higher grades. Hats off to Greg ‘Wooosh’ Cole and his foresight to start Milo cricket 10 years ago. With this progression of our young we must be patient as success will not be far behind. Our behaviour both on and off field was very good. Communication is the key and thankyou to Chris Maher and Justin Balsillie for updating our Web page. This year the Cave has a Facebook page. Please be aware that this is open and that others may be able to read what is being posted. This year saw Disco prepare the turf wicket at Bondi and I must say he did a wonderful job. Socially our main day was the $1000 draw. Thankyou to all involved in a great day. As mentioned before I would like to talk more about our ‘Back to the Cave’ nights. These nights saw the junior parents attend in large numbers. It was wonderful to see the coaches and players get up and talk about the feats of the day in front of a packed Cave. On the first night we had all the junior teams win and this was a massive buzz. As a sign of our success Justin Balsillie presented the Chocolates and Bisleri to Ian ‘Bacca’ Baxter. This night will also be remembered as Geoff ‘The Kiln’ Kilner was presented with a ‘Cave Award’ for scoring 100 runs (his first Century ever). It was fitting that a man that does so much for the club was able to share this special moment with so many. Another great night at the Club was Senior Presentation night. Two fine young men were awarded Life Membership, Chris ‘Disco’ Nieuwoudt and Chris ‘Marsi’ Maher both spoke about their thoughts and memories’ of their time at the club. Training We are still lacking with our training facilities, and another year down the track our nets are very tired. The committee (led by Geoff Kilner) is now positioning ourselves to take advantage of some of the funding that is available. Geoff Kilner has drawn up plans and has costed modifications’ to shift the practice nets off the ground. He is also trying to lock in Kingston Council and Cricket Victoria as our partners in this project Big Screen T.V came to the cave this year, thank you to Bill Sheldon for organising this. Dave ‘Neo’ Anderson did a wonderful job of making sure the cave was clean, whilst everyone was tucked in Bed early on Sunday mornings Dave would come down and make the Cave sparkle. Your efforts Dave cannot be under estimated. To Geoff Kilner, the club could not run without your efforts, you are an amazing man, thankyou for everything you do. Thank you to the rest of the committee, a great team to be involved with. To everyone else, come down and join in, Go Saints. Noel Brodie

TREASURER’S REPORT for 2011/2012 In this year’s financial statement I’ve tried to show the total expenditure & receipts rather than just showing the profit as I had done in the past. I believe this is a truer reflection of the actual turn over for the season & should provide a more transparent account of our financial position. This will explain why several items appear to have significantly increased, for example the Bar receipts $26,853.88 less expenses $16,473.25 shows a profit of $10,380.63 which is up $3,330.63 from 2010/11. The same comparisons can be made across the board with the total receipts $61,015.70 less expenses $55,760.18 showing a profit of $5,255.52. You will have seen previously in the financial summary that we have actually made a total cash profit for the season of $7,766.82 so for those who do the maths you will have noticed there is a discrepancy of $2,511.13. Unfortunately I can’t easy explain why this has occurred but as this difference is our favour I haven’t wasted too much time trying to find out why but can only assume it’s due to my amateurish book keeping skills. The other outstanding income which is not included in the profit total is approx $500 yet to be invoiced from the soccer club for the 2011 electricity usage, $290 in unpaid sub’s for 2010-12, unpaid shirt & cap money $150 plus the stock of ball, caps & shirts valued at $3,626.30. With all of these monies considered, we have an effective profit for the season of $12,333.12 which is a turn around & increase of $14,501.83 from 2010/11. Some of this was due to an increase in sponsorship this year up from $3,500 in 2010/11 to $5,200 but mostly this was due to due to great work done by the committee in managing the club & keeping things on track. Significant contributions were made by several people including Bill Sheldon who organized the generous donation of the new TV would have cost the club over $1,000. A special thankyou is also in order for Dave Anderson who spent many hours every week throughout the season cleaning & sorting the club rooms. This has historically been a paid job but Dave took it on this year as his project & as well as doing a fantastic job saved the Cave hundreds of dollars & this effort is much appreciated by everyone. The City of Kingston Community Grant of $1,534.50 provided funds for the purchase of the new cash register & scoreboards so many thanks goes to Noel Brodie for the great work in securing this money. Subscription revenue is again our biggest income & has again slightly increased for last season. This is great to see given that the rates didn’t increase but more players where on the books & out playing cricket which is a good sign for the club going forward. I would also like to thank our sponsors who have again showed great support to the club & through the work of Smacka has secured or increased the contributions made by several of our supporters. Eview Real Estate Partners Peter (Flash) Hope – Buyers Choice Home Loans Kingsley Anthonisz – Lifecare Chiropractic Matt Wornsop – Southbeach Handymen George Berg - Tweed Ultima An additional source of income for use in future seasons will be from a joint account to be set up between the soccer & cricket clubs. The account will be funded initially by the soccer club who will contribute an equal amount toward the value of all the existing assets within the club rooms which are currently owned by us & jointly used. i.e. fridges, pie warmer, cash register, tables, chairs. An asset register is to be created with values to be agreed between the 2 clubs & then this money will be deposited by the soccer club & used for future repairs or replacement costs. Half the cost of the new TV will also be reimbursed to us by the soccer club as a one off payment, again being another income source for next season. As a club I think we should establish a system of auditing or checking the financial documents so that moving into the future we have a fully accountable process in place. I’m not the best organizer but with the right systems in place I’m feel sure everything could be run more smoothly. My thanks go to all the committee & members for your support & patience’s throughout the season. Geoff Kilner - Treasurer 2011/12

ST. BRIGIDS / ST. LOUIS CRICKET CLUB INC. (Founded 1953) SAINTS LIFE MEMBERS ASSOCIATION (Founded 1986) LEGENDS REPORT for 2011/2012 As always, the Saints Life Members Association (Legends) has been actively involved in the social, playing and administration of the club. The Legends organise a few social events throughout the season and here is a brief account of those activities: New Life Members

This season, there are 2 new Life Member inducted by the club, and they are Chris (Marsi) Maher and Chris (Disco) Nieuwoudt. Both stalwarts achieved and earned their life memberships, and both boys came through the club’s juniors and then onto the club senior sides. Marsi progressed his way through the club’s senior teams as a polished wicket-keeper and as an accomplished batsman. Marsi had the travel bug and missed a couple seasons trekking the world, but always came home to the Cave. Marsi has played in Club back-to-back Premierships in 96/97 & 97/98. Marsi has served on Club Committees and is a loyal Saint’s Club man, and a worthy recipient of the Club Life Membership. Disco also progressed through the club’s senior teams, but as a top order batsman who is a constant live-wire in the field by giving everyone plenty of support whether it is the start of play or the last over of the day. Disco played in the club’s Premiership side of 2003/04. Disco has been on the Club Committee and also has assisted Rev in maintain the club’s turf pitch at Bondi over the last few seasons. Disco is a passionate Cave Member and another deserved recipient of the Club Life Membership. SLMA Junior Cricketer Award

The SLMA Award to the Cave Junior Cricketer, who achieves the most success in the senior ranks for the Saints, was awarded this season to Liam Harris, who over the last 2 seasons has improved in leaps and bounds. Liam represented the FDCA in the U/16 carnival over the Xmas period. While in the afternoon, Liam has progressed to be one of the most consistent batsmen of the club’s 1st XI, and in the toughest position in the team of No. 3. Liam showed us his cricketing potential last year in representing the club’s 3rd XI in the semi-finals. He has not disappointed himself, his family, or the Saints in matching that potential with outstanding performances. Congratulations Liam on an excellent cricket season with both the Juniors and the Seniors of the club.

Thursday Night Raffles

The Thursday Night Raffle tradition continued at the Cave. Thanks again to those loyal Cave buyers of the raffles and remember, “The more you drink at the Cave, the more you save”. Once again, a great thanks to Stealth’s continued successful selling of the Cave Thursday Night raffle, and his best efforts twice breaking the $30 profit barrier which is 2 Top 10 profit performances. Another excellent effort by the boys on the Thursday nights, to participate in the traditional raffle, which results in money back to the club.

Rock Day - 1st Sunday in February of each Year

Another top turn-up by members for both sides this year. Peter (Smithy) Smith had beat the drums and the Legends responded. This year there were more Legends than All-Stars and the Legends looked real primed for a big victory in more ways than one, but the heavens opened up, and that was the end of the play on the field. Off field, there was still plenty happening with great stories and great catch-ups. ELGAS was good enough to provide a significant raffle prize of Pizza Oven on the Rock Day, which was successfully won by legend Bobby Kavanagh. Thanks to ELGAS, and I am sure Bobby will take some of those hot Pizzas to Keats. A fun day and again thanks to Smithy in getting the Legends to the ground, and the Man cranking up the BBQ, and Potsy and Geoff assisting the club in organising the refreshments.

Excellent Friday “The Tradition continues ....". An excellent turn-up this year with plenty of past players and supporters at the Cave with plenty of stories to tell and relive. The Man was out on the oval early, thumping stab passes into the chest of young Patty. Dunny and Potsy cranked the mat back into play which was enjoyed by nearly all. Thanks to Bacca tending the Bar and Kerry doing the Master Chief with the food, and the door prize winner was Nev. Thank-you to all those who did attended and remember, it is the day of the Cave, a tradition. FINANCIAL REPORT for 2011/2012 Item Expenditure Receipt Profit 1. Re-unions There was an opportunity to have 4 Premiership Reunion Teams for 2011/12 which are detailed as follows: 1. 10 years – 2001/02 4th XI vs Cranbourne 2. 20 years – 1991/02 2nd XI vs St Johns 3. 25 years – 1986/87 1st XI vs Aspendale 4. 30 years – 1981/82 1st XI vs Cheltenham The Grand-Final score cards are detailed later in this report.

