Garda Station, Credit Union & Centra P&D, Admin Building, St. Mary’s Campus Directions from Jack Lynch Tunnel to St. Mary’s Campus On approaching the Jack Lynch Tunnel Roundabout take the 3rd Exit (signposted Cork) You will now approach the Dunkettle roundabout ; take the 1st exit onto Lower Glanmire Road - N8 (signposted Cork) Continue forward onto Lower Glanmire Road - N8 – you will pass the ‘Silversprings Moran Hotel’ and a ‘petrol garage’ on the right Continue forward along the quay; Bear left onto the N8 (signposted ‘All Routes’ ) Continue forward through 4 sets of traffic lights onto Saint Patrick's Quay - N22. At the 4 th set of traffic lights you will see the ‘Opera House’ across the river. Continue through these traffic lights, immediately the road splits in 2, bear right up the hill. You will see the ‘Dominican centre’ and ‘John Buckley Sports shop’ continue forward up this hill. Continue to the next set of traffic lights. The road splits in 2 here, bear left up the hill. Continue forward to the next set of traffic lights. The ‘North Cathedral’ will be on your right. Continue straight ahead, you are now on Cathedral Road. Continue straight up this hill until you reach the top, you will pass another ‘church’ on the right, continue straight ahead. The road veers to the right, you will see the ‘Garda Station’ and the ‘Credit Union’ your left. Continue on and you will see ‘Centra’ . Turn left at ‘Centra’ you are now at the entrance to ‘St. Mary’s Campus’ When you enter the Campus grounds the ‘Administration Building’ is immediately on your right across the green – a red bricked building with pillars. ‘Performance & Development Services’ entrance is via back of the building – drive past first parking area to back of building on the right. Entrance is across from open car park space at the back . Press “P&D” buzzer and wait for door to be released. Directions from Limerick to Performance & Development, Admin Building, St. Mary’s Campus, Bakers Road, Cork 1 2 P&D 4 5 3 Legend 1. The Commons Inn/Hotel 2. Blackpool Shopping Centre 3. Opera House / Christy Ring Bridge 4. North Cathedral 5. Garda Station, Credit Union & Centra P&D, Admin Building, St. Mary’s Campus Directions from Limerick to Performance & Development, Admin Building, St. Mary’s Campus, Bakers Road, Cork Start out on the Limerick Road to Cork. You will pass through Charleville, Buttevant & Mallow. Continue on the Mallow road, on approaching Cork City you will pass the ‘Commons Bar / Hotel ’ (located on the left) keep going straight. On approaching the ‘Blackpool Shopping Centre ’ continue straight ahead and drive over the flyover. At the traffic lights turn right for the city centre. Continue on this road until you reach a set of traffic lights at the ‘Christy Ring Bridge’. The ‘Cork Opera House ’ is located across the bridge. DO NOT CROSS OVER THE BRIDGE . Turn right at the traffic lights. After turning right at the lights the road immediately splits in 2, bear right up the hill . You will see the ‘Dominican centre’ and ‘John Buckley Sports shop’ continue forward up this hill. Continue to the next set of traffic lights. The road splits in 2 here, bear left up the hill . Continue forward to the next set of traffic lights. The ‘North Cathedral’ will be on your right. Continue straight ahead, you are now on Cathedral Road. In that way we can keep the resolution of the photos high and the size of both sections will be less than one megabyte. Part one is the magazine section and part two is the weekend roundup. The three Cup Finals in Croke Park provided some fine hurling but the crowd was just under 4,000 so it is probably back to the drawing board for those finals. Each needs to be played as a curtain raiser to a game from the Liam McCarthy Championship to create the right atmosphere. The Munster Final had patches of fine hurling and some fine individual displays but lacked the intensity of former classics. Both teams Tipperary and Waterford are continu - ing to make progress. Tipperary still look the best challenger to the champions but Wa - terford battled with heart and could yet make a final four berth. Best wishes ‘til next week from Hurling World.     2 FIELD OF DREAMS Sunday,FIELD OF DREAMS 15 July 1984. There were just five minutes left. The swaying, heaving, seething Tipperary crowd could almost taste the triumph. It had been thirteen long years since their last victory over the old enemy to the south. Many of the schoolchildren now screaming themselves hoarse around Semple Stadium couldn’t even remember a time when Tipperary were Munster champions, let alone All-Ireland holders. And yet glory now beckoned – and the sweet intoxication of beating Cork. Around the ground a slow hum of anticipation began to build – a living, breathing homage to Raymond Smith’s famous declaration that there was no sporting cathedral in the world like Thurles on a Munster championship Sunday. Fans tore their eyes away from the pitch to desperately check the time. Not long now. Yet in almost every blue-and-gold stomach a tight knot of icy apprehension defied the logic of time. ‘There isn’t time for Cork to come back – is there?’ A few fans were worried by the thought: Tipperary, after all, had themselves beaten Clare in the semi-final four weeks before, thanks to a last-minute Liam Maher goal after a penalty had been won by Nicky English. Ger Loughnane’s Clare were two points up and apparently destined for the Munster final, with the clock running down, when Tipp struck. But Tipp fans took heart from the sight of the Cork crowd, dozens of whom were now giving up the match for lost and streaming towards their cars and the train station in a bid to beat the traffic.

