Studies in Classicism and Romanticism has come into being as a result of the commitment of a group of scholars who are especially interested in English literature and culture from the mid-seventeenth to the mid- nineteenth century. A Case for Hard-heartedness: Clarissa, Indifferency, Impersonality Wendy Anne Lee !"#$%!&$ Reading Clarissa’s hard-heartedness through the lens of indif- fer ency clari!es what is at stake in her still-puzzling and multi- layered defection. "e phenomenon of hard-heartedness in Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa is here re-evaluated through John Locke’s concept of “indi#er ency” and through contemporary theories of impersonality. Beginning with an account of the novel’s reception in which readers were unnerved by Clarissa’s refusal to marry her rapist, I locate an important counter-response in Anna Laetitia Barbauld, who valued precisely the quality of impassivity in Richardson’s heroine. In eighteenth-century thought, a similar form of disen gagement is articulated by Locke’s notion of indi#erency, an impartiality that risks alienation for the sake of understanding and autonomy. By featuring an im personal Clarissa, I show how the novel’s theory of character, in which a hidden interiority under writes personhood, contains its own critique of a depth- model of psychology. I conclude by examin ing a phase of Clarissa’s narrative not o$en discussed: her life as an urban rape sur vivor, an incarnation that o#ers the most chal leng ing as well as the most promising possibilities for the impersonal person in the novel. !'$()% Wendy Anne Lee is an assistant professor in the English Depart- ment at Yale University. 'A Copious Collection of Newspapers' John Nichols and his Collection of Newspapers, Pamphlets and News Sheets, 1760–1865 Julian Pooley, University of Leicester Introduction John Nichols (1745–1826) was a leading London printer who inherited the business of his former master and partner, William Bowyer the Younger, in 1777, and rose to be Master of the Stationers’ Company in 1804.1 He was also a prominent literary biographer and antiquary whose publications, including biographies of Hogarth and Swift, and a county history of Leicestershire, continue to inform and inspire scholarship today.2 Much of his research drew upon his vast collection of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century newspapers. This essay, based on my ongoing work on the surviving papers of the Nichols family, will trace the history of John Nichols’ newspaper collection. It will show how he acquired his newspapers, explore their influence upon his research and discuss the changing fortunes of his collection prior to its acquisition by the Bodleian Library in 1865. 1 For useful biographical studies of John Nichols, see Albert H. The Life of the Female Mind: Hester Mulso Chapone and the Gendered Rhetoric of Experience Bethany Mannon Abstract: This article studies the writings of Hester Mulso Chapone (1727-1801) a prolific member of the late-eighteenth century Bluestocking circle. Working within genres traditionally available to women, most notably the conversational rhetoric of letters, Chapone advocates for an expanded social role and rhetorical education for young women. These letters later circulated publicly as Letters on Filial Obedience (1751) and Letters on the Improvement of the Mind (1773). Chapone’s participation in a tradition of feminist writing deserves attention be- cause of her success foregrounding personal experience as a source of authority and deploying personal writing to persuade, inform, and confront prevailing power structures. Keywords: Conversational Rhetoric, Feminist Rhetoric, Life Writing, Bluestockings Hester Mulso Chapone (1727-1801) wrote prolifically in the eighteenth century and, together with the writers Elizabeth Montagu, Catharine Macaulay, Charlotte Lennox, Elizabeth Carter, Sarah Scott, Hannah More, and Frances Burney, influenced British intellectual culture. A member of this Bluestocking generation, Chapone was known during her life for her essays, letters, conver- sation, poetry, and advice on the education of young women. She maintained a reputation as an intellectual moralist into the nineteenth century, as her writings continued to be widely printed and read. Chapone worked within the genres of letters and conduct books—traditionally accessible to women—but expanded those genres to confront eighteenth-century notions of virtue and education. Manuel Portela A PORTRAIT OF THE AUTHOR AS AN AUTHOR Abstract The growth of the literary market in the eighteenth century changed concepts of authorship. Portrait conventions were also used to frame authorial personality. By looking at pictorial representations of men and women authors, in paintings and prints, I identify conflicting images of authorship. Idealised representations of the author as gentleman or lady are contrasted with images of the violence of market forces. Polite restraint of the self-conscious individual genius has to face the unruly passions and interests that characterise the new social relations of literary production.1 Resumo O crescimento do mercado literário no século XVIII alterou a concepção da autoria. As convenções do retrato foram também usadas