Please do this. We NEED this. This is not a popular decision for your government. At the latest Tallahasee meeting 75% of the attendees there were against the killings. Why was their an unanymous FWC vote in favor of hunting if the majority of Florida is against this? We want solutions. We need better education programs for residents about how to deal with their trash. In the worst case scenario they can be darted and relocated. They should never be killed. Its their planet, too. Not just ours! Please male a difference in the world. Protect animal rights. Thank you. Your gift will make a huge difference in our fight to save Florida panthers. Dear frank, It’IIt is painful to imagine the sad sight of a dead or dying panther kitkitten, its twisted body just another road kill on a Florida back road. Last year, 25 critically endangered Florida panthers fell victim to to motorists. That is far more than in any other year. And it’s a serious blow for an animal whose total population in the wiworld is fewer than 200 individuals. Help save panthers and other vulnerable wildlife with a generous gift to Defenders of Wildlife. Once, thousands of these majestic cats roamed throughout the southeastern U.S. But today, their population remains in just five percent of their historical range in south Florida. These remaining panthers are trying to survive on a checkerboard of habitat that is crisscrossed with roads and choked with human development. Scientists believe that loss of panthers on roads is preventing the cats from expanding their range northward. As the economy improves, development pressure on these last remaining patches of habitat is rising rapidly along with plans for new and expanded roads. And panthers are dying. Your support for Defenders puts you on the front lines of efforts to rescue this great cat from oblivion. • We’re working to improve land use and transportation planning to avoid fragmentation of panther habitat; • We were instrumental in the passage of a constitutional amendment in Florida that will set aside more that $500 million per year for 20 years for land acquisition, management and restoration in Florida, including important panther habitat; • We’ve helped ensure installation of a Roadside Animal Detection System to warn motorists to slow down for panthers on US 41 that bisects Big Cypress National Preserve; • We’re advocating for more wildlife crossings that would allow panthers to travel safely within their home ranges; and • We’re working with state officials, developers and landowners to make private lands in panther territory more wildlife-friendly. With your help, panthers and people can safely share the landscape. We look forward to the day when panthers are thriving, their habitat protected, and vehicle deaths eliminated. Won't you help make that great day come soon? UCFP229, an approximately 2.5 year-old uncollared female Florida panther, was recovered on 12/31/2014 on 16th St SE in Golden Gate Estates in Collier County. The cause of death was vehicle collision. FP213, an approximately 5.5 year-old radiocollared female Florida panther, was recovered on 12/31/2014 on Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area in Hendry County. The cause of death is presumed to be interspecies aggression (killed while fighting another panther), but confirmation is pending necropsy results. Both carcasses are currently stored at the FWC Field Office in Naples and will be transported to the FWC Wildlife Research Lab in Gainesville for necropsy. These two deaths bring current totals to 33 Florida panther mortalities and 25 road mortalities for 2014.