Summary 1. Congratulations to all the Junior sides in making the semi-finals, the 3rd XI also on having a crack in the semis, and a special mention to the 4ths who made the Grand Final and just missed out on the chocolates, but did the Saints proud. 2. Thanks to Smithy in spruiking up Rock Day and Keats for arranging the excellent Raffle Prize, which resulted in a top turn-out, Stealth helping out with the Thursday night raffles, and the master chef Kerry in helping out with the BBQs at Legends functions. 3. Congratulations to Wisey on leading Richmond Cricket Club to the 1st Turf flag in District Cricket this season. Second year in row that a Saints player has played off the Grand Final with James Miller playing for Frankston last year. Plenty of Saints members will be hoping the success of the cricket club will rub off onto the Football Club, but then again, didn’t the Richmond Football Club turf the cricket from Punt Road. Well done Wisey. 4. It is with much sadness that Kerry O’Keeffe passed away last Xmas period. Kerry was a Life Member of the club, who continually gave his time to assist others in the club, whether on-field, training, or off-field with club duties. His wife passed away a number of years ago, and so our thoughts go out to his 3 kids. Kerry was a very respected and admired person within our Club. 4. In doing the Premiership re-unions score cards, the club is still missing plenty of senior score books, so if members could check for stray score-books and returned them to the club, it would be most appreciated. 5. Thank-you to all the Cave members, their families & friends, who supported the Club over the last season. Your commitment and efforts are appreciated. Ian Baxter (Legends Administrator)

FIRST X1 – Season 2011/12

The ones went into the season with a similar makeup to previous seasons with a view to hopefully improve. The fortunes of the side is still very reliant on a select few but its promising to see younger players perform well and notice improvement from a few second tier players.

ROUND 1 Vs Buckley Ridges, Home. Loss

Us: 108 (36 Overs) Dunn 35

Them: 2/109 (35 Overs)

Disappointing start to the season against a side that would eventually finish on the bottom. Enough Said!!

ROUND 2 Vs Fountain Gate, Away. Draw

Them: 8/241 (79 Overs) Heys 4/68 (22)

Us: Washout

A spirited display in the field with Jezza bowling 22 overs on the trot with a wet ball. We rock up next week and the pitch is soaked and unprepared. They whinge and carry on about how we should still bat. Umpires call it off and their captain crack the shits. Wanker!

ROUND 3 Vs Springvale South, Home. Loss

Them: 215 & 5/79 Muirhead 4/71 (26), Macquire 3/26

Us: 144 M.Jamieson 37

We do well to restrict them to 215 with Boods bowling well. In reply we are cruising at 2/80 until Junior gets a howler LBW decision from his old mate Barry Rankin. We then crumble on a day where batting conditions were perfect. More application required with the bat and certainly one that got away.

ROUND 4 Vs St Marys, Away. Draw

Them: 188 (76 Overs) P.Jamieson 3/29 (21), Macquire 2/51, Heys 2/36

Us: 4/90 (26 Overs) Dunn 26, Disco 24, Heys 20*

After losing the toss we bowl brilliantly in ideal batting conditions. Bing gets their gun bat out for a duck and Flea bowls his best spell for the season. All bowlers do their job in a real team effort. The following week we fight hard with the bat in tough conditions before it pisses down. Disappointing because it was a game we deserved to win.

ROUND 5 Vs Lyndale, Away. Loss Us: 7/139 (40 Overs) Muirhead 37, M.Jamieson 33, S.Jamieson 25

Them: 3/140 (35 Overs) Heys 2/44

After winning the toss and batting, Junior gets us off to a good start. We stumble in the middle overs before Boods and Ferret get together for an important 56 run partnership. 140 is a competitive total but not enough against the eventual grand finalists. They don’t panic and cruise to victory. Again not enough runs on the board.

ROUND 6 Vs Southern Pirates, Home. WIN Us: 9/307 (80 Overs) Heys 68, M.Jamieson 65, Harris 35, Brodie 28

Them: 129 (58 Overs) AB 4/40. Muirhead 3/15

Against one of the weaker sides of the comp we get the job done putting an imposing 307 on the board. Jezza & Junior dispatch peg leg and his bunch of misfits to all parts of bondi. Harry, Lochie, Flea and Boods also get amongst the runs. We know they are hopeless and only rain could save them. The following week AB and Boods destroy their top order and have them 7/23. We start thinking about an outright but couldn’t put them away. Very relieved to notch up our first win.

ROUND 7 Vs Cranbourne, Home. Loss Them: 9/210 (40 Overs) Muirhead 2/30, Heys 2/38, P.Jamieson 2/41, S.Jamieson 2/10

Us: 206 (39 Overs) Dunn 64, Heys 30, M.Jamieson 29, S.Jamieson 24

Cranbourne think they are playing and arrive at Bondi 11am sharp for their 2 hour pre game warm-up. Pitch is good and the outfield is fast. We fight hard in the field and restrict them to 210 after they were 2/140 with all bowlers doing a good job. They think the game is over but we know 210 is gettable. A string of steady partnerships involving Potsy, Jezza, Lochie & Ferret see us get into a winnable position but we just fall short. Arguably our best performance of the season but a lack of composure probably cost us. They are no good and it would have been great to beat those cocky bastards.

ROUND 8 Vs Narre Nth, Away. Loss Us: 204 (73 Overs) Harris 76, Heys 40

Them: 6/225 (75 Overs) Heys 3/71 (22)

Win the toss and bat. Are looking really good at 3/130 but don’t rack up a big total like we probably should have. Young Harry holds the innings together with an impressive 76. Jezza fresh from 30 minutes sleep and in a ‘happy’ mood somehow stays awake long enough to get 40. Following week we find it hard to take wickets. Despite Jezza and Boods bowling well they pass us quite easily. One of their bats makes 100 after getting dropped on nought…that was probably the difference. Thanks guys for the birthday cake with cigarettes as candles…idiots!

ROUND 9 Vs Narre Sth, Home. WIN Them: 7/263 (80 Overs) Rory Williams 3/49 (22), Macquire 2/76 (24)

Us: 3/267 (67 Overs) Dunn 81, Harris 55*, M.Jamieson 46, Heys 46*, Disco 23

Another good day for batting at Bondi and after losing the toss knew it was gunna be a tough day in the field. We bowl tightly and give them nothing. Rork on his ones debut bowls line and length and is rewarded with 3/49. Gus does a good job down the other end and are quite happy to restrict them to 263…knowing all we had to do was bat the overs and we win easily. Junior & Disco get us off to the perfect start putting on 76 for the first wicket. Potsy and Harry then put on 104 to put the game beyond doubt. Heys finishes the job. Very pleasing win.

ROUND 10 Vs Silverton, Away. OUTRIGHT WIN!!!!! Them: 112 Macquire 6/33 (16) Muirhead 2/24 (18)

& 136 Macquire 4/64, Muirhead 4/59

Us: 169 Heys 83

& 3/81 M.Jamieson 37, Heys 23*

Win the toss on a big green top and they are somehow surprised that we bowl first. I unleash Gus Macquire with the new pill for the first time and he rips through their top order. With the support of Boods they quickly crumble to be 6/23. We eventually roll them for 112 and ‘stupid’ Macquire takes career best figures of 6/33. After a few nervy moments we pass their score for the loss of 7 wickets. Jezza makes a vital 83 in tough conditions and deserves 100.

They bat again and similar to the first innings we rip through them. Gus takes 10 wickets for the match and boods get another 4. Junior takes five catches behind the stumps and raises his glove to the non-existent crowd. Needing 80 runs for an outright win Junior & Jezza tee off and we do it in 12 overs. 10 Points!!!

ROUND 11 Vs Coomoora, Home. Draw US: 238 (69 Overs) Harris 76, Heys 69, Dunn 32

THEM: 0/21 Washout

Playing the ladder leader we were quietly confident of knocking them off. After losing both openers early, Potsy and Harry consolidate and get to 2/75. We are cruising at 3/190 before the dreaded cave collapse sets in. Harry does another great job making 76 off 55 overs with poor Disco as runner (he was knackered). Jezza again impresses his mates from Coomoora with a classy 69. Again we were in a position where 280 should have been a minimum and didn’t do it. Following week the rain sets in and we are happy to hit the MSC for some refreshments.

So a tally of 3 wins (including an outright), 3 draws & 5 losses finishing 8th of 12. Probably an accurate indication of where we are at. 3 games were lost where we felt we should have won and that’s the difference between playing finals and finishing mid table.

Our batting was solid throughout the season and was reliant on the same few people.

Jezza was again the standout and was the deserving winner of the batting average. Junior was back in form and was very important to have him scoring runs at the top of the order. U/16 Liam Harris did a great job scoring 300 runs for the season. Was thrown in the deep end at number 3 and added some stability by batting overs. Disco was given the job of opening the batting and more often than not frustrated bowling attacks by seeing off the new ball. Ferret, Flea, Boods & Loch all chipped in with a few runs and all contributed in some way.

Whilst we again struggled to take wickets, the bowling was an improvement on the previous season. Boods worked hard and shouldered a heavy workload. Gus continues to improve and was rewarded with a ten wicket match haul and the . Jezza was a handy second change and always takes a few sneaky wickets. George was hit and miss but will be a good bowler when he gets it right. Bowlers who came up from the twos such as AB and Rory were reliable and did their job.

A big thanks to Lurker for his efforts with the scorebook this season. He is the un-official team manager and makes the captains job a lot easier on match day.

