FC Barcelona and AC Milan began their UEFA Champions League campaigns together at the Camp Nou in September and for one of these two European heavyweights the journey will end at the same venue as their quarter-final reaches its conclusion. • After a goalless first leg in Italy, Barcelona's strong home record in the competition should make them favourites as they chase a fifth successive semi-final appearance – which would equal the record set by their arch-rivals Real Madrid CF from 1956 to 1960. Although winless on their European travels this term, Milan can take heart from having already earned a scoring draw at the Camp Nou at the start of the group stage. Previous meetings • The teams' matchday one meeting in Spain on 13 September finished 2-2, scoring a 92nd-minute equaliser for Milan after Pedro Rodríguez (36) and (50) had overturned Pato's goal in the first minute. • Barcelona prevailed 3-2 in the return on 23 November to secure first place in Group H, consigning the Rossoneri to the runners-up spot. Xavi Hernández hit a 63rd-minute winner after Zlatan Ibrahimović (20) and Kevin-Prince Boateng (54) had cancelled out leads given Barcelona by Mark van Bommel's own goal (14) and 's penalty (31). • The sides have squared off 14 times overall in UEFA competition, Barcelona recording five wins to Milan's four and scoring 19 goals to the Italian side's 18. Barcelona's record in six home outings against Milan reads W2 D3 L1. • Milan earned a 0-0 draw at Barcelona in their 2005/06 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg but lost the tie because of the preceding 1-0 home reverse. • The lineups for that second leg on 26 April 2006 were: Barcelona: Valdés, Belletti, Márquez, Puyol, Van Bronckhorst, Edmílson, Deco, Iniesta, Giuly (Larsson 69), Eto'o (Van Bommel 89), Ronaldinho. Milan: Dida, Kaladze, Costacurta ( 64), Stam, Serginho, Gattuso (Rui Costa 68), Seedorf, Pirlo, Kaká, Shevchenko, Inzaghi (Gilardino 79). • Milan's last victory against Barcelona came on 20 October 2004 in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Andriy Shevchenko scoring the only goal. , and substitute Massimo Ambrosini played for the Rossoneri with Xavi, Carles Puyol, Víctor Valdés and substitute Andrés Iniesta lining up for Barcelona. Ambrosini is the sole survivor of Milan's only previous victory at the Camp Nou, 2-0 on 26 September 2000. • The clubs' most high-profile encounter was the 1994 UEFA Champions League final in Athens, which Milan won 4-0. Milan also prevailed when the pair met in the 1989 UEFA Super Cup, winning 1-0 at home after a 1-1 away draw. Match background • Barcelona are unbeaten in 14 home fixtures dating back to October 2009, with 12 wins and two draws at the Camp Nou since then, including the 7-1 defeat of in the round of 16. • Barcelona also have a formidable home record in European Cup quarter-finals, with 11 wins out of 13. They had no quarter-finals to negotiate when reaching the final in 1991/92 and 1993/94 because the last eight was a group stage. • The holders have won their last five quarter-finals – four in a row between 2008 and 2011 – and another in 2006. Their last defeat at this stage was against Juventus in 2002/03, the Italian club inflicting on Barcelona their only quarter-final home loss. • The Azulgrana's overall record against Italian visitors to the Camp Nou is W10 D5 L2. • Barcelona won their first European Cup by beating Italy's UC Sampdoria 1-0 in the final 20 years ago in May. • Seven-times winners Milan have won 11 and lost three of the 14 quarter-finals they have contested. Their most recent victory was against FC Bayern München in 2006/07, the season of their last European triumph, when they drew 0-0 at home then won 2-0 away. The most recent defeat came against Spain's RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when they famously surrendered a 4-1 first-leg advantage in Galicia. They had no quarter-final matches en route to the final in 1992/93 and 1993/94. • Milan have yet to win away in the UEFA Champions League this season, posting three draws before the 3-0 loss at Arsenal FC in the last 16. • The Rossoneri last won in Spain when beating Real Madrid CF 3-2 in the 2009/10 group stage through an 88th-minute Pato strike. It was a rare success as their overall away record against teams from Spain is W4 D6 L10.

FC Barcelona: Josep Guardiola Date of birth: 18 January 1971 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, Al-Ahly Club, Dorados de Sinola Coaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona • Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spells with Brescia, 's Roma, Al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. • Won 40 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments through injury. • Having coached Barcelona's B team, became the 15th Catalan-born boss of the senior team in 2008 and won the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season in charge. • Success in the 2008/09 final made Guardiola the sixth man to lift the European Cup as a player and a coach. Barcelona followed up with victories in the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups at the start of 2009/10, going on to win the FIFA Club World Cup and retain the Liga title. • Steered the Azulgrana to a third successive Liga crown and their fourth European Cup in 2010/11.

AC Milan: Massimiliano Allegri Date of birth: 11 August 1967 Nationality: Italian Playing career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), , AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923 Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, AC Milan • A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, his hometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that season before heading back to Livorno. • Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals under Giovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari, Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003. • Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he won the Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion. • Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, this time as Serie A's best coach. Cagliari started the following season superbly but a bad run of results prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 – although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan. • Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004. In January 2012 he extended his contract until June 2014.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 19 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Eleven ties have gone to penalties, including the game between APOEL FC and in the 2011/12 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2012/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. • The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58. • Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC last season. • Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teams won Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a UEFA Champions League match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight this season. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 148 days, in Manchester United's 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 on 26 April 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
