    A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

In that way we can keep the resolution of the photos high and the size of both sections will be less than one megabyte. Part one is the magazine section and part two is the weekend roundup. The three Cup Finals in Croke Park provided some fine hurling but the crowd was just under 4,000 so it is probably back to the drawing board for those finals. Each needs to be played as a curtain raiser to a game from the Liam McCarthy Championship to create the right atmosphere. The Munster Final had patches of fine hurling and some fine individual displays but lacked the intensity of former classics. Both teams Tipperary and Waterford are continu - ing to make progress.     Christmas Greetings t seems such a short year since last Christmas and yet we are moving fast towards the IChristmas season again. The year gone by has been a year of high drama, beginning with the awful tsunami tragedy on St. Stephen’s Day. This has been followed by all the other tragedies of the year, the hurricanes in the US, the terrors in Baghdad, the earthquake in Pakistan and many more. I suppose one event that will always stand out in the minds of Catholics was the death of our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. His final illness and death brought home to us how he dignified pain and suffering by his endurance and acceptance. His funeral captured the attention of the world because he was respected by world leaders everywhere for standing up for what he believed. Then we had the election of Pope Benedict XVI and a new era in the church began. It is our prayer that the coming year will be a better year, that peace will take the place of war and violence around the world, and that people everywhere will escape natural disasters and flu pandemics. As always, I avail of the pages of Annagh Magazine to wish you all, on my own behalf and on behalf of Fr. Burke, a very happy and holy Christmas and every blessing and every happiness in the New Year. Wherever you are, at home or abroad, you will be remembered in our Masses on Christmas Day.     Mick Hennessy Mick gave great service too to the GAA as a referee taking charge of games throughout the county and at inter- The hurling grounds at Ballyhickey – Hennessy Memorial county level. He was a great communicator and anyone who knew him would say he Mick will long be remembered by people of this parish was surely one of nature’s gentlemen. and beyond as a warm, friendly patient man. He was an outstanding athlete and trainer, who advised, coached As a county player Mick had few equals, he was fast and motivated players in his quiet but confident and strong and very skilful. Mick first played for Clare in the competent manner. He was a man of great passion and 1933/34 League campaign and continued to play for the emotion but with a most forgiving and non-judgemental county for ten years. “A dynamo of energy in the scoring nature – a much loved man. area” (Clare Champion report 1941), Mick scored three goals against Cork in the second half of the Munster Championship in 1936.