Thanks to the committee, all the other captains and everybody who played throughout the season. Potsy Page 29 of 65

SECOND X1 – Season 2011/12 Rd 1 Vs Mordialloc Wash Out Rd 2 Vs Hampton Park @ Bondi (Loss) Us 119 and 0/5 L Johnson 36, L Brodie 21 Them 140 J Barker 5/27, AB 4/33 A good start to the year with a win of the toss and electing to bat first. We didn’t put enough runs on the board which meant a big job for the bowlers. Jimmy Barker and AB stood up to the challenge with exceptional bowling efforts but unfortunately they just got away from us and got across the line. Rd 3 Vs Doveton North @ Power Reserve (Loss) Us 114 L Vanderloo 20 L Johnson 24 and 2/53 N Brodie 21* Them 145 E Bittner 3/34 L Johnson 3/37 Things were looking pretty good at the start when we were 0/37 but with a little collapse we managed to stumble to 114. Once again not enough runs to defend, but a good effort by the bowlers to keep them to 145. An excellent and very unlucky couple of spells by AB (21 overs 1/36) Ev and Leej managed to pick up three wickets each. We had a good chance to get some much needed time in the middle for the batsmen and Nasty made the most of it by setting himself and working hard to get a 21*. Rd 4 Vs Dandenong West @ Bondi (Match abandoned due to weather- Draw) Them 7/252 c.c. AB 4/62 (24 overs) Us 2/58 D Anderson 24* A long day in the field on the first week with Dandy West batting the full 80 overs. Some tireless bowling saw AB collecting 4 wickets, with Rory, Evan and Mick Ardrey taking one each. The weather and the pitch were very dicey the second week but, understandably, with runs on the board, the opposition were very keen to play. Our batsmen started strongly and with DA and Smacka looking very strong at the crease their captain was more than happy to call it quits when the rain came back. Rd 5 Vs Springvale @ Bondi (One dayer due to washout first week) Them 136 E Bittner 3/28 B O’Brien 3/32 M Ardrey 2/11 Us 5/138 (36 Overs) N Brodie 51 D Anderson 42* C Maher 21 With our season looking a little bit dyer this was a must win game as Springvale were on the bottom of the ladder (one spot below us). Once again a good effort by the bowlers managing to bowl them out for under 140. Ev and BOB picked up three each and an excellent spell from the part time bowler Sick Mick saw him pick up 2/11 off his eight overs. With a very reachable target our openers got us off to a great start with with Nasty making 51 and DA carrying the bat and making 42*. A nice little cameo from Marsi helped us across the line for our first win for the year.

Rd 6 Vs Lynbrook @ Bondi (Tie first innings and outright win in the second) Them 95 E Bittner 5/23 N Evan 4/4 and 83 E Bittner 4/33 L Johnson 4/10 A McNeil 2/23 Us 95 N Brodie 19 and 8/88 L Johnson 27 One of the most bizarre games that I have ever played in. Lynbrook were second on the ladder and we were ecstatic to roll them for only 95 with excellent bowling from Ev and Nathan. Overnight we only managed to get ourselves to 6/60 with a quick fire 19 from Nasty. We came back the next week and stumbled towards the line. Mick Ardrey dug in and batted for about 20 overs but unfortunately we fell one run short of the win and secured ourselves a draw. With the umpires and opposition keen to go home we made a decision to give it another crack. Once again some great success with the ball with Ev and Leej taking four wickets each and Antony taking his first wickets for the cave with two. Chasing only 83 and with only 10 players, once again we stumbled toward the line losing early wickets cheaply. With a 27 from Leej along the way it was our Final two batsmen Ev and Antony who held their nerve and saw us across the line for an outright win and a chance at the top four. Rd 7 Vs Cranbourne @ Casey Fields (Loss) Them 7/197c.c. L Johnson 2/30 B. O’Brien 2/40 Us 153 K. Little 47 A. Cole 43 The first game after Christmas was always going to be a challenge for us. We were playing the top of the ladder side and we were very short of numbers. Fortunately we had some cameos from Kris and Bug and as you may be able to tell by the scorecard they came in pretty handy. I think we didn’t bowl too badly and 200 was probably about par on the ground in the conditions. When it came down to we lacked a bit of depth with the bat with only the two cameo players managing to make a decent score. In the end we fell short to a much better side on the day. Rd 8 Vs Narre Nth @ Bondi (win) Them 108 M. Hand 3/10 R. Williams 3/8 L. Johnson 2/22 N.Evans 2/29 Us 173 N. Fitzgibbon 62 L.Ardrey 27 L.Johnson 27 Them again 2/102 M.Hand 2/42 A great first innings performance with some disciplined bowling and the wickets being shared around. Once again we were chasing a small total and with a little bit of a shaky start the Pres started to find his straps and form for the season and didn’t look back. A great 62 with some support from Luke and Leej saw us cruise across the line. We had to have another bowl at them because we finished by tea and when their captain finally got over himself and let us finish we were done by 5. Good day for all and four very valuable points. Rd 9 Vs Narre Sth @ Strathaird Rsve (outright loss) Them 270 N. Evans 4/79 N. Fitzgibbon 3/26 J. Barker 2/48 Us 122 N. Fitzgibbon 46 N Brodie 26 & 121 N Fitzgibbon 36 With a 35 degree day predicted it was always going to be the easy decision of win the toss and bat. That was until we arrived at the ground and there were literally puddles on the pitch because some genius had overwatered it and then rolled the water into it. So I won the toss and had to bowl. Unfortunately for us they saw out the first ten overs well and then continued to bat their way to 270 (a very long day). The following week we showed up, once again a very hot week with no rain, and somehow the pitch was damp again. So Page 32 of 65 with a tricky pitch to bat on Nasty and Smacka really dug in in the first innings but we could only get to 122. So with another crack at batting we didn’t get much better and once again if it weren’t for Smacka digging in it would’ve been embarrassing. A bad loss and no longer a chance at finals. Rd 10 Vs Mordialloc @ Bondi (loss) Us 165 N. Brodie 26 B. Lindsay 28 N.Fitzgibbon 21 N. Evans 25 L. Johnson 29 Them 7/223 M. Hand 6/49 Some good batting performances but with five people getting good starts but no one managing to go on with it to make a large score. We needed this in order to win this game. We knew were probably under par with 165 so our bowling had to be good. Mordy showed some guts with the bat and easily cruised past our total. An excellent bowling effort from Bing who was bowled into the ground with 30 overs but managed to reap the rewards with a gutsy six wicket haul. Rd 11 Vs Hampton Park (outright win) Them (7 players) 113 A. McNeil 3/36 E. Bittner 2/23 Us 284 N. Brodie 115 N. Fitzgibbon 101 C. Maher 26 Them Again 51 M. Hand 4/28 W. Balislle 1/0 (first turf wicket) Playing this game on a Sunday was obviously not ideal for Hampton Park as they only managed to field a team of seven players. They still managed to make a quick 113. Obviously fielding with only seven players isn’t fun and Nasty, living up to the nickname ruthlessly made them pay. A super knock of 115 meant he actually beat Hampton Park’s score off his own bat. Once again the Pres continued his purple patch and notched up a ton of his own to add salt to Hampton Park’s wounds. They had to bat again in the second week and even though more players showed up their skipper took a stand and didn’t let them bat. So an easy second week for the boys with only two wickets to get for outright. Needless to say we were shaking hands and heading home within half an hour. A great way to finish the season. This season was my first as captain and I thoroughly enjoyed taking on the role. Like any team at the Cave there were plenty of highs and lows with some brilliant individual achievements. Thanks to everyone who played in the twos this season especially those who helped out with preparing afternoon teas, putting down covers etc. Congratulations to winners of the bowling and batting averages: Bowling- Evan Bittner @ 15.84 Batting- Noel Fitzgibbon @ 39.5 Also congratulations to all those players, especially the juniors, who made their turf debut. Thanks to all for a great season and let’s hope next year with a bit of consistency we’ll have a crack at the finals. Lucas Johnson 2nd XI Captain

3XI REPORT 2011/12 The thirds had another good season by making the finals for the 2nd year in a row, which was a great achievement given we had only 2 wins before Christmas. Round 1 Vs Cranbourne Us 9/104 (Luke Vanders 43, Rory 16) Them 98 (Skeggsy 2/10, Dutchy Holland 2/25) Good win to start the season. Well set up by the bowlers, we just got over the line. Good performance with the bat by Luke Vanders. Round 2 Vs Berwick Us 9/237 (Nev 79, Bob 62, Luke Ards 37, Dog 19) Them 7/240 (Bob 3/40, Bacca 2/31) We bat very well the first week under stand in skipper Luke Ards. Some big hitting by Nev and well supported by Bob up from the 4ths have us very confident the 2nd week. However we drop a few catches and let them off the hook. Good all round performance by Bob Hower who is up from the 4ths. Disappointing loss a game we should have really won. Round 3 Vs HSD Us 75 (Karl 19*) & 107 (Karl 51 & Bear 18) Them 5/226 (Bacca 3/35) With the usual lack of numbers during the spring carnival, we come up against the eventual premiers and have a very disappointing outright loss. Apart from good batting from Karl in both innings there are not a lot of other positives. We hope to get a few back and show some improvement. Round 4 Vs Narre South Us 257 (Karl 54, Nev 52, Riley 30, Bear 27, Skeggsy 25) Them 7/94 (Dutchy 2/7, Bacca 2/17 (13 overs), Sugar 2/32) Great batting performance with everyone getting amongst it with Karl & Nev being the highlights with some big hitting. We have 18 overs to bowl before stumps with Dutchy (politically correct nickname) bowling a fiery spell we have them 5/42 at stumps. We are obviously very confident of a win the 2nd week however bad weather results in having to take a draw. Round 5 Vs Keysborough Us 4/159 (Murph 63*, Bear 31, Bowl 21) Them 7/154 (Bacca 5/16) With the 1st week being a washout the game reverts to a one day game the 2nd week. They get off to a great start to be 0 for 102. Then Bacca strikes in a great bowling effort and they are all out for 154 (they only have 8 players). Bowl gets off to a good start and is well supported by bear. Murph then comes in and smashes the ball everywhere. A good win considering the start they had.

