    THE LANGUAGE HERITAGE OF THE CARIBBEAN: LINGUISTIC GENOCIDE AND RESISTANCE Hubert Devonish University of the West Indies ABSTRACT The tactics may have changed. However the end results remain the same. Linguistic Genocide is no newcomer to the Caribbean. In the early stages of European colonization of the Caribbean, many indigenous languages disappeared due to widespread physical elimination of the populations speaking these languages. Today the danger is either one of hostile language policies or just plain indifference. New generations are no longer transmitting the language(s) of the communities into which they were born and more than ever community languages are disappearing on a large scale. A language will not survive if the older generation does not use it with the younger generation. With the disappearance of domains within which indigenous languages would naturally be used, opportunities for cross-generational transmission disappear. This paper will discuss the process by which Caribbean indigenous languages disappear and the forces favouring language preservation. The following year, upon excavation of two known burial sites, a test pit brought forth an additional burial of two individuals dating about 1025-1275 AD. Currently, there is very little known about this period causing confusion about the migration and settlement patterns of the Caribbean people during this time. Additionally, the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society is experiencing rising concerns of the demolition and utilization of their historical land and beaches for infrastructural development. As the tourist economy and access to the internet have increased, economic development has become far more important to developers and landowners than land preservation. As a result, this has caused an increase in beach erosion and historically documented and undocumented lands are being developed, erasing the cultures and histories present on this land.

Denomination of one of the largest and geographically most extensive family of the Americas, « Arawak » comes from the name given by the Europeans at a very early age of the Columbian era to a specific Amerindian group living in the Guianese coastal area in Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Venezuelan Guayana. Borrowing from European languages - mainly Spanish, English and Dutch - integrated into the Guianese Arawak lexicon has been previously mentioned and analyzed in several studies. May be less known is the reverse, although a big amount of scientific names of the original flora and fauna of the area that belong now to the universal knowledge and a significant number of vernacular names have been adopted by the European travellers who discovered simultaneously the name and the thing often through contact with the Arawaks.