Who could have known in mid-March last year when we took the decision to shut our activities down, that the Covid challenge would still be front and centre as the summer of 2021 approaches? The best of the GAA shone as we grappled with profound changes to our lives and the supports provided by our club and county network to those who needed them most was both heartening and reassuring. Our games when they returned were a welcome tonic. The club championships and all of the activity that preceded them helped breathe life back into communities right across the GAA family. Similarly, in the darkest days of winter the inter-county games provided us with a focal point and a welcome distraction as we grew accustomed to supporting our players and teams from afar. In the coming weeks, the Allianz League games will come thick and fast and the interest and excitement will follow. We have shown flexibility in organising our competitions, most notably in football where again a straight knockout approach will apply. I would like to acknowledge the buy-in from everyone concerned in helping to make both last year and this season work, and I have no doubt that the entertainment value and profile of the games will be as high as ever.

    (1916-1965) Tony(Clonoulty-Rossmore Brennan & Tipperary) By Seamus J. King There are a number of poems and ballads written about the glorious period of Tipperary hurling, 1949-1951, and Tony Brennan features prominently in them. He is ‘a full back brave and strong’ in Champions of ’49. His defence of the Tipperary goalmouth and Tony Reddin is highlighted in Tipperary’s Hurling Men 1950: ‘Before you on the ramparts stands Brennan cool and still/Oh! Anthony, You’re grand, you’re brave – in peril we trust your skill.’ And Tipperary Fifty-One calls for ‘A cheer for Tony Brennan our peerless sound full back/Who kept the forwards all subdued and stemmed each fierce attack.’ Jimmy Finn, one of three survivors of these years – the other two being By Seamus King Mickey ‘The Rattler’ Byrne and Johnny Everard – recalls Tony as a father figure to John Doyle and himself in those years. He was protective of them, supportive of their efforts and a great leader who marshalled the defence. He was very protective of Tony Reddin and a great mentor of his in the early years. Jimmy uses the word ‘genius’ to describe his skill and his reading of the game. He was a great man to use a flick or a tip of the ball to get it out of the danger zone. Jimmy also recalls that Tony played during those great years under the severe handicap of an injured back and in many cases it was only his grit and determination enabled him to finish particularly tough games.

    ‘High Prestige’ The Story of Clare’s All Ireland Hurling Champions of 1914 Dr. Tomás Mac Conmara Produced as part of the ‘Champions Once More’ exhibition at Clare Museum 15 October 1914 ‘No Gael can afford to miss this game. In all likelihood it will mark a new departure for Irish hurling and should prove sensational in the extreme. A good hour of thrills is assured, sixty minutes of exhilarating hurling. Hurling is easily the most spectacular of games but such hurling as can be played by Clare and Leix will be a sight for the Gods. With special excursions at cheap rates from all parts of the country, he would be unwise who is found at home when the ball is thrown in for one of the greatest encounters ever staged’.1 22 October 1914 ‘Hurling champions of Ireland! Such is Clare’s proud boast after the final match which was played in Croke Memorial Park, Dublin in the presence of at least 15,000 spectators last Sunday. While it cannot be truthfully said that it was a first class match, still there were plenty of thrills and at every part of the contest, the boys from Clare mastered their doughty opponents from the Queen’s county and the score eloquently speaks for the superiority in the victors.
