Skype Translator: Breaking Down Language and Hearing Barriers A Behind the Scenes Look at Near Real-Time Speech Translation William D. Lewis Microsoft Research One Microsoft Way Redmond, WA 98125 [email protected] Abstract In the Skype Translator project, we set ourselves the ambitious goal of enabling successful open-domain conversations between Skype users in different parts of the world, speaking different languages. Build- ing such technology is more than just stitching together the component parts; it also requires work in allowing the parts to talk with one another. In addition to allowing speech communication between us- ers who speak different languages, these technologies also enable Skype communication with another class of users: those who have deafness or hard of hearing. Accommodating these additional users re- quired design changes that benefited all users of Skype Translator. Not only does Skype Translator promise to break down language barriers, it also promises to break down the hearing barrier. 1 Introduction In 1966, Star Trek introduced us to the notion of the Universal Translator. Such a device al- lowed Captain Kirk and his crew to communicate with alien species, such as the Gorn, who did not speak their language, or even converse with species who did not speak at all (e.g., the Com- panion from the episode Metamorphosis). In 1979, Douglas Adams introduced us to the “Babelfish” in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which, when inserted into the ear, allowed the main character to do essentially the same thing: communicate with alien species who spoke different languages. Although flawless communication using speech and translation technol- ogy is beyond the current state of the art, major improvements in these technologies over the past decade have brought us many steps closer. -

It was a terrific nightmare vision and instantly I added the name of Murray Leinster to the list that already held A. Merritt, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and a few others. I have been reading and admiring his stories ever since, and I hope they go on forever. Mr. Leinster is a professional, in the finest sense of the word, meaning that he has the skills of his profession at his fingertips. And his profession is that of a master story-teller. His stories take hold of you from the first page and build with a sheer craftmanship and econ omy of effort that are the envy and despair of anyone who has ever tried to do the same thing. In science-fiction, imagination is even more important than writ ing skill, and the boldness of his imaginative concepts is one big rea son why Murray Leinster’s name has been up there in the bright lights for so long. -

Summary: The Enterprise, nearing the end of a benchmark survey of Sector 3, is treated to a rare sight - the occulting of Deneb by Antares. For an instant, red and blue fires of the two brightest stars in the galaxy appear as one. While this event brightened up the crew's morning, the rest of the day had thus far been uneventful; therefore, Kirk joins Spock and Lt. Larousse in the officer's lounge, where they are engaged in a word game - placing the sound "op" in front of each vowel. Lt. Larousse attempts to trip the Vulcan by making him pronounce "uranium hexafluoride" and Spock does so - "Opuropanopiopum hopexopaflopuoporopide" without skipping a beat. Their reverie is interrupted when Uhura's voice pages a yellow alert. On the bridge, a remarkable discovery is made after the ship crosses an extremely strong magnetic field: an unknown space vehicle the size of a large asteroid (some 217 km in diameter). When scans report sentient beings inside, a team of over 20 science and engineering specialists are called to an emergency meeting in the briefing room. Discussing their findings of the new world, it is determined to be a hollow planetoid that spins to create its own artificial gravity, and operates on a Bussard ramscoop drive system. -

Smith 1 Leah Smith Dr. Gideon Burton ENG 395 20 November 2016 Human Condition, the Prime Directive, and the Bard’s Connection with Star Trek The writings of William Shakespeare have been considered some of the best writing in human history and are often associated with high culture. Star Trek in contrast has been derided as a cult following group within pop culture portrayed on mass media television. However, throughout the period of time Star Trek has aired, there have been many episodes with both blatant and covert references to Shakespeare’s writings. Although Shakespeare may seem like a high culture phenomenon that has no place in a pop culture venue such as Star Trek, the connection between the two lies in the portrayal of the human condition and the hope for humanity that comes in recognizing ourselves in others. The year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and this has created an even more overwhelming celebration of his work through performance and dramatization. 2016 also marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Star Trek series. The alignment of these anniversaries is a coincidence but points to the significant connection that exists between the two. Shakespeare has always been a part of Star Trek and there are many episodes that contain references to plays, sonnets, characters, and Shakespeare in general. Many of these stem from the fact that many of the actors in Star Trek such as William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, and Christopher Plummer, were all Shakespearean actors in the theatre before they played these roles on the screen. -

Gunkel We've finally reversed the damage done by the Tower of Babel, and God, no doubt, is wondering what we're going to do for an encore. 1 The "Tower of Babel" (Genesis 11:1-9) provides an account of the plurality of languages as having issued from an original and apparently universal tongue. The first line of the fable reads: "And all the earth was one lip and there was one language to all." This mythic loss of an original universality and the subsequent attempts to reestablish it by overcoming the confusio linguarum already constitute a kind of universal idiom: "The story of the confusion of tongues, and of the attempt to redeem its loss through the rediscovery or invention of a language common to all humanity, can be found in every culture." 2 The computer and the technologies of computer-mediated communication manifest the most recent version of this supposedly universal endeavor. According to numerous popular and technical discourses, the computer promises to supply a technological solution to the linguistic cacophony that has been the legacy of Babel. In this manner, computer technology participates in an old and apparently universal obsession, one that situates universality as both its origin and its purpose. [End Page 61] In this paper I will undertake an examination of the Babelian information that currently circulates through cyberculture and determines the general significance of networked computer systems. -

Renee de Groot August 22, 2016 Abstract The American Civil War (1861-1865) has provided food for counterfactual speculation for historians, journalists, critics, and writers of all stripes for over a century. What if the Confederacy had won? What if the South had abolished slavery? What if Lincoln had lived? What if…? This thesis offers an anatomy of Civil War alternate history as a distinct though eclectic cultural form. It takes apart the most interesting manifestations and reassembles them to show four intriguing functions of this form: as a platform for challenges to narratives of Civil War memory, for counterintuitive socio-economic criticism, for intricate reflections on history writing and on historical consciousness. It shows the many paradoxes that rule Civil War alternate history: its insularity and global outlook, its essential un-creativity, its ability to attract strange bedfellows and to prod the boundaries between fact and fiction.