Round 6 Vs Lyndale Us 189 (Murph 107, Dog 26) & 1/46 Them 8/353 (Skeggsy 3/36) Against our old rival in the last game before Christmas we bat first Murph makes one of the best tons you would want to see in local cricket. Apart from support from Dog the rest of the batting is disappointing. They smash the ball everywhere and make a big score. They then send us in again and we end up 1 for 46. A disappointing loss and plenty of soul searching to do over the Christmas break. Round 7 Vs Doveton Us 2/102 (Bowl 33, Luke Vanders 29, Murph 24*) Them 97 (Dean Vanders 4/46, Bowl 3/2, Sok 2/29) One day game first up from Christmas. We win the toss and bowl with the skipper confident of an improved performance with some old cave boys back in the line up. Great bowling performance has them all out for 97 within 21 overs. We then go about getting the runs as quickly as possible. Great win to start the new year. With Bowl leading the way with a good allround performance. Round 8 Vs Silverton Us 8/172 (Bacca 59*, Nat 52) Them 96 (Dean Vanders 4/17 & Ben Smacca 3/31) We bowl 1st again and the boys again bowl well to have them all out for 96. We then have a cave collapse and are 5 for 62 overnight. Bacca shows his experience and bats very well for 59 with good support from Nat (1st game back in 8 years). Good bowling performance again by Dean with good support from Ben Smacca. Round 9 Vs St Marys Us 2/133 (Luke Vanders 84, Skeggsy 26*) Them 64 (Karl 4/8 & Bowl 3/10) & 43 (Dean Vanders 4/19 & Sok 4/24) Playing the bottom team we need to win outright to make the finals. Great bowling in the heat get them out early. Skeggsy & Luke put on 112 to ensure a 1st innings win. We declare overnight and bowl superbly to have them all out for 43. The perfect win where everything went right. Round 10 Vs Cranbourne Us 216 (Murph 116 & Bacca 32) Them 45 (Dean Vanders 4/8 & Nat 4/19) We get off to a shaky start and are 2 for 6. Murph then comes out and makes a fantastic ton with good support from Bacca. We then have to bowl 7 overs before stumps and Nat takes the new ball and bowls one of the quickest spells seen at the cave to have them 3 for 7 overnight. They really never recover and are all out for 45 in a “controversial” early finish. Great performances by Murph, Dean Vanders & Nat.

Round 11 Vs Berwick Us 5/139 (Murph 37*, Bowl 27, Skeggsy 27) Them 55 (Sok 5/6 & Nat 3/6) On a very hot day out at Berwick we are hoping to win the toss and bat. We however loss the toss against the top team. Right from the start we bowl superbly given the conditions. Sok leads the way with a man of the match performance with 5 for 6. With great support from Nat. We then get off to a good start and are 5 for 139 at stumps. The 2nd week is a washout. A great win leading into the finals.

Semi Final Vs HSD Us 136 (Sugar 28, Luke Vanders 27, Marchy 19, Nat 19) Them 9 for 142 (Will 3/18 (14 overs) & Nat 3/45 (23 overs), Bacca 2/21) We go into the semi final feeling very confident given our form since Christmas however we have 3 of our more important players missing this gives some of our younger players a chance to step up. We bat 1st and are off to a bad start and are 3 for 18. With Sugar and Luke Vanders leading the way with the bat with good support from Marchy and Nat we get to 136. We don’t get off to a good start with the ball with the skipper going down with a knee injury first ball of the innings. They are 0 for 55 overnight and things are looking bleak. However we bowl very well on day 2 with Will leading the way with a superb piece of bowling, Nat bowled very well at the other end with good support from Bacca. However our lack of bowlers it makes it very hard to rotate everyone. They then pass us 9 down. Our boys can be very proud of there efforts to bounce back on day 2. As mentioned at the start of this report it was a great effort to make the finals. We were the best team in the 2nd half of the year in the great. The younger guys in the team (Riley, Sugar & Will) all showed promise and will all be future turf players and I am sure they all learnt a lot during the season especially when we got back some of our more experienced players after Christmas. I would like to thank everyone involved in the team for there effort and support during the season it was a pleasure to play with a good bunch of guys. However I would especially like to single out Bacca, Karl, Murph & Sammy as they were the mainstays of the team during the season.

St BRIGIDS/ST LOUIS 4TH X1 2011/12 SEASON REPORT

After a couple of recent barren seasons the 4ths started the year smelling blood and were keen to string a few wins together. As the season unfolded we picked up a bit of momentum through a bit of stability (or should I say availability) at the selection table and good results bred confidence.

There were some sensational individual performances especially with the bat but overall I think we consistently produced very even team performances with everyone contributing in all areas. Like any Runners up, we were (are!) very disappointed to lose the grand final and it doesn‟t get any better thinking about it but we take some solace out of a lot of positive stuff that occurred throughout the season.

Rd 1 vs Narre Warren. Home. WIN One dayer: Them 6/130 - J.Zeally 2/34 B.Hower 2/23 Us 8/134 - P.Matthews 41* G.Kilner 37 Lost toss. They start steadily but slowly and can never really put the foot down due to some tight fielding and bowling. Young blokes Sammy, T-Mac and Riles impress with Sam pulling off a great run out. Zeals snares their best bat LBW without really appealing. We somewhat cruise towards the target with Kiln in control at 3/85 but then radically try to snatch defeat and slip to 8/113 until big game player (BGP) Paul Matthews gets fed up and smashes us to victory with heaps of overs to spare.

Rd 2 BYE

Rd 3 vs HSD. Home. Loss Us 37 & 112 - J.Fuller 44 J.Zeally 18 Them 9/120 - G.Calvez 3/32 M.Bruce 2/5 P.Matthews 2/30 & 0/38 Lost toss. Get put in and lose quick early wickets, quick mid wickets and quick late wickets. Some opposition giant killer who has never played this low level snaffled 8/6 off 15 (only including same because this bowling analysis is absurd). Opposition lose last 6 wickets for 17 with Frenchy leading the fightback with 3 quick wickets. We have another hit and Johnny “Fuller beans” bats beautifully but unfortunately only Zeals and Geoff can offer any support. Not enough runs results in an outright loss. Forget about it.

Rd 4 vs Doveton North. Away. Draw Us 6/293 – G.Kilner 112 B.Hutchinson 99* G.Burke 22 Won toss. A lazy 6 changes to the team including the captain and the introduction of Hutchy. We are 5-92 when Hutch joins Starsky Kilner … a record-breaking 185 run partnership later before Kiln (almost carried his bat) is dismissed in the 70th over for a magnificent and chanceless 112. With 5 balls remaining debutant Hutch is on 89 then goes 6 dot 4 so 2 balls remaining and on 99. With a century now very very short odds he smashes the 5th ball to some bloke at short mid-wicket who can‟t field and doesn‟t see the ball but accidently fields it cleanly. Last ball is a legside pie and also the first ball Hutch has missed for the innings and he ends up stranded on 99 not out. It too was a magnificent innings and he deserved a century. Following week is wet and they don‟t want to play. We spend nearly 2 hours getting the wicket and surrounding area playable using everything but a helicopter (Kiln and Johnny even go to get a yard of sand) when the League come out to the ground and leave it up to the captains. They don‟t want to play and yet these pretenders are somehow on top of ladder ….. sooooooooft !!! We can‟t wait to play them again.

Rd 5 vs Narre North. Away. WIN One dayer: Us 7/149 – G.Kilner 29 B.Hower 28* B.Hutchinson 20 Them Allout 56 off 35 overs – B.Hower 3/2 (7) T.McCarthy 3/14 (8) G.Calvez 2/11 (8) Lost toss. We have a hit and post a decent score on a big ground. Dave Gillard makes his debut and whilst batting innocuously rips his achilles tendon from the bone, it twas a short season for Dave. We all click with our bowling and totally dominate with T-Mac bowling a particularly devastating spell. They can‟t recover and we have a crushing victory.

Rd 6 vs Cranbourne, Home. WIN Us 290 – B.Hower 57 J.Fuller 43 G.Burke 39 R.Love-Linay 33 Them 94 – J.Fuller 4/12 M.Orfanellis 3/12 (11) & 7/50 - B.Hower 3/13 (9) R.Love-Linay 2/1 T.McCarthy 2/5 Lost toss. We get put in again … don‟t these #%*@ know what they are dealing with ! Maybe they do and we find ourselves in the familiar position of 6/117 with heaps of overs left before the tail wags for a few good partnerships and we bat our overs. Our score enables us to attack and when they try to force the runs they collapse against tight bowling. Johnny bamboozles them with his rock-star personality complimented by his irresistible leggies as they lose their last 7 wickets for 32. We have 24 overs left so have another crack at „em and push hard to give it a real shake. No outright but very close and a tremendous team performance by all.

