NEXT DEADLINE: 2 OCTOBER 16TH

Prez Sez . . . By Bill Werling

ust got back from a two week vacation in my hometown of New Orleans. It is not the city J to visit if you are trying to watch your weight. Trust me!

I am not a preacher, nor do I play one on T.V., but I am going to talk about money. Dues will be going up to $25 next year, but if you renew your membership early you can save $5. Stay tuned for details.

Now is the time to seriously consider serving your club. We will have elections in Novem- ber. All offices are open for nominations, but we have to replace three who will be leaving the board. Secretary (Jane Hamilton), Admin V.P. (Mike Norman), and Activities V.P. (Mark Ward) have served two years and will be leaving their posts. Bill Anderson and myself are completing our first year. In addition, Marino Fuentes is completing two years as Race Director. If you volunteer now, you can shadow Mar- ino during the upcoming Classic and “learn the ropes.”

This will be my last plea for volunteers for the Classic, October 17th. Many jobs allow you to volunteer and still run the race (especially parking). Please help if you possibly can.

Many upcoming events include The Classic, October 17th, Half & Full Marathon, Day, and the Christmas party, December 11th. The Christmas party will be held at Glendalough Manor, which is a beautiful, spacious facility. We will have an open bar, buffet dinner, and a dance floor. Make your plans now to attend.

See you on the paths and at the Classic!

FROM JIM & SANDY TUMAN

Bob,

I want to thank the Running Club for sending a Get Well card. We really appreciate your thinking of us. I hope you will express our thanks to the club members.

We were very disappointed when we found out Jim's lung cancer had re- turned. It has been all consuming getting through the chemo sessions. Jim has gone through 5 and has 1 more left in August. He will then have another PET scan when we will find out how he has responded to the treatment and make decisions about where we go from there.

I have been very frustrated with all of the Doctors responses to questions of nutrition and alternative methods to help combat the cancer. I have found a great book that I would recommend to anyone who faces cancer or knows someone with cancer. It is "Anti cancer: A new way of Life" by David Serva- Schreiber, MD, PhD. I borrowed a copy from the library. He has done a lot of research and talks about the foods to eat and not eat for each kind of cancer. There is not much research into how our diet affects us because there is no money to be made from these discoveries. This book tells how to keep from get- ting cancer, so I would recommend it to everyone.

Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Mitch Butler—Hunting Led Him To Running races - Brooks and the Army Hooah Race. Five years ago you could not have convinced me that I could ever run 6 miles. I‟m registered to run this year‟s Peachtree. I didn‟t have a qualifying time, so I‟m in the 9th start group. Please hold the bus for me. (Ed. Note: We did wait, of course, and Mitch successfully finished his first Peachtree with a time of 53:25 which qualifies him for Time Group 1 next year!) The most unusual and memorable running experience was probably this past winter when I was running at Lake Horton Park. It was late afternoon and getting dark when I finished. The park closes at sunset so my truck was the only vehicle in the parking lot. I reached for my key, but only found a hole in the little pocket. I started walking the 2.5 mile trail looking for my key in the dark. This was unsuccessful as you would expect. After about an hour one of the County Marshals came along and let me use his phone to call home. My wife Wendy brought my keys, and I made it home safely. About a week later, I was running at the same place. I Mitch and Wendy with children Megan, Julianna, and Bradley walked by a trash can next to my regular parking space. at Ponce Inlet, Florida. Living in Brooks in the early 70‟s, we didn‟t get a chance to get out much. We had heard of Peachtree City, which was in the early development stages. There were swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, and dogs on leashes. I‟ve seen a lot Fishing with son Bradley on Spruce Creek of changes in Fayette County. near Daytona, Florida.

The 2009 Fayette County Fitness Challenge

The Fayette County Fitness Challenge will be a “competition” to find the “Most Fit Schools, Companies, and Organizations” in Fayette County. The definition of “Most Fit” will be the organizations that have the highest PERCENTAGE of their staff members or employees that can finish (walking or running) either of the 5K races or the 15K Race. It will not be based at all on the speed or finishing times of the teams. Preliminary Rosters must be submitted no later than September 18, 2009, to secure a guaranteed team spot. After that date, it is possible we will cut off new team entries. If you have submitted a preliminary team roster by September 18th, you will be able to add more team members to that roster. All 5K finishers will count as one team member to have finished. We anticipate that the two 5Ks will fill up quickly, so we are offering a “bonus” in the 15K race. Any team member that runs in the 15K will be counted as TWO team members in the calcula- tion of the Fitness Challenge. The 9 proposed divisions for this year‟s Fitness Challenge are: Corporate Divisions: Non-Profit / Government Divisions: I 10-20 Employees I Elementary Schools II 21-50 Employees II Middle Schools III 51-150 Employees III High Schools IV More than 150 Employees IV Non-Profit Companies V Military Organizations All divisions will have awards issued to the First, Second, and Third place teams. Additionally, there will be awards is- sued to each Division for the most “total number of finishers,” but every organization will benefit from this team building experience. First Lieutenant Daniel Berschinski, West Point graduate of 2007, and son of long time running club members Susan and Robert Ber- schinski, was seriously injured when he stepped on a landmine while conducting dismounted operations with his Stryker Brigade unit near Kandahar, Afghanistan, last week. On Friday, he was flown from Kandahar to Bagram Air Base. Medical status is the same - critical but stable. That is good. He has survived the first flight and is OK'd for the next flight segment. Below is an update sent from the family on Sunday, August 23rd. Please keep the entire family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this trying period.

Dear Friends, Bob and I got the best 4am call we have ever gotten. Daniel was at Landstuhl and arrived in good shape. It's not U.S. soil, but it's not Afghan soil either. He will have surgery tomorrow morning (10pm tonight our time) and during the night we will be called with the results. We also hope we will hear whether he will be on the Tuesday or Thursday plane. The decision may not be a medical one, it may just be based on “How do the flights look.” So we should not take it as bad if he does not get out until Thursday. If he leaves on the Tuesday flight, Bob and I will meet him at Walter Reed. If he leaves on the Thursday flight, Bob, Robbie and I will leave tomorrow to go to Germany. Either way we will be able to see him soon. Thank all of you for keeping up with him and staying in touch with us. For those of you who sent email notes, I have kept them in a folder for Dan so he can read them when he is able.

Chick-fil-A has been one of the longest and most loyal supporters of the Peachtree City Running Club. It has also been one of the longest enduring restaurant chains. It recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding by Mr. Truett Cathy, just 20 miles from here, and in those 60 years it has grown to one of the largest food franchises in the world. The Cathy family still resides in Fayette County and is one of the most philanthropic families and companies in the area. Not only does Chick-fil-A support us as a sponsor every year, CEO Dan Cathy actually runs in our 15K every year along with a large contingent from Chick-fil-A. A better more loyal corporate running sponsor would be hard to find. Thank you Chick-fil-A!
