BACKGROUND INFORMATION It is a common genealogy tip to find out all you can about your ancestors within the United States before attempting to search for records in the home country. United States records can give clues to the regions to focus on when looking for records in the home country. For example, we know that Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan stated that he was from Limerick, Ireland on his social security application. Knowing he is from one county in Ireland, eliminates fruitless searches in other counties in Ireland. Knowing the county is helpful; but, knowing the ecclesastical or civil parish narrows the search even further. The parish helps pinpoint the correct ancestor at the correct time. Prior to this research project, no direct evidence has been found, regarding a parishHartigan. There may be records within the United States that will point to a parish in Ireland. Knowing the county and parish before attempting to search for records in Ireland will reduce the chances that the wrong family researched. WORKING HYPOTHESIS Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan was married in a Catholic Church and the marriage register lists him as being from Ireland. Limerick was listed on Jeremiah’s SS-5 form for place of birth. His parents likely belonged to a Catholic parish in the county of Limerick in Ireland at the time of Jeremiah Joseph Hartigan’s birth. Therefore, he was likely born to Catholic parents in the 1870s in Ireland.