Rd 7 vs Coomoora. Away. WIN One dayer: Them 6/137 – B.Hower 3/25 P.Matthews 2/26 Us – 2/145 G.Kilner 82* B.Hutchinson 42* Lost toss. Playing on a postage stamp we contain them to a very gettable score with an excellent display of fielding. We have a shaky moment early with the bat before the big fellas show us how to construct an innings. Kiln unleashes his lothario-like forearms in a brilliant unbeaten innings and swoons us to victory in good time well supported by the Hutch. Johnny fires them up with some colourful umpiring.

Rd 8 vs Berwick Springs. Home. WIN (reverse outright) Them 201 – J.Zeally 4/16 B.Hower 2/29 K.Waters 2/33 & 132 - K.Waters 4/35 B.Hower 3/37 T.McCarthy 2/25 Us 146 – P.Matthews 43 G.Kilner 43 & 2/189 off 23 overs – Y.Malioris 119 G.Kilner 49* Lost toss again. They surprise us and after they get off to a flyer, we take regular wickets and peg them back to 200 with Zeals wrapping up the innings by clean bowling 4 of the last 5 wickets with his “delicious” bowling. We go from 1-72 to 7-89 before stumps are drawn on day 1 and we are battling to stay in the game with only Kiln showing some application and batting well again. Day 2 and BGP Matthews and Muddy Waters dig in under pressure and very bat sensibly to steer us past the follow on target with a 50 run partnership. In their 2nd innings Zeals gets us going again with a screaming one hander at point and then we take the last 9 wickets for 40 odd runs with Muddy getting dirty and bowling a treat. We are left with the equation of nearly 190 runs off 30 overs, nothing to lose and the Cave crowd is building. Enter the big bustling bombastic baby-faced “bring it” bear ! After getting off the mark with a six, our very own greek right-handed Gilchrist-lookalike proceeded to totally tear apart the opposition and smashed another 8 magnificent sixes to all parts of the ground to leave them looking like a homeless half-eaten souvlaki. It was a truly memorable performance and one that thoroughly entertained the Cave crowd. It was especially special given the context of where we were in the match and enabled us to snag a rare reverse outright with 7 overs to spare. Up the other end, Kiln does another unassuming job for us and quietly crafts out a smooth 49* in Cyclone Yarni‟s shadow. Definitely a season highlight.

Rd 9 vs Narre Warren. Home. WIN Us 8/285 – B.Hutchinson 105* K.Waters 71 W.Basillie 36* Them 88 – P.Matthews 2/9 (11) B.Hower 2/4 (6) J.Fuller 2/34 Won toss (finally!). We have a hit but again find ourselves in trouble until Hutch finds allies in young future stars Muddy and Wilbur. They bat intelligently and swing the momentum by compiling game- changing partnerships totalling 200 runs. A terrific century from Hutchy full of classic cricket shots and an innings where the young fellas batting with him would have gleaned a lot. Rocket Rod provides some mirth by somehow attempting to impale himself on his stumps. Narre struggle with the bat and are never in it seemingly concentrating on avoiding an outright defeat. Another nice tight team performance in the field with the young old blokes keeping up with the younger blokes.

Rd 10 vs Sandown Park. Away. Lose Us 144 – Y.Malioris 35 B.Hutchinson 34 Them 208 – B.Hower 3/37 (24) B.Hutchinson 2/31 Won toss. Ventured out to Columbo to play undefeated top-side. Early in our innings we knuckled down and batted pretty well against easily the best bowling outfit we faced all year. Unfortunately we didn‟t reward our early hard work and lost 5/5 at the end, probably should‟ve posted 200. When they were 2/25 we were right in it but one bloke tons up for them and carries them past us 6 wickets down. The skipper bowls 24 economical overs until he runs out of shoulder cartilage, voltaren and sledging material and the Hutch man presents his allrounder‟s case. In conclusion more runs would‟ve been interesting, we have no fears and hope to get another crack at them.

Rd 11 vs Buckley Ridges. Home. Draw Us 200 – B.Hutchinson 66 B.Hower 59 R.Love-Linay 25 Them – 0/2 Won toss. Without really firing we graft it out to post 200 at the Cave which isn‟t too bad considering we have 5 ducks and only really 2 decent partnerships. Blair wraps the league batting average. Tyler Brodie debuts in between some technicolor yawns. Following week is early March so of course we are washed out. Finals next week.

Semi Final vs Doveton North. Home. WIN Them 139 – B.Hower 3/24 (23) P.Matthews 2/21 (23) T.McCarthy 2/32 G.Calvez 2/35 Us 4/151 – G.Cole 101* Lost toss. Home final at the Cave and after the clash earlier this season, we‟d been waiting for this so were pretty toey. Terrific bowling and fielding performance allowed us to really tighten the screws and not allow them to get any momentum with BGP Matthews and Bob bowling particularly dry. Games have rules for a reason, if you intentionally don‟t abide by them there are penalties. Such as being dismissed for obstruction. Whilst not a big total to chase, batting the next day we still had to get the runs. After a little wobble early in our innings, Woosh imposed himself and took total control showing his experience, patience and great shot selection. The pressure he and Petty absorbed before counter-attacking was match-winning and resulted in a dominant 86 run partnership. Woosh‟s clean hitting was a delight for the big crowd and took the game away for a comfortable victory. Due to a mathematical error he had to celebrate his century twice, it was such a glorious innings it deserved two celebrations.

Grand Final vs Sandown Park. Away. Lost Us 58 - G.Kilner 16 & 67 – J.Fuller, A.Pettinella & J.Zeally 13 Them 73 – P.Matthews 6/24 (15) B.Hower 3/30 & 5/59 – T.McCarthy 2/8 G.Calvez 2/24 Won toss. Back to Columbo but we have the Cave army who renewed their visas and eskys for the trip. Batting first we went from 2/40 and absorbing the overs to then losing our third LBW wicket. No- one can really get in and we end up losing 8/18 and are rolled cheaply. With not much to defend our only chance is to go hard but they scramble past us just before stumps on day 1. Next day we hit back hard and wrap them up very quickly to put us back in the game. BGP Matthews justifies his new initials by bowling brilliantly ripping through the opposition. Our 2nd innings and again a couple of early wickets puts us in trouble. Despite some fighting efforts we can‟t recover sufficiently and again post a low target. We don‟t give up and almost have a sniff until our lack of runs catches up with us. 7 LBWs to 2 don‟t help. A proud effort but unfortunately no cigar.

In summary we were able to introduce a lot of new players to the club, get some development into the young fellas and also able to create a really great atmosphere within the team. The camaraderie, humor and vibe (read marbo) ensured we kept our perspective and this positivity I‟m sure went a long way to contributing to the winning results we achieved.

If we didn‟t know it already, the spirit, pride and unison of the club became evident to us during our finals campaign and the support we received from every single person involved at the club was very heartening and deeply appreciated. The support and assistance I received throughout the year, on and off field was wonderful. Even the late night “tactical discussions” with all club members (inclusive of dim sims) were worth the next morning‟s headache.

Finally I would also like to thank our unofficial sponsors Voltaren, Goanna oil, Deep Heat and the Aspendale Salt Baths (beach) for keeping us on the field and delaying the pain until Sunday. And I would like to single out Jamie Zeally and thank her for her incredible afternoon tea spreads, some of the boys had never eaten so well … and may never again. Thanks to everyone involved for a very enjoyable season and I look forward to next season. Bob

