The spectral properties of the extended emission of the gas present in Antlia were studied using data from the XMM–Newton satellite, complemented with optical images of Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) Blanco telescope, to attain for associations of the optical sources with the X-ray emission. -

Duke, Director of the Solar System Exploration Division of the NASA Johnson Space Center. At a meeting of the Lunar and Planetary Sample Team (LAPST), Dr. Duke (at the time also Science Director of the Office of Exploration, NASA Headquarters) suggested that future lunar geoscience activities had not been planned systematically and that geoscience goals for the lunar base program were not articulated well. LAPST is a panel that advises NASA on lunar sample allocations and also serves as an advocate for lunar science within the planetary science community. LAPST took it upon itself to organize some formal geoscience planning for a lunar base by creating a document that outlines the types of missions and activities that are needed to understand the Moon and its geologic history. -

If you are new to DSC (Digital Setting Circles) you might want to start off by reading “A Digital Setting Circles Primer”. I’ve owned at least a half dozen different units, among them units from JMI, Celestron, Sky Commander and now the newest kid on the block; the Argo Navis. Coming out of Australia, the Argo makes use of modern technology and components, utilizing not one, but two Motorola 5206e ColdFire 40mhz 32bit CPU’s (the same family of CPU’s used in the popular Palm series of Personal Digital Assistants) 2mb of re-programmable flash memory, 512kb of static Ram, WildCard Innovations Argo Navis and 8kb of non-volatile Ram. It’s powered from 4 AA batteries or an 8 to 16V external source. When used with external power, the Argo offers an LCD heater function to assist in keeping the display functional and dew off. -

In protostellar clusters where most stars form, outflows impact the cluster environment by injecting momentum and energy into the cloud, dispersing the surrounding gas and feeding turbulent motions. Here we present several studies of very dense, active regions within low- to intermediate-mass Why: protostellar clusters. Our observations include interferometer (i.e. CARMA) and single dish (e.g. FCRAO, IRAM 30m, APEX) To recover flux over a range of spatial scales in the region observations, probing scales over several orders of magnitude. Catching Up with Barnard’s Star. Dave Eagle Within the constellation of Ophiuchus lies Barnard’s Star. It is a fairly faint red dwarf star of magnitude 9.53, six light years from Earth, so is fairly close to us. Its luminosity is 1/2,500th that of the Sun and 16% its mass. The diameter is estimated at about 140,000 miles, so it’s quite a small, faint star and well below naked eye visibility. So why is this star so well known? In 1916 Edward Barnard looked at a photographic plate of the area. When he compared this to a similar plate made in 1894, he noticed that one of the stars had moved between the time of the two plates being taken. Although all the stars in the sky in reality are all moving quite fast, from our remote vantage point on Earth most stars appear to appear virtually static during our lifetime as their apparent motion is extremely small. Barnard’s star, being so close and moving so fast, is one of the stars that bucks this trend. So fast indeed that it will subtend the apparent diameter equivalent to the Moon or Sun in about 176 years. So compared to other stars it is really shifting. The star is travelling at 103 miles per second and is approaching us at about 87 miles per second. In about 8,000 years it will become the closest star to us, at just under 4 light years and will have brightened to magnitude 8.6. Peter van de Camp caused great excitement in the 1960’s when he claimed to have discovered a planet (or more) around the star, due to wobbles superimposed on its movement. -

The Constellation Microscopium, the Microscope Microscopium Is A
The Constellation Microscopium, the Microscope Microscopium is a small constellation in the southern sky, defined in the 18th century by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751–52 . Its name is Latin for microscope; it was invented by Lacaille to commemorate the compound microscope, i.e. one that uses more than one lens. The first microscope was invented by the two brothers, Hans and Zacharius Jensen, Dutch spectacle makers of Holland in 1590, who were also involved in the invention of the telescope (see below). Lacaille first showed it on his map of 1756 under the name le Microscope but Latinized this to Microscopium on the second edition published in 1763. He described it as consisting of "a tube above a square box". It contains sixty-nine stars, varying in magnitude from 4.8 to 7, the lucida being Gamma Microscopii of apparent magnitude 4.68. Two star systems have been found to have planets, while another has a debris disk. The stars that now comprise Microscopium may formerly have belonged to the hind feet of Sagittarius. However, this is uncertain as, while its stars seem to be referred to by Al-Sufi as having been seen by Ptolemy, Al-Sufi does not specify their exact positions. Microscopium is bordered Capricornus to the north, Piscis Austrinus and Grus to the west, Sagittarius to the east, Indus to the south, and touching on Telescopium to the southeast. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations.
