From broken bones and viral bugs, to major surgery and life threatening conditions, the staff there see it all. Many patients arrive via the hospital’s emergency department which, last year, saw over 5,000 children after falls, head injuries and even objects stuck up noses. While 90% go home the same day, others aren’t so lucky. One boy staying overnight is nine-year-old Jack. What began as a fun game of hide and seek in school, ends in A&E with a suspected broken arm. His grandparents are with him but, like many children in pain, Jack just wants his mum. Nana’s on the case desperately trying to reach her at work. Young patients also get referred to the ward’s assessment unit by GPs. That is the case with three-year-old Annwyn, who’s suffering from a nasty eye infection. In danger of losing her eyesight, it’s off to the eye clinic for further investigation. Six-year-old Cara was brought in by ambulance due to concerns that her appendix may burst. As her condition worsens, tough decisions have to be made about what to do next. Jordan Harris 2 SIX NATIONS SIN BIN Friday, February 8 BBC One Wales, 7pm Gabby Logan and Gareth Thomas are back and ready to kick-start the rugby party ahead of the second Six Nations match. Looking ahead to Wales v Italy, the pair are joined in front of a studio audience by a host of guests - including former Rugby Union and Rugby League player Scott Quinnell and television and radio presenter Wynne Evans. Meanwhile, comedian Kiri Pritchard-McLean offers an alternative match guide and the team get a taste of Italian Welsh culture courtesy of Robert Sidoli. Gareth also enlists his former team-mates, including Shane Williams, Adam Jones and James Hook, to take on a bizarre rugby world record attempt - with friendly rivalry running high every time. Gwawr Jones 3 SECRET LIFE OF FARM ANIMALS Friday, 8 February BBC One Wales, 8.30pm The Secret Life of Farm Animals series tests animal intelligence, discovers unlikely relationships and uncovers a side of farm animals you’ve never seen before. It’s harvest season on the farm - one of the busiest periods in the farming calendar. The programme follows a litter of piglets from birth as they grow up in the Brecon Beacons. It tests the theory that every piglet always returns to the same teat to suckle and finds out why pigs are very clean animals - despite loving to wallow in mud. And pigs tell porkies. The Secret Life of Farm Animals reveals how they are masters at the art of deception. Some farmers are discovering the benefits of beasts of burden and, in a farm near Welshpool, Nick Burton is restoring the surrounding woodland using serious horsepower. The farm’s formidable logging machine is 22-year-old Dutch Draft mare Elza. Secret Life of Farm Animals meets a pair of kunekune pigs raised as domestic pets in the heart of London and visits a farm that uses llamas to guard its sheep. Also on the farm is a lonely pet rabbit with a remarkable identity crisis. Each morning white lop eared rabbit Peter leaves his farmhouse home in Dihewyd, near Aberaeron, and braves the Ceredigion countryside in search of playmates. He’s been interacting with an ewe and her triplets for several weeks, in a relationship straight from the pages of Beatrix Potter. Mae’r Parris yn gwneud penderfyniad mawr. Mae pawb ym Mhenrhewl yn poeni am Sioned, tra bod Diane yn arbed croen Jason. A fydd Aaron yn derbyn y cynnig i gyfarfod â Ben yn y cnawd? Mae Gwyneth yn yfed er mwyn dygymod gyda’i hunigrwydd. Mae Jaclyn yn falch bod ei Mam yng nghyfraith am ddychwelyd i’w fflat yn Llandysul. Pwy dylai Ed a Kelly wahodd i’w priodas? Mae Ed yn gor-ymateb pan mae Kelly yn digwydd dweud enw Angela. Mae wyneb o’r gorffennol yn helpu Hywel gyda’i ganiatad cynllunio. Ed is worried that Jason knows about his terrible secret. The Parris come to a big decision. Everyone in Penrhewl is worried about Sioned, while Diane saves Jason’s skin. Will Aaron accept the invite to meet Ben in the flesh? Gwyneth turns to drink to deal with her loneliness. Jaclyn is glad that her mother in law will be returning to her flat in Llandysul. Who should Ed and Kelly invite to their wedding? Ed over-reacts when Kelly happens to mention Angela’s name. A face from the past helps Hywel with his planning permission. Gwawr Jones 5 .