St Brigids St Louis CC 2011/12 5th xi report The 5th xi has been an introduction to senior cricket for many players over the last couple of years and we saw some very big steps taken by many 2nd year players this season. I expect to see these names popping up in the highlights of the higher grades throughout the next few years. Last season we really struggled to bat all our overs and because of this we were unable to win a game. However we were all learning the application and techniques required to bat all day. The result is that we have been able to bat all day several times this season and with that comes wins, which we did have. Our young bowling side demonstrated great consistency and skill which enabled us to put pressure on most batting sides, sometimes for extended periods and sometimes for short spells. As these bowlers gain experience these periods will increase in length and eventually prove to be very successful. These improvements have come because the inexperienced players are given the opportunity to ply their trade and learn. There is no substitute for time in the middle – batting, bowling and fielding. I encourage other captains to give the less experienced players opportunities at crucial times and put them under pressure – you will be amazed at how quickly they improve and how often they surprise you. We used 25 players this season, and did not forfeit one game, even during the spring carnival. With so many of the players being very young we look forward to a few years of strong numbers and maybe a 6th xi at some stage. We won one game by forfeit (they were scared), 2 games were drawn and we won 2 games. Though finishing 9th on the ladder the competition was very close and we were only 2 games from 4th spot. Game 1 V Berwick Springs at Home – One day game Sent in to bat Us 7/93 (36 overs) Wooosh 35, Mac Palmer 11*, JB 8, Keano 6, Morgan 2* Them 8/102 (36 overs) Frenchman 2/8 off 5, Blinky 3/17 off 5, Keano 1/9 off 5 and Boof 1/26 off 8. Also Foxy bowled 8 overs for 23 runs and Mac 5 overs for 16 runs. Zac Calvez 2 catches Great effort – just missed the chocolates. Highlights, Mac in the field came of age. Blinky gets a bag. Foxy, JB, Mac, Keano and Morgan all bat long periods. Game 2 V Narre North Win by Forfeit – we did name 11 players Game 3 V Hallam Kalora Park away Day one washed out, One day game day 2 – Have to change the teams as Blinky has a heart attack during the week. They bat first and make 6/200 – Rod Love Linay 2/43, Matt Moloney 2/32 Kane 1/25, foxy 1/38 boof 2 catches, foxy one catch Us All out 75 Kane 26, Wooosh 17* Highlight – Kane’s senior debut – very impressive. WE are beaten by a much better side – no disgrace for us. Game 4 V Berwick 2 day home game Lose the toss and bowl – Them 8/202. Keano 2/38 off 16, Wooosh 2/28 off 10, Kai 1/13, Rod 1/26, Ryde 1/27 Boof one stumping and a catch. 2 catches to Mac and one to JBalls. 3 Love Linays in the team, Kai bowls a treat. Boof keeps well. Us 5/80 of 39 – Foxy 20 off 35 overs great batting. Rod 31 not out steadies the ship. Boof and Matt bat a few overs and frustrate the bowlers Washed out – 3 points Good effort Game 5 Away v Lynbrook - Day one washed out again so another one day game Lynbrook win toss and Bat on a big slow ground. 5/148 Matt Moloney 2/13 outstanding, Mac 1/17, Kai 1/22, Blinky gets 1/35 after returning from heart attack – lost a bit of his mojo though. Keano 6 overs for 13 great opening spell. New man in the team Shiel Zee 2 overs for 7 runs plus 2 blinder catches – a great addition to the team. Boof another stumping and Mac get 2 catches. Us 4/151 of 36 overs – pass them with 2 balls to spare Mac opens batting only gets 1 run but bats a long time and sees off the openers 39 run opening stand – great effort. Rod bats a few overs for not many but doing the job 38 run stand, Kai gets 2 in a 20 run partnership, Matt Moloney sensational 9 runs under pressure, Then in comes Boof – Pushing singles and very alert and game savvy Page 41 of 65 not out 11 – hits the winning runs. A great team effort to chase down a good total. Wooosh 108* WIN – Our first for 1 and a half years. Game 6 Home to Berwick for a 2 day game win toss and bat Us all out 172 61.1 overs Boofa 37 not out, Shiel Zee 10, Tyler 14, Morgan 10, Mac opens again – well done. Damien bats well then gives his wicket away. Them 5/226 off 50 overs – We just let them get away a bit and loose our way. Keano 2 wickets, one each to Matt, Tyler and Wooosh. Kai bowls 3 overs for 4 runs and really looks a prospect. Blinky finds his range but can’t jag a wicket. Shiel Zee bowls well again. Catches to Matt, Kai, Damien, Mac and Shiel Zee. Game 7 away to Narre South One dayer – Lose toss and bowl Them 7/314 – We got smashed on a tennis ball bounce wicket that they used to their advantage. Tristan H took 2 wickets plus one to Morgan and Matt and Rod and Kai. Mark Bruce had the ball follow him everywhere; welcome to the fifths Brucey your enthusiasm was infectious. Us 4/159 Damo gets 32, Rod retires on 56, Kai makes 42 not out and starting to look a real cricketer. In the end 159 not a bad score but only half way there!!! Game 8 Home to Dandy West win toss bat. Us 68 with only one player in double figures we have our worst batting effort for the year. Razor makes a comeback and fills the opening spot seeing off a few overs. Them 5/96dec Bergs and Sam open the bowling and bowl well to some very attacking batsmen, one wicket each. Boofer also gets a wicket. Bergs and Danny G get 2 run outs both involving their idiot captain (karma). Us 74 off 58 New player Danny Glover chips in with a hard fought 35 and though no one else gets runs the resistance is terrific and we put up a good fight against the top side. Them 0/50 off 5 We bowl the non bowlers and they have a big swing and we are done early. The score does not look good but the effort in second dig very encouraging and the bowling uncovered a gem in Bergs. Nasty incident involving one of their players threatening violence and their captain doing nothing about it – very bad for cricket. Later in the season the same player gets suspended for fighting in a semi final, I should have reported him myself. They are not a nice bunch of blokes and if I never see them again – Terrific. Game 9 home to Parkfield 2 day game win toss bat. Us 247 in 68 overs. Razor opens again and gives stability with 12 runs in many overs. Kai bats really well for his 10 in the top order. Gerard Burke chips in for 21 and Sam Moloney gets a big 25. Shiel zee and Blinky both get 7 batting out many overs at the end which is terrific. Blinky turning into a batsman. During all of this, new boy Danny Glover is our lethal weapon – he gets 131 not out well done. WE have set them a target so we are a chance. Them 5/289 Nick bowls 13 overs at the top and gets 3 wickets. Sam also gets one wicket in a great opening spell. Danny tells me he can bowl spin and seam up – so I ask him to tweek, he gets smashed. Blinky thinks he’s a batsman and bowls like one – 52 off 3 overs. Kai bowls well without getting a pole and Razor proves he is not a bowler. We put up a good effort and the fruits of our hard work over the last couple of years are paying off. Game 10 Away V Berwick Springs Win toss Bat. Us 7/287 Lose Mac early then in steps Kai with a fantastic 31 runs in an 88 run partnership – we have a player here. Danny bats very well for 39 and I thought he would bat all day 124 run partnership. Boof gets 11 runs in a long innings in which his only aim was to prevent Johnny Fuller from batting. Jaarny gets 9. Bergs applies himself for 16 runs which is a real step up. Blinky once again shows real improvement in both skill and endeavour and is not out after batting several overs. JBalls also not out at the end. Batted all day mission - accomplished. Also Wooosh 129. Them 168 We use nine bowlers the openers Bergs gets 2 wickets early and Mac gets 3 and we have them on the ropes. Kai gets 2 wickets with his tweekers and Danny gets one wicket.3 catches to Boof and one each to Danny, Shiel zee and Wooosh. Another win - you beauty. The best thing is we have done it as a team and look like cricketers. Game 11 V Narre North 2 day game lose toss bowl Them 280 in 65 overs. Mac Palmer 3/43, Keano 2/25, one each to Matt, Kai, Sam, Danny, Froggy and Bergs.2 catches to Wooosh and Danny, one each for Kai, Mac and Froggy. Us 3/89 We lose both Wooosh and Danny before stumps, which is a worry but JB and Mac hold the fort overnight and continue on. JB fights on into the new day and uses up some overs. Narre North is enthusiastic about their chances but the rain clouds are coming. Mac and Kai bat on in uncomfortable conditions as it is now drizzling, but not getting heavier. The match is finally abandoned after 31 overs. Mac 31* and Kai 29* Page 42 of 65

The Players Listed in order of number of games played Pat Keane (Keano) opened the bowling all season and always puts it on the spot. Always seem up and lets it go from a good height and moves it away from the bat. Unfortunately we will see him promoted up the grades next year. Bill Sheldon (Blinky) Started the season with a heart attack, came back from the dead and was playing 4 weeks later. Still working hard on his leggies and was one of the learners under Higgsy during the season. Bill’s batting has improved out of site and now has the ability to hold up an end and score runs. Finished the year off strongly. Justin Balsillie (JB or J Balls) Can’t bowl to save himself. However his fielding is now excellent and his enthusiasm and drive are infectious. Highlight is his batting improvement which has come from hard work and I am looking forward to seeing JB get a 50 next year. Kai Love Linay We have uncovered a huge talent with Kai. I have no doubt he will play many years in our first xi. Very correct batsmen with an array of strokes plus a very good leg spin bowler. Straight into the 2’s next season. Ben Lawrence (Boof, Boofa) Boof was the vice captain this season and is a very talented cricketer with a sharp cricket sense. Top middle order bat, seam bowler and talented wicket keeper. I could have promoted him early in the season but wanted him to develop his skills as an integral part of the team and also to build on his leadership qualities. Boof played the last game in the 2s and will probably not be dropped for round one next season. Thank you for your help all year Boof. Matt Moloney Still an under 12 but a seriously good cricketer. Bowls tightly with good movement in the air and off the seam and a great bat and fielder. He will be an integral part of the team next year. Morgan Sheldon (Morgs) Morgan is a great bowler and batsman who didn’t really get much of a go this year but when he did showed us what he has got. Will be a big contributor to the team next year. Mackenzie Palmer (Mac) Great seam bowler – Will open the bowling for the ones one day soon. A wristy batsman capable of holding down an end or scoring quickly. This year was a breakout year for him in the field and he took some great catches. Terry Shiells (Shiel Zee) Terry came to us via the 4ths this year and instantly added to the team – enthusiasm and hustle in the field, a go to bowler for line and length and a quick wicket. Batting....will get better. Rod Love Linay Rod is a great bowler and batsman whose contributions have been outstanding. Not only with bat and ball but his positive attitude and encouragement, always great to have in the side. Nick Bergman (Bergs) Bergs worked hard on focus and control and through hard work and weight of results became our opening bowler. Moves the ball into the right handers with great effect. Showed huge improvement in his batting which was a direct result of his improved attitude – very proud of you Bergs. Scott Glover (Danny, Lethal Weapon) Danny started the season after Xmas and filled a gap in experience in the team. Danny picked up a ton for himself and took a few wickets. His words of wisdom and unflappable nature were great to have around the team. This contributed to better results on the scoreboard and provided a greater learning experience for the younger guys in the team. Note – if you ever bat with Danny, don’t go for the punching gloves because he says “I don’t do that shit” (old school, I like it) Thanks for joining us Danny. Sam Moloney A very talented young cricket both with bat and ball. It is great to watch him bowl three overs of outswing to a batsman pitching just outside off, then he throws in the off cutter pitched on the same spot that hits off bail. Sam is in the queue to play in our first xi. Ryde Love Linay Ryde is a talented and enthusiastic player with bat and ball who I hope will play a lot of games with us next season. Tyler Brodie (Tie) Tyler showed us he can play great cricket with his limited opportunities. Another player I am looking forward to having in the team next year. James Vanminnen (Foxy) Foxy is a super player who is capable of taking wickets and scoring quick runs, without being too risky. Unfortunately he played most of the season with his old man at Highett West; tell him to play at the cave. Mark Bruce (Brucey) Brucey – Dropped from the 4ths, can’t bat can’t bowl. But the most enthusiastic fielder I have ever seen. He did his hamstring before he could improve on the two minor deficiencies in his game. Only joking Brucey – Come back next year and have a crack. Nathan Direen (Razor) Razor made a comeback late in the season and showed us he still has the batting skills and gave us some strength at the top of the order. He tried to tell me he can’t bowl, once I gave him an over – I agreed. Gael Calvez (Froggy, Frenchman) The Frenchy is a super outswing bowler. Also capable of taking blinder outfield catches and dropping the sodas. Damien Harris (Damo) Filled in a couple of times and showed he can play. Very intense player but with a good sense of humour. Looking forward to seeing his best once Tristan is in the team. Tristan Harris (the better Harris) only under 12s but keen as mustard to start playing senior cricket. He is a great batsman and bowler. Only a matter of time before he joins his brother in the ones. John Fuller (Jaarny, Jaarn) Loves his cricket – tells me he is a good bat and a good spin bowler – I didn’t see it. Kane Waters (Toad, Muddy and many more about red) Only played the one game – his inswing bowling with good bounce and pace was impressive. Promoted straight into the 3rds and never to be seen in our grade again. Another player in the queue to the firsts. Dan Moloney (Councillor) Dan gets through another season without a run. Next year Dan. Greg Cole (Wooosh) He’s just an old hack who knows if you take on the captaincy you won’t get dropped. Thanks to all who participated this year. We have had a couple of wins and seen some future champions have their first taste of senior cricket. WOOOSH

