Inset: Daniel Thielman's 'Tai Kuai' was the fi rst monohull to fi nish and fi rst in the big boat division. Second only to the Three Bridge Fiasco in size and popularity, the Great Vallejo Race — held May 4-5 — sets the stage for the racing season on San Francisco Bay. And the 114th running of the grand old dame of Bay Area sailing events didn't disappoint. The 181 boats that showed up for Saturday's start GREAT VALLEJO RACE it was diffi cult to make headway against the ebb,” said Tina Lund, crew on Jeff McCord's N/M 36 Quiver. The PHRF 3 winner hit the west side of the North Bay hard, along with Daniel Thielman’s R/P 44 Tai Kuai, Tony Pohl’s Farr 40 Twisted and Dan Alvarez’s JS9000 JetStream, all of which won their divisions. A massive hole stretched all the way from Tiburon to Richmond so anyone staying west made out as the breeze fi lled in. Of course that wasn’t true for every boat, but later divisions managed to break through on the westerly that fi lled in from behind. “Once the wind was blowing, Basic Instinct was just fl ying,” said Sau- salito's Memo Gidley, whose Elliott Urs Rothacher's 'BridgeRunner' ran down the competition to be the fi rst across the new fi nish line near the ferry terminal. off Treasure Island were treated to one of the most beautiful sailing days in recent memory. Typically a downwind run to the always friendly and accom- modating Vallejo YC, this year's forecast called for a light-air sun bake all the way up, countered by a forceful gale for Sunday's return race. Wrong on both counts. Under bright, sunny skies, the Golden Gate wind machine switched on early as a fi nger of cool stratus clouds divided the Bay into north and south. The fi rst of the 23 divisions started in a 15-knot westerly, but by the time the fi nal class of multihulls crossed the line more than an hour later, the breeze had piped up to well over 20 knots. "We barely got the reef tucked in min- utes before the gun," noted Jeff Mear- ing, trimmer aboard Jerome Ternynck's Extreme 40 SmartRecruiters. "Before I realized what time it was, we were sheeting hard and launched at the pin end." It's worth noting that the 'uber cats' hit boat speeds in the 20s almost immediately. Up at the front of the parade, early fl eets were the fi rst to encounter the ebb that persisted throughout the afternoon as the Bay began to empty its contents into the Pacifi c Ocean. “As soon as we got out of The Slot, we hit light air behind Angel Island and Page 88 • Latitude 38 • June, 2013 — FOR STARTERS 1050 won PHRF 4. “We were liter- ally planing for most of the race." While not everyone had the pleasure of planing their way to the Napa River, it was an unusu- ally quick trip for the entire fl eet, with most boats spending less than four hours on the 21.5-mile course. If they'd had a fl ood cur- rent, it would have been even quicker. “What an amazing race,” said BridgeRunner’s Urs Rothacher. “We had to pinch ourselves, ef- fortlessly gliding up San Pablo Bay with the speedo stuck at 22 knots." The SL33 and Smart- Recruiters fi nished within three minutes of each other, less than an hour and a half after they'd crossed the start line. Tai Kuai was just 15 minutes behind. This summer’s World Cup finals in Korea and Japan are no exception, as borne out by the fact that coaches from all of Europe’s national football associations gathered recently in Warsaw to cast their expert eye on FIFA’s flagship competition. The European Championship falls into the same category. Interest in EURO 2004 was running high even before the qualifiers got under way, particularly since many national teams are embarking on this adventure under a new coach. The first results have boosted or damped initial hopes, and speculation on the chances of qualifying is high among officials and fans. At the same time, the host association for the final tourna- ment, the Portuguese Football Federation, is working closely with UEFA to accomplish a vast and ambitious task, that of providing all the conditions needed for a successful event in the summer of 2004.

Soccer History Issue 18 THE FRENCH MENACE; THE MIGRATION OF BRITISH PLAYERS TO FRANCE IN THE 1930S In the spring of 1932 the pages of the national and sporting press in England informed readers that domestic football was under threat from the ‘French Menace’. This comprised a well-publicised, but rather futile, attempt to attract two of Chelsea’s star players, Tommy Law and Hugh Gallacher, to play in the newly formed French professional league, effectively tearing up their English contracts in return for a reportedly large sum of money. The French Menace followed the ‘American Menace’ and the ‘Irish Menace’, occasions when British players had been induced to break their contracts and migrate to play in the American Soccer and Irish Free State Leagues. The potential migration of players was a menace because in each case, initially at least, there was a threat to the fundamental structures that enabled clubs to control their players: the retain-and-transfer system and (in England) the maximum wage. The British associations were passing through an isolationist phase and had left FIFA, hence agreements on player transfers only held on transactions between the Home Countries. A player moving to a club in another association could do so, in theory, without hindrance and without the payment of a transfer fee. In practice, as each ‘menace’ arose the FA was forced to reach agreements with local bodies to ensure that players could be held to their contract. Football in France was nominally amateur prior to 1932, but this concealed the advent of a form of professionalism that had gathered pace in the years after the First World War.

  • The America's Cup 2007
The America’s Cup 2007: The Nexus of Media, Sport and Big Business A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Mass Communication Jared Peter Grellet ___________________________________________________ University of Canterbury 2009 ABSTRACT Over the past twenty years, the America’s Cup has grown into a significant media event in the New Zealand public sphere. This thesis focused on the New Zealand print media coverage of the 2007 regatta in Spain, analysing how different newspapers framed their coverage of the event, before interviewing the journalists who provided the stories to understand the constraints under which they worked. The analysis recorded and coded all stories relating to the America’s Cup in four of New Zealand’s daily metropolitan newspapers between April 2, 2007 and July 15, 2007. This thesis found that although the America’s Cup had shifted from between a competition between nations as the role of big-business increased, the New Zealand print media continued to focus on Emirates Team New Zealand, even though a significant number of New Zealanders were competing for foreign-based entries. The role of big businesses, including the New Zealand Government, went largely unreported in the New Zealand print media. Interviews with the journalists would suggest that their main role in Valencia was to report the racing, with limited time outside of this to report on other aspects of the event. 1. INTRODUCTION Over the past 25 years, the America’s Cup (AC) has gone from near obscurity in New Zealand, to an event that commands the nation’s attention.