  • And We Were Singing Hymns and Arias …
AND WE WERE SINGING HYMNS AND ARIAS ….. More memories from Joe For the third of my lockdown projects, and with the help of Gethin Williams, Keith Warren, Jeremy Wood and Dr Haydn James, I take a look at all the sporting arena performances that the London Welsh Male Voice Choir have been involved in. The Arenas The rehearsals are over. You walk out in your red jackets, heart-thumping, into a half empty stadium and stand on the pitch, pre-match, looking at the vast space of the arena that will, in a short time, be packed to the rafters with fervent supporters. You are performing to a captive audience who’s heart and soul are perfectly in tune with yours and who give you their undivided attention as the atmosphere is ramped up minutes before kick-off. You are privileged to be here, walking on hallowed turf. You feel the excitement and pride of appearing before an expectant nation. You smell the newly cut and watered grass. You hear the roar and stand in unison with your heroes as they walk onto the pitch. There is a moment’s silence as the crowd rises and all eyes are on you, and your eyes are on the conductor, as his baton brings in the band accompaniment before experiencing the spine-tingling emotion of singing your national anthem to an arena packed with rugby fans and a live television audience of millions. You are part of extraordinary matches and witness legends being made, and folklore created in song. You are on the fi eld with The London Welsh Male Voice Choir and you will be part of some of Wales’s most iconic rugby matches in modern times.

  • Rabodirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2013/14 ROUND 15 PREVIEWS ROUND 15 FIXTURES
RaboDirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2013/14 Round 15: 20th – 23rd February 2014 ROUND 15 PREVIEWS With the international weekend kicking off on Friday night, the majority of the RaboDirect PRO12 games take place on Sunday, however Cardiff Blues open round 15 with their game against current champions, Leinster at the Arms Park on Thursday evening and if past form is any guide Cardiff will have their work cut out to claim victory in this match. The sole game on Saturday is also in Wales with Edinburgh Rugby visiting Llanelli to play Scarlets, who missed out last round due to the weather in Belfast. The Scots do not travel well, so Scarlets must be hoping to put their own home record back on track in this fixture. The remaining four games take place on Sunday, with a TV double header in Italy, Benetton Treviso hosting Ulster and Zebre facing another Irish province, Connacht. Connacht’s victory over Edinburgh last time out saw them swap places with Zebre at the foot of the table, which could be reversed if Zebre claim this tie. Ulster on the other hand will be hoping they can make up some ground on the teams above them in the Play-Off zone. At the same time the remaining two Welsh regions will be in action in the principality. Newport Gwent Dragons opponents’ Glasgow Warriors, currently sit in 4th place in the table courtesy of one more win than Ulster, and still have two games in hand over the three teams above them. The outstanding game must be the pick of the weekend, leaders Munster travelling to face 3rd placed Ospreys, who claimed a record victory over Treviso in their last game at the Liberty Stadium.

  • Rabodirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2013/14
RaboDirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2013/14 Round 17: 21-23 March 2014 PREVIEW ROUND 17 Having led Leinster to the RaboDirect PRO12 title last season, Ireland coach Joe Schmidt took the RBS 6 Nations crown at the first time of asking in a tense finish to the Championship last weekend. Following on Ireland’s success it is perhaps appropriate that as the RaboDirect PRO12 returns to centre stage three of the top four teams are Irish Provinces. Schmidt’s former team, Leinster are in action at the RDS on Friday night, they and Munster both host Italian opposition in round 17 and whilst the records seem to point in favour of two home wins, neither side can afford to slip up as they chase a top two finish. Third placed Ulster are also in action on Friday night, their bonus point win over Scarlets in their rearranged game last week has pulled them closer to the leaders as the battle for home advantage in the Play-Offs intensifies. Ospreys, the only non-Irish side currently in the Play-Off Zone, know they have a fight on their hands to maintain that position as Glasgow Warriors are just three points behind them but still have two games in hand. Ospreys face fellow Welsh Region Cardiff Blues on Friday night, whereas Glasgow Warriors welcome Scarlets to Scotstoun on Saturday, the Welshmen did not make up any ground on the top four in their rearranged fixture last week. The next two weeks could be critical in any team’s aspirations of making the end of season Play-Offs as the pressure starts to build towards the season finale.

  • The Vital Link Guide
Sporting Legends Real Fast Life Fiction Tense Thrillers The Vital Link Guide The Hardest Test Scott Quinnell Introduction The launch of a fourth set of Quick Reads titles on World Book Day in March 2008 provides another great opportunity to introduce less confident adult readers to the world of books. This is particularly important during the 2008 National Year of Reading which has adult literacy learners as a priority audience. The response to the books published since the launch of the Quick Reads initiative in March 2006 has been enormously positive. Thousands of people have discovered an enjoyment of reading for the first time. Tutors and other professionals have recorded an increase in learners’ confidence, motivation and acquisition of literacy skills. The Vital Link encourages practitioners to integrate reading for pleasure into their work with adult literacy learners through partnership with the public library service. Support from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills has enabled us to provide tools to link the Quick Reads into regular teaching practice and into more informal contact with adults who are improving their literacy skills. As part of this work, The Vital Link has created resources to support use of the Quick Reads. These provide a ‘way in’ to using the books in a range of settings through ideas for discussion and extension activities. We have included suggestions for other reading materials, printed and online, and curriculum references for the main learning points. The resources for the Quick Reads published in 2008 are available to download as individual PDF or Word files from www.vitallink.org.uk.
