BACKGROUND INFORMATION

It is a common genealogy tip to find out all you can about your ancestors within the United States before attempting to search for records in the home country. United States records can give clues to the regions to focus on when looking for records in the home country. For example, we know that Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan stated that he was from Limerick, Ireland on his social security application. Knowing he is from one county in Ireland, eliminates fruitless searches in other counties in Ireland.

Knowing the county is helpful; but, knowing the ecclesastical or civil parish narrows the search even further. The parish helps pinpoint the correct ancestor at the correct time. Prior to this research project, no direct evidence has been found, regarding a parishHartigan. There may be records within the United States that will point to a parish in Ireland. Knowing the county and parish before attempting to search for records in Ireland will reduce the chances that the wrong family researched.

WORKING HYPOTHESIS

Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan was married in a Catholic Church and the marriage register lists him as being from Ireland. Limerick was listed on Jeremiah’s SS-5 form for place of birth. His parents likely belonged to a Catholic parish in the county of Limerick in Ireland at the time of Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan’s birth. Therefore, he was likely born to Catholic parents in the 1870s in Ireland.

FINDINGS & ANALYSIS - RESEARCH REPORT

Obituaries and Death Records

● Searched Newspapers.com and GenealogyBank.com for articles and obituary listings for announcements regarding the death of Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan in April 1951 in order to find an obituary for Jeremiah, which should include his birth date and place of birth, specifically the parish. However, no results were found.

● Searched the death index at Ancestry.com for a death certificate number for Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan. The number will be helpful when mailing for a death certificate, which may include birth information. However, no results were found. ● While on Ancestry.com, I searched the Pennsylvania Death Certificates, hoping to find a birth date, place of birth and parents names. The death certificate was located.8 It included the burial location of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Montgomery County, PA. However, the death certificate did not include Jeremiah’s parents or parish. The death certificate indicated the place of burial as Holy Sepulchre cemetery. ● Searched Findagrave.com for burial information at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Montgomery County, PA for Jeremiah Hartigan born between 1865 and 1885. I was looking for a picture of the gravestone, which may indicate the place of birth. However, no results were found. ● An unexpected find occurred while looking at the search results within the Pennsylvania Death Certificate database, when searching for the surname, “Hartigan.” Mary Ellen Hartigan appeared in the search results.9 Her residence is listed as 3320 N. 20th St. This is an 8-minute drive from Jeremiah’s place of death, 4546 N 15th St. Her death certificate also states that she was born in Limerick and her parents are Jeremiah Hartigan and Johanna McNamara. Mary Ellen is possibly Jeremiah’s sister. This relationship question should be researched further.

Birth and Baptismal Records

● Searched the RootsIreland database for baptismal abstracts for Surname = Hartigan, First Name: Jer and Birth Year between 1870 and 1880 in order to find the Catholic parish. This surprisingly resulted in only one result. I was surprised since the surname Hartigan is common in Ireland; I was expecting more results. The result that appeared was for Jeremiah with his parents Jeremiah Hartigan and mother Johanna McNamara, who were Roman Catholic.1 0 The same parents' names listed on Jeremiah Joseph’s social security application. The abstract also had a link to the image of the record located at the National Library of Ireland database. Looking at the image revealed a baptism date of 6 May 1875 in the county of Limerick, which is 17 days earlier than the birth date that Jeremiah Joseph records on his social security application. Jeremiah may have never been told the exact date of his birth. The Catholic parish listed on the record is Rockhill & Buree, which is within the county of Limerick, Ireland. Given the baptism was conducted in May in the county of Limerick with the same parent names, this is likely the baptismal record for the same Jeremiah listed on the social security application of 27 Nov 1936.

● Searched the irishgenealogy.ei website for civil birth records in order to find the actual birth date for Jeremiah Joseph. I searched for civil records, last name = Hartigan and event = birth, which resulted in 1598 Harigan items. I further filtered for the district = Bruree, union = , county = Limerick. This location encompases the Catholic parish of Rockhill & Bruree. This resulted in only one item, Johanna born 1864 to Jeremiah Hartigan with the occupation of laborer and mother, Johanna Mack.1 1 Mack could possibly be the short form of McNamara. The informant for the record is the father, Jeremiah Hartigan. However, his mark is shown as his signature and therefore, he did not write the information into the records book. Instead, it was recorded by the registrar, who could have misheard the mother’s last name. ● Searched the RootsIreland database for other children of Johanna. Searched Surname = Hartigan and mother’s first name = Johanna with the birth year between 1855 and 1875. This resulted in 22 matches. By adding the filter father’s name = Jer, the results narrowed to Mathew1 2, Johanna1 3, Ellen1 4, Catherine1 5, Jeremiah1 6 and Jacobus1 7. All were baptized in the same parish, Rockhill & Bruree between 1864 - 1877, a nine year stretch.

Marriage Records

● Searched for marriage records within the RootsIreland database from 1855 - 1880 for Surname = Hartigan and First Name = Her. Three marriages for Jeremiah Hartigan appeared. Spouses where Johanna, Janet and Jane. Johanna was married to Jeremiah in the Rockhill & Bruree parish on 10 Feb 1858.1 8 The difference between the marriage date and Jeremiah Joseph’s baptism record is 17 years. This is possible. Need to find more information regarding Johanna’s age to confirm Jeremiah Joseph is the son of this couple. ● Searched the irishgeneaology.ei website for civil marriage records. I searched for civil records, last name = Hartigan and event = marriage. I further filtered for the district = Bruree, union = Kilmallock, county = Limerick. This resulted in 30 items. One of the 30

items listed the marriage of Michale Hartigan to Mary Danaher on 25 August 1895.1 9 The groom's father is listed as Jeremiah Hartigan, laborer and Micheal is listed as residing in Rockhill, the same parish where Jeremiah Joseph was baptised.

CONCLUSION

The objective of this research project was to discover the eccleasiastical parish for the place of baptism or the civil parish for the place and date of birth for J eremiah Joseph Hartigan. The baptismal register was located, providing the location of the parish and the date of baptismal, Rockhill & Bruree, 6 May 1875. No civil records have been found to confirm the actual place or date of birth.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

● Is Mary Ellen Hartigan, who resided at 3320 N. 20th St. in the 1940s, Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan’s sister? ● When and where was Johanna McNamara born in Ireland? ● Were any other children born between 1858 and 1864 to Jeremiah Hartigan and Johanna McNamara? ● Did any of the siblings emigrate to the United States?