St Brigids St Louis CC 2011/12 Under 16 report For all aspects except the finals our season was a resounding success. Unfortunately for many it will be remembered as the year we let a premiership slip out of our grasp. However over time we will appreciate the giant steps that these players have made over the last few years. Many members of this team have been together now for 7 years as Junior players at the Cave and all have indicated that they will be playing on again next year. This Team has developed so much depth as a result of giving all players a go all of the time. Each of the players demonstrated their skills and experience by playing significant roles in senior teams including the firsts and the seconds. Due to poor weather, we missed out on the opportunity to play against Dingley who ended up on top of the ladder. We only lost one game through the season and finished second. We lost the semi final in a very tight game in which one of the opposition batsmen put our bowlers to the sword while we only had 10 players in the field. Apart from that we had it all over them. I hope we learn from that and use the lessons to generate a significant win for the club in the future. I am very proud of each and every one of the boys. If the club can maintain their love of the game and the club, this group will play a significant role in several Turf premierships over the next dozen years. The leaders for the season were Lochie Brodie, Liam Harris, Kyle Gray and James Barker. These boys all took the helm for a couple of games and developed their leadership skills. Liam was rewarded with the Captaincy for the finals. Over the winter break Reilly Sheldon and Will Balsillie worked with the Tiger talent squad. Both of them improved significantly over the winter and I hope more players take advantage of our new relationship with Richmond. Riley copped a bit of ribbing over his decision to train with the Tiger talent squad but we all had to eat our words as we observed is improvement. Well done Reilly on believing in yourself and taking positive steps to get better. We only had 10 under 16 players this year and relied on the under 14 team to provide players when available to fill in. This meant that they were usually playing 2 junior games and a senior game each weekend – thank you for your contribution to the under 16 team. Each of these boys played significant roles for us when they played and the future looks bright for them. THE PLAYERS Lochie Brodie. We have not seen the best of Lochie yet. He is the most technically correct bat in the team and is developing his patience and shot selection. Lochie is an impressive keeper and can also bowl. Lochie was Captain of the Federal representative team this season – well done. 240 runs at 40 and highest score 67. A regular first xi player with a big future. Liam Harris. Batted with great consistency both in the 16s and first eleven. Runs and wickets. If Liam stays at the Cave he will be a cave legend one day. 277 runs at 55.4 high score 68* and 9 wickets at 12.8 Ben O’Brien. A prolific run scorer who didn’t quite get going until the semi final in which game he notched up his first 50 for the season. Ben’s spin bowling skills did not produce the wickets this year but he will take plenty more wickets over the years. A regular player in the 2nd xi. Averaged 26 with the bat and a high score of 50* in the semi. Riley Sheldon. In only his first year of under 16s Riley is a hard hitting batsman that can also show resilience against good bowling. Riley’s challenge is to learn how to control the aggression when appropriate. This will come with experience and hard work – which we know he will put in. Riley’s spin bowling is also

Page 47 of 65 developing very well and we look forward to him developing this side of his game. 178 runs at 22 high score 59* and 5 wickets at 24. Kane Waters. Also in his first year of 16s. Kane is the go to man for big hitting – but has developed his defence and patience. Kane did not have to use his defence so much this year as he always seemed to come in when quick runs were required, however batting in the seniors he demonstrated that he can bat for significant periods of time and had the senior players talking. Kane is also a genuinely good left arm inswing bowler and was a significant wicket taker both in juniors and seniors. 133 runs at 17 and 11 wickets at 10.4. James Barker. Genuinely quick bowler with a huge future. James is able to put fear into batsmen with both his pace and movement. Made his debut in the first xi this season and looks to be a player for the future. James is a bit hit and miss with the bat but when he hits them --- wow. Highest score of 25* and 8 wickets at 13.3 Kyle Gray. Kyle’s batting is a delight to watch. He only went out once this year and that was when he was going for quick runs in the last over of an innings. Played for St Kilda premier cricket this year and earned a spot in the 3rds semi final team. Kyle’s leg spin has had players in all sorts of trouble this year and he has helped bundle a few sides out. 411 runs at an average of 411 and 14 wickets at 9.6 Patrick Keane. Keano is the go to man with the new ball. Always puts the ball right on the spot, lets it go from a great height and keeps the seam up. Very very economical bowler – he bowled 32 overs for only 68 runs and took 4 wickets at 17. A well loved player in our senior teams and will become a cave legend in time. Tom McCarthy. A handy batsman who will continue to improve. Tom has hit his straps this year as a bowler and is showing us what he has got. Tom was a significant part of the 4th xi Grand final attack and I can’t wait to see his senior career develop. Took 7 wickets at 16.1 Kai Love Linay. Kai is a very talented batsman who has developed strongly throughout the season. I am confident that kai will play a lot of cricket in the first xi. He is also a talented spin bowler. Kai had a top score of 18 and took 4 wickets. Ben Lawrence. Though an under 14 Ben was always looking for a game in the 16’s and had many opportunities this season. Ben’s highest score was 19 and he bowled very well. Expect to see his name in the highlights of the under 16s next year. Will Balsillie. Will is a future champion bowler from the under 14s who will scare the hell out of the competition next year. Will made his turf debut this year and was very impressive. Dam Moloney. Another super player form the under 14s. A talented batsman and bowler. Played lots of senior cricket this season and i expect a turf debut soon if he continues to improve ad work hard. Tyler Brodie. An eager player from the 14s who is developing well. Still another year in the 14’s but expect him to be a significant player in the 5th xi next season. Mackenzie Palmer. One of the under 14s to help out. Mac has found his feet as a cricketer this season. A capable bat and a real genuine opening bowler. Tom Lamb. Played one game and got 30 runs and one wicket. Conor Brown. Conor helped out for one game to fill in for us. Great to see him on the field for the saints again. He bowled 6 good overs for only 12 runs but could not quite get a wicket. Thank you to Steve Gray for managing the team this year and for the past 7 years. Your assistance has been invaluable. There was so much parental support for this team, which is a pleasure to observe. We consistently had several parents at the games to watch and help when required. Special thanks to Damien Harris, Noel Brodie, Bill Sheldon and Rod Love Linay for scoring and all the little things that got done. Page 48 of 65

U14 Team Report - Season 2011/12

As always, the u14 Team is made up of an age range that includes boys that are transitioning into being men. The variety of physical development, combined with a variety of cricket experience is a challenge for each of the team members to recognise how they and each of their team mates contribute to team success. Our season was successful. Every player understood that their contribution was vital to team success. I look forward to seeing the bottom age players – Jack Batten, Tyler Brodie, Campbell Pickett, Kasey Sheldon and Morgan Sheldon – showing their leadership capacity in the u14 team next season.

We were very competitive in the semi-final against eventual premiers Cheltenham. Our cricket ability was strong enough to cause emotional distress to the Cheltenham Cricket Team Manager / Coach. Our players should be proud of the maturity they showed, in both their cricket skills and personal conduct.

Player contributions to the club were as follows:

WM Balsillie Total Seasons 5, Total Matches 83 Season Total Matches - 21, Turf 5 – 1, B Grade – 7, E Grade – 1, u16 – 2, u14 – 9 Will developed his leadership skills and ability to motivate players of varying ability. Injury prevented Will from bowling at times during the season. Will‟s ability with the bat improved throughout the season. J Batten Total Seasons 3, Total Matches 29 Season Total Matches - 9, u14 – 9 Jack took to the challenge of playing u14 cricket with a level of enthusiasm and determination that inspired his team mates. Jack‟s eventual success, particularly with bowling, demonstrates what can be achieved through persistence. T Brodie Total Seasons 5, Total Matches 79 Season Total Matches - 16, E Grade – 1, F Grade – 3, u16 – 2, u14 – 10 Tyler‟s contribution, particularly with the bat, was most valuable this season. At times, Tyler demonstrated that he has the capacity to put together match-winning innings. R Francis Total Seasons 3, Total Matches 32 Season Total Matches - 8, u14 – 8 Ryan has a good level of fitness that ensures that he is able to take on any role required. This season, Ryan built upon a very wide variety of skills, including batting, bowling, fielding and keeping. CM Gardiner Total Seasons 1, Total Matches 6 Season Total Matches - 6, u14 – 6 Caleb‟s commitment and enjoyment of the game lead to some early success in his first season of cricket. Caleb will benefit from the experience gained. I hope that Caleb will challenge himself to play senior cricket in addition to u16 cricket next season. BM Lawrence Total Seasons 6, Total Matches 102 Season Total Matches - 22, Turf 5 – 1, F Grade – 7, u16 – 5, u14 – 9 Ben built further upon his ability to wicket keep, a role he played in both junior and senior cricket. His energy and dialogue were most valuable, especially in keeping all team mates engaged in the game. During the season, Ben gained confidence in his ability with the bat. This was evidenced with two half-centuries. R Love-Linay Total Seasons 4, Total Matches 50 Season Total Matches - 11, F Grade – 3, u14 – 8 Ryde returned to cricket this season, after having a season off. His enthusiasm lead to moments of success. He is developing as a bowler and is very reliable in the field. He has taken the opportunity to add to his cricket experience through playing senior cricket this year. This experience will be of great benefit next season and beyond.

