Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document.*** Abstract: The discovery of statistical laws of heredity by Gregor Mendel was an important advance in biological science. However, Mendel's opinion that the entire character was transmitted was not derived from his data and instead reflected prior beliefs outside the domain of science. It is argued here that Mendel, a monk and later abbot of an Augustine monastery, was influenced by St. Augustine's theory of divine creation of the rationes seminales which specified the form for all future beings in great detail. Furthermore, the continued adherence to genetic determinism among contemporary scientists is largely, despite strong evidence supporting a developmental systems or dialectical view of heredity and development. Considering intellectual and political aspects of scientific materialism, Monist and New Atheism movements’ programs as well as the historical context of their development a number of structural similarities is being drawn. Notably, the Darwinian theory of evolution in monistic dysteleological interpretation represents the main rhetoric weapon of atheistic science popularizers against opponents. Also, science is employed as a tool of ‘freethought’ communities’ formation and campaigning for irreligious rights and against creationism’s intellectual expansion. However, if earlier atheistic science popularizers were quite explicit on their world change ambition, contemporaries show no interest to author some new science-inspired worldview systems or political projects. Article Abraham Trembley's Strategy of Generosity and the Scope of Celebrity in the Mid-Eighteenth Century RATCLIFF, Marc Abstract Historians of science have long believed that Abraham Trembley's celebrity and impact were attributable chiefly to the incredible regenerative phenomena demonstrated by the polyp, which he discovered in 1744, and to the new experimental method he devised to investigate them. This essay shows that experimental method alone cannot account for Trembley's success and influence; nor are the marvels of the polyp sufficient to explain its scientific and cultural impact. Experimental method was but one element in a new conception of the laboratory that called for both experimental and para-experimental skills whose public availability depended on a new style of communication. The strategy of generosity that led Trembley to dispatch polyps everywhere enabled experimental naturalist laboratories to spread throughout Europe, and the free circulation of living objects for scientific research led practitioners to establish an experimental field distinct from mechanical physics. The Committee appointed by the Royal Society to direct the publication of the Philosophical Transactions take this opportunity to acquaint the public that it fully appears, as well from the Council-books and Journals of the Society as from repeated declarations which have been made in several former , that the printing of them was always, from time to time, the single act of the respective Secretaries till the Forty-seventh Volume; the Society, as a Body, never interesting themselves any further in their publication than by occasionally recommending the revival of them to some of their Secretaries, when, from the particular circumstances of their affairs, the Transactions had happened for any length of time to be intermitted. Fox In this report, we elaborate on a letter that Spallanzani wrote to Bonnet reporting his findings on regeneration in worms, snails, tadpoles, and salamanders. The letter (original in French and translated in English; see Supplementary Material, which is available online) was written to discuss whether or not regeneration in these animals supports Bonnet’s theory on germs. The letter includes several drawings by Spallanzani, which were not published in the Prodromo, his book on Animal Reproduction. Spallanzani made important observations, which he described with considerable detail, but overall he was unable to confidently support Bonnet’s theory. This letter reflects the way of thinking in the 18th century that shaped the important scientific fields of regeneration and reproduction. Nyhart* *Program in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology, University of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI 53706, [email protected] ABSTRACT: How do the discourses of biology and politics interact? This article uses the case of Carl Vogt (1817-1895), a German zoologist, physiologist, and radical political activist in the German revolutions of 1848-49, to examine the traffic across the discourses before, during, and after the revolutions. It argues that the key metaphors of the “state-as-organism” (used largely by political theorists) and the “organism-as-state” (used mainly by biologists) did different work for each group in the 1840s and 1850s. Vogt himself was the rare individual who actively played with both metaphors, in defense of both his radical political views and his materialist biology. I examine especially closely his scholarly biological studies of siphonophores—marine invertebrates that looked like single organisms but were generally agreed to be collections of individuals (“states” or “colonies”), and his use of this creature for political satire after the revolution failed. More broadly, while attention to the organism-as-state peaked in the early1850s, the state-as-organism metaphor gained new possibilities. Whereas earlier it generally referred to an idealist or “ethical” meaning of “organism,” in the 1850s a new, “realistic” interpretation came onto the political scene, bearing a more strictly biological meaning of the term. The article ends with a brief analysis of the asymmetries between the two metaphors and their positions within nineteenth-century German natural science and politics. -

Book Chapter Abraham Trembley's impact on the construction of microscopes RATCLIFF, Marc, FOURNIER, Marian Abstract Famous for his discovery on hydra, Abraham Trembley was also much interested in the devices he used for his scientific investigation. Particularly, he conceived instruments that could best fill the needs of his research, among them, microscopes. When in London in 1745, he got in touch with the instrument maker John Cuff and asked him to build a microscope with an eyepiece that could move in all directions. In other words, Trembley invented aquatic movement and Cuff made the instrument for him. However, Trembley never claimed his invention, therefore we used a contextual approach to reconstruct this story. We investigated his relationships with the world of practitioners, his role as an agent for buying instruments for his patron William Bentinck, and, through his unknown correspondence with Martin Folkes P.R.S., we could identify his authorship with certainty. As a consequence, the microscope he invented is the ancestor of the socalled Cuff-Ellis microscope, that originated in Trembley’s model. Reference RATCLIFF, Marc, FOURNIER, Marian. The extraordinary personal qualities of character, as well as the talents and attainments of its former occu- pant, render such a task indeed almost impossible. We, in common with all prominent scientific associations of the country, sorely miss in our meetings the genial countenance, the quick, intellectual eye, the animated words of a colleague who was one of the framers of this Academy, and who never, to his last hour, ceased to be its truest friend and one of the most active contributors. Such indeed was our lamented Loi'i.s AGASSIZ.