para definir a personalidade autoral. Através da observação de representações de autores e autoras, em pinturas e gravuras, identifico imagens contraditórias da autoria. Representações idealizadas do autor enquanto cavalheiro ou enquanto senhora são contrastadas com imagens da violência das forças do mercado. O autodomínio polido do génio individual tem de enfrentar as paixões e interesses desregrados que caracterizam as novas relações sociais de produção. Modern Aids to Bibliographical Research DAVID FOXON THE TITLE ASSIGNED to this article is an ample one and, of necessity, the author has concentrated on the general sub jects which seem to be the most significant. Those developments which affect particular periods are covered in preceding articles. In general, the modern aids discussed here are only developments of earlier tech niques. If R. B. McKerrow were to survey the bibliographical scene today he would see little that was not implicit in his own work. The Hinman collating machine must take first place, not only be cause it is the one piece of equipment developed purely for biblio graphical purposes (and a very impressive and rather expensive ma chine, too) but also because it was developed to study the text of Shakespeare, a study which has inspired much of the most brilliant bibliographical work in the English-speaking countries. In the early seventeenth century it was the practice when a form of type had been set up to pull a proof (and perhaps a revise), but it was often impossible in those small printing shops to keep type stand ing and pressmen idle while the proof was being read. Accordingly the pressmen started printing-off sheets while the proof was read, stopped while the necessary corrections were made, and then printed-off the remainder of the sheets. As a result, only some copies of the sheet would be correct, and since this could be true of many or all the gather ings, which were assembled at random into books, the likelihood of any copy containing all the text in its corrected state is small. -

Cam- bridge: Cambridge University Press, 1992. xxiv, 500 pp.; £65 (cloth). IsBN o-521-308ol-I. This is the first volume of a projected three-volume history of the university press at Cambridge. Its author, David McKitterick, librarian of Trinity College and a leading scholar in the history of the book, takes the press from a very modest foundation in the sixteenth century to its thriving activity as a busy academic publisher by the end of the seventeenth century, just short of the age of Richard Bentley. A university press in England in the early modern period was quite a different thing from a university press today. The university's right to publish books was established by the charter of I534 (transcribed with slight inaccuracies on pp. 35-6, if figure I is indeed the original). Yet generally the university kept a distance from the day-to-day activities of those individuals who had been given the right to print and sell books within the community, but who in themselves were not really 'university publishers.' The work they produced ranged widely: academic pamphlets and Latin verse miscellanies, printed forms, manuals of logic, editions of the Bible, grammar texts, psalm books, books of English poetry (Herbert's Temple), even almanacs and other popular publications, and now and then what we would today call a scholarly publication, such as the splendidly produced Bede edited by Whelock. By the end of the period surveyed, the press had become very active with scholarly books, though the almanacs were still crucial for commer- cial survival. -
Pamela, Anti-Pamela, and the Tradition of Women's Amatory Fiction

Student, Graduate Institute of Foreign Languages and Literatures National Taiwan University ABSTRACT The publication of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela in November 1740 was an immediate success, and the frenzy over the immensely popular novel quickly developed into an unprecedented sensational event commonly called “the Pamela controversy.” Among the very first literary responses to the Pamela vogue are Henry Fielding’s Shamela (April 1741) and Eliza Haywood’s Anti-Pamela (June 1741), published within less than two months from each other. A closer look at the three novels, however, reveals that Haywood’s Anti-Pamela is curiously closer in style to Richardson’s Pamela than to Fielding’s Shamela, despite the fact that both Fielding and Haywood aim at attacking Richardson with their parodic novels. As one of the first attempts to deal with the intertextual influences between Richardson’s Pamela and Haywood’s much neglected work Anti-Pamela, in this essay I argue that the similarity in style between the two texts comes not from Haywood’s imitating Richardson, but rather from Richardson’s incorporating elements from the tradition of women’s amatory fiction, of which Haywood’s works in the 1720s constitute a significant part. In other words, despite his consistent disparagement of such writings by women as “influenza,” Richardson’s text betrays his indebtedness to Haywood, and in composing Anti-Pamela, Haywood does not depart much from her earlier novelistic style, thus leading to the false impression that Haywood is following Richardson in style.