S Moloney Total Seasons 3, Total Matches 72 Season Total Matches - 20, B Grade – 1, E Grade – 4, F Grade – 3, u16 – 3, u14 – 9 Sam took a very thoughtful approach to his cricket this year, and added a very balanced a level-headed approach to the leadership group. His determination to achieve team success sometimes meant that he had to make some selfless decisions, for which I admire his maturity. His cricket skills continued to build during the season. MJ Palmer Total Seasons 2, Total Matches 35 Season Total Matches - 16, F Grade – 6, u16 – 2, u14 – 8 In his second season, Mackenzie showed that he has great potential as a cricketer. His running between wickets was a stand-out. His application to the task of both batting and bowling was very good. I‟m looking forward to Mackenzie continuing to push himself in the u16s and seniors next season. C Pickett Total Seasons 1, Total Matches 9 Season Total Matches - 9, u14 – 9 Campbell showed some very good fielding and bowling skills in his first season of cricket. Campbell will develop considerably as a cricketer as he gains cricket experience next season. K Sheldon Total Seasons 4, Total Matches 45 Season Total Matches - 10, u14 – 10 As a newcomer to u14 cricket, Kasey was positive and composed when batting or bowling. His skill level improved greatly throughout the season. M Sheldon Total Seasons 5, Total Matches 76 Season Total Matches - 16, F Grade – 6, u14 – 9 Morgan‟s courage and determination lead to some great results this season, particularly with the bat. His ability to apply learning he had gained from senior cricket, particularly his ability to concentrate on the task at hand, was a valuable contribution to the u14 team. J Van Minnen Total Seasons 5, Total Matches 68 Season Total Matches - 13, F Grade – 3, u14 – 10 James built further upon his skills with the bat. There was a considerable improvement made in James‟s ability to bowl consistent line and length.

U12A Team Report 2011/2012

The boys had another great season with some inspiring performances. The restructuring of the FDCA grades meant that only 4 teams where left in the U12A & U12A Reserve grades which consequently meant we played the same teams many times throughout the season. Despite this the boys enjoyed themselves & always gave it their best & although they weren’t wining a lot of games never lost their enthusiasm.

The season culminated into a truly magnificent victory in the semi final against a long time rival & hot favourites Mordialloc. The game was played in great spirit as always when we play Mordi & I don’t think we have every beaten them in the many years I’ve been involved with the juniors, so it was a fantastic effort by the boys. Although as always it was a team effort there were stand out performances by Matt Moloney & Matt Bruce both taking a couple of crucial wickets early in the game which made it very difficult for Mordi to recover from. I was so proud to see the boys have this well earned success & to walk away with the knowledge that as a team they could beat anyone if they put there minds to it. This capped off a wonderful year for us all & the end of an era in terms of my time with the U12 teams as Ethan & I will be moving to the U14’s next season along with a handful of other players. I’m sure the U12’s are in good hands with John Fuller taking over & he should bring some renewed vitality to the group.

Apologises for not having the time to put together a more detailed report.

. St Brigids St Louis under 12 a Reserves Season Report 2011 / 2012

The under 12 A Reserves (Better known as 12 B‟s) this season consisted of 24 players with a mixture of 8 year olds, 9 year olds, 10 year olds, 11 year olds and 12 year olds. 40% of the team was made up of 1st year rookie players!

The improvement in the Team was a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the Team and all the Dedicated Parents. I would like to thank everyone one who has been involved. Although we were outplayed on most occasions during the season by some more experienced opposition teams, all of our players stepped up to the pressure of a match and performed well in some tight matches. The team spirit of our group of 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 year olds was quite inspiring and to participate in the Grand Final was a reward to the boys for a fantastic Team effort.

Fielding was a highlight of the season with the results above!

Jasper was involved in a couple of assisted run outs with Cale that were highlights of the season he also took 4 catches including one as wicket keeper. Jasper is a great team player and has a great sense of humor he will always stand up for his team mates. Jasper was awarded the coaches award for 2011/ 2012 season Thanks to Bruce and Mandy and his Grand dad for getting Jasper to the games! I really look forward to coaching Jasper next year when he is taller than me!

Kane (Rookie) Hutchinson Debut Season for the Club Played 9 games in the B's and 3 games in the A's. Kane Bats Right Handed and Bowls fast left handed. Kane Bowled 32 Over‟s and took 10 wickets for 79 runs. Best bowling 2 for 7 in the semi final off 5 over‟s! Kane batted well all season and trained like he played his top score was 18 and he came third on the batting averages not bad for a first year player. Kane took 3 catches in the field and probably the best caught and bowled I seen in Under 12's cricket taking the catch in his right hand and you should have seen the celebration. Great First year Kane you will do well in the Under 14's you were a pleasure to coach Kane will be a great asset in the under 14's next season and will get plenty of LBW's. I would like to Thank Blair for assisting when I was away and he was inspirational at supporting and encouraging the boys both on and off the Field Thanks Blair!

Matthew Pettinella Debut Rookie season for the Club. Matthew developed and improved as the season progressed. Highlights of the season remaining not out on five occasions and did not give his wicket away in the semi and grand final. Matthew did not score a lot of runs but was involved in some good partnerships with his team mates he was solid and took the ball on the body on a number of occasions. Matthew was consistent in the field and took a great catch in the Semi Final at Point. Matthew‟s best bowling was in the Semi final 2 over‟s 0/7. Matthew was a pleasure to coach I look forward to seeing him next season. Thanks to Andrew for scoring and getting Matthew to the games.

Mitchell Bean has played 19 games for the Club Mitchell is a technically correct batsman a great Wicket Keeper who always gets his body behind the ball he took 3 great catches while he was wicket keeping and also assisted with a great run out. Mitchell was responsible for Keeping for more than half of the games and also proved himself with his Bowling taking 3 wickets for the season best bowling 2/5 His best batting was in the Grand final where he remained not out on 5. Mitchell was retired not out on 5 occasions and had two ducks. Mitchell made a special Journey Back to Play on Sunday in the Semi Final Great Season Mitchell Thanks Kim and Cameron for getting Mitchell to the games

Rhys Gillard Debut Rookie season for the Club Rhys played 11 games in the B's. Rhys plays the game of cricket like a natural. He took some great outfield catches and has a strong throwing arm. A left handed batsmen with a great technique. Highest score for the season of 10 not out against Chelsea with some fantastic pull shots. Rhys bowled well all season taking 9 wickets for 98 runs with best figures of 3 for 2 almost taking a hat trick against Aspendale before Christmas. Rhys trains hard and will be a young player to watch in the future. Great season Rhys you were pleasure to coach and Thanks to Anna and Dave for getting Rhys to the games.

Vikrant Vinodhram has played 20 games for the Club. This was Vikrant‟s 2nd year and he played 9 games in the B's Vikrant was our designated hitter in the middle order, his highest score was 3 but on many occasions he through his wicket away chasing runs for the team. Vikrant has a great eye and has no fear when it comes to batting, Vikrant bowled well during the season and had a good economy rate for a slow bowler his best figures were 1/5 and took 4 wickets for the season. Vikrant took a great caught and bowled against Chelsea. Vikrant loves his cricket and was a pleasure to coach. Thanks to Ann and Vinodh for the great photos and getting him to the games.

We must always remember that as well as teaching the players the obvious skills of cricket – batting, bowling and fielding – we are also required to focus on promoting good sportsmanship and a love of the game that they can enjoy whether they win or lose and that they can carry into later life as they play at a more senior level.

Big Thanks to the Committee for the Fuller Family’s first full time season as Player’s and Making my Junior Coaching Role at SBSLCC a rewarding experience and hopefully for many more seasons to come.

Thanks to “Geoff Kilner”

Mate it was a great fun thanks for getting me down to the Cave.

St Brigids St Louis CC ROOKIES 2011/12

Well I must say what a great year the Rookies have had in field. The Rookies had quite a few outright wins during the year and with first year players the future is looking great.

Riley Pickett had a great year with all bat ball & gloves

Hayden Vella has picked up on his bowling technique

Kane Vella has found form with the bat

Jack Dunn has really come on with leaps & bounds, especially with his fielding

Miles O'Leary has really enjoyed & played well with the group

Lucas & Liam Segar both made the other teams during the season and both have had a great season

Jack Flavell has had an outstanding season with the bat

Mitchell Sellars has improved in all aspects of the game

Jude Burke also had a stellar season. As coach of the Rookies I cant wait to get back into the nets to keep the team improving and most importantly enjoying the game of cricket. I would also like to add that I'm proud to be involved in a great cricket club with a lot of great people at the club. Thanks & cheers Eddie Vella
