We’ve been overwhelmed by the feedback from the first issue. Thank you to everyone who has taken time out to contact us. We plan to give this great game the publicity it deserves and we plan to do that with the help of our readers by using articles written by you. We will also take on board any suggestions and feedback on im- provements. Already, this week’s issue contains articles supplied to us by our readers in the last 7 days. Keep them coming! Once the ‘Vetting Bureau Act’ commences the law on vetting becomes formal and obligatory and all organisations and their volunteers or staff who with children and vulnerable adults will be legally obliged to have their personnel vetted. Such personnel must be vetted prior to the commencement of their work with their Association or Sports body. It is important to note that prior to the Act commencing that the Associations’ policy stated that all persons who in a role of responsibility work on our behalf with children and vulnerable adults has to be vetted. This applies to those who work with underage players. (The term ‘underage’ applies to any player who is under 18 yrs of age, regardless of what team with which they play). The introduction of compulsory vetting, on an All-Ireland scale through legislation, merely formalises our previous policies and practices. 1 When will the Act commence or come into operation? The Act is effectively agreed in law but has to be ‘commenced’ by the Minister for Justice and Equality who decides with his Departmental colleagues when best to commence all or parts of the legislation at any given time.

    FACULTY OF RADIOLOGISTS Dámh na Raideolaithe Annual Faculty Newsletter 2013/2014 Deans Introduction Retiring Dean’s don’t die: they just lose their Faculties. So I have always maintained. As I write this, it seems an appropriate time to take stock. As everyone before me has quite rightly said, the achievements of any of us are largely the results of the significant efforts of predecessors, and certainly this is the case for me. There is, I think, a continuum of progress. Often, in the eye of a particular storm, this isn’t apparent but the helicopter view does reveal method and evolution. I would hope, within this foreword, to explain to Fellows of the Faculty, what I think has been achieved over the last number of years, and what has been set in train for my worthy successor, Prof. Dermot Malone. Since I became a board member, my continuum of Deans looks like this: Lynn Johnston (2000-2002), David McInerney (2002-2004), Eamann Breatnach (2004-2006), Peter McCarthy (2006-2008), Risteard O’Laoide (2008-2010) and Adrian Brady (2010-2012). Improvement and iterative change is constant. If one takes a look for example at some recent years’ achievements: 2010 Faculty funding is streamed through the Medical Education and Training Unit of the HSE. The genesis of the Quality Assurance programme begins, as does the digitization of the FFR examination. All three are massive changes in how we function. 2011 In May 2011, the Professional Competence Scheme begins, and Ireland increases its educational significance in ESR, with Dr Breatnach becoming the Scientific Director of the European Board of Radiology for the European Diploma in Radiology, and Dr Brady its first Irish examiner.

In that way we can keep the resolution of the photos high and the size of both sections will be less than one megabyte. Part one is the magazine section and part two is the weekend roundup. The three Cup Finals in Croke Park provided some fine hurling but the crowd was just under 4,000 so it is probably back to the drawing board for those finals. Each needs to be played as a curtain raiser to a game from the Liam McCarthy Championship to create the right atmosphere. The Munster Final had patches of fine hurling and some fine individual displays but lacked the intensity of former classics. Both teams Tipperary and Waterford are continu - ing to make progress. Tipperary still look the best challenger to the champions but Wa - terford battled with heart and could yet make a final four berth. Best wishes ‘til next week from Hurling World.     Update from the Sports Office The Sports Bursary Scheme has gone from strength to strength.This year saw 105 bursaries presented to student athletes across 18 different sports. The presentation evening took place on the 30th of November with guest speaker Sue Ronan. Sue Ronan made her international debut against Sweden in 1988, she has gone on to manage the Irish U16, U18 and is currently Senior Women’s Soccer Manager. Athletics Club jumped straight into winter training. Resident coach and staff member Ian O’Sullivan is joined by Eamonn Flanagan (Events Coach) and Liam O’Reilly (Conditioning Coach). The club retained its U’23 County Title and came in 6th position in the Novice in Conna in October. The Road Relays in Maynooth took place in November with CIT sending 2 men’s teams and a full women’s team for the first time in a number of years. The Hockey & Golf teams dived straight into competition with both Varsities taking place in October. The golfers faced tough competition in Tramore drawing NUI Maynooth, UCD, and UCC in their pool. None the less, first year student, John Hickey, finished in the top 10 overall. The Hockey Club travelled to Galway with a strong Men’s and Ladies Squad. The Men’s team won the Mauritius Plate after a titanic battle against Trinity College Dublin. The women’s team drew a tough pool with UL, UCD, and UL. Today is such a day for both of our senior teams. We welcome Limerick today who are unbeaten in the league and rightly sit at the top of the table, however we have targeted maximum return from our home fixtures so today is a must win. Victory today will place us one point behind Limerick, heading into the last two games, away to Wicklow on 15th March and finishing at home against Waterford a week later on 22nd March. Second place in the league will secure a place in the league final at Croke Park. Limerick also still have to play Wexford who have won their last 3 games since losing to us on day one, so it is all to play for.
