The result settled a number of Drivers’ titles, with Toyota Racing’s Antony DAVIDSON and Sébastien BUEMI securing the top prize in LM P1, while the LM GTE Pro crown was sealed by AF Corse/Ferrari racers Gianmaria BRUNI and Toni VILANDER. Tyre strategy key in qualifying Qualifying practice for the 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain produced a contest in which tyre strategy helped Porsche Team to snatch pole position from Toyota Racing by mere tenths of a second. The German squad chose MICHELIN’s ‘soft high temperature’ compound, while Audi Sport Team Joest – which was represented by a single R18 e-tron quattro in qualifying – and Toyota Racing both opted for the French firm’s ‘medium high temperature’ alternative. The fastest lap was eventually posted by the N°14 Porsche 919 Hybrid in the hands of DUMAS/JANI who recorded a best time of 1m41.897s round the 5.412km Sakhir International Circuit, and an average lap of 1m43.145s. The N°8 Toyota TS040 Hybrid (DAVIDSON/BUEMI) was second fastest (+0.265s), followed by the N°20 Porsche 919 Hybrid (BERNHARD/HARTLEY, +1.046s). While Porsche’s choice proved judicious for qualifying, the question was whether it would be suitable for the start of the 6 Hours of Bahrain which took place with track temperatures standing at around 40°C, since the tyres used for qualifying had to be fitted for the first stint of the race? Romain DUMAS wasn’t sure… “I’ve been nominated to start the race in the N°14 Porsche and I think I will put on a good show for the spectators on soft compound tyres.

For the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), MICHELIN Motorsport has developed new tyres which are both narrower by five centimetres and two kilograms lighter. In spite of the harsher constraints to which they are exposed as a result of the latest technical regulations, their safety performance, longevity and competitiveness lived up to the expectations of the French firm’s partners. The drivers were regularly able to complete three and even four stints on the same set, something which was far from a foregone conclusion prior to the start given that the latest-generation P1 prototypes are even faster than last season’s cars and consequently place higher demands on their tyres. The previous Porsche 907 only had a 2200 cc Type 771/1 flat-8 engine developing 270 hp. The new 3-litre Type 908 flat-8 air-cooled boxer engine produced 257 kW (350 hp) at 8400 rpm. The 908 originally was a closed coupe to provide low drag at fast tracks but from 1969 on was mainly raced as the 908/2, a lighter open spyder. A more compact 908/3 was introduced in 1970 to complement the heavier Porsche 917 on twisty tracks that favored nimble cars, like Targa Florio and Nürburgring.

In a Porsche, of course. In 2016 they did it again. Herbert Linge At 88 years of age, it is not everyone who can still change their shoes standing up. Herbert Linge can. With one hand propped on a bale of straw, he pulls the old loafer from his right foot and slips on a “brand new” old racing shoe. Then comes the left. They are quite special shoes – made by his old friend Francesco “Ciccio” Liberto. The shoemaker from Cefalù knows almost all of the old warriors, and many racing drivers had tailor-made, soft, slim pairs made by the gifted leather worker years ago. Linge had three pairs. Two of them wore out in endless high-speed battles, but one pair he has preserved. So far he has worn them just one time – for the film shoots for Steve McQueen’s epic “Le Mans”. And now again today: Once more he is driving an original section of the Targa Florio, once the wildest and most dangerous road race in the world. In an old, distinguished car – the Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder. For special occasions some people like to slip on a suit and tie – Linge prefers his new old shoes. Four Targa Florio legends back together in Sicily Everyone is feeling a sense of occasion – not just Linge, but also Gijs van Lennep (76), Günther Steckkönig (80) and Vic Elford (81).
