Dr. William Long 28 April 2001 Karen Brewster Interviewer (Begin Tape 1
Dr. William Long 28 April 2001 Karen Brewster Interviewer (Begin Tape 1 - Side A) (000) KB: This is Karen Brewster and today is Saturday, April 28th, 2001. I'm here at the home of William Long in Palmer, Alaska, and we're going to be talking about his Antarctic and Arctic experiences and career. So, thank you very much for having me here. WL: Well, it's great to have you here Karen. It's an opportunity that I'm happy to participate in. KB: Well, good. And this is for the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. You very nicely wrote everything down and started to answer the questions, but I'm going to go through it so we can talk about things. WL: And I won't have those in my hand, so you can compare my answers to your questions. KB: So, let's just start with when and where you were born and a little bit about your childhood. 2 WL: I was born August 18th, 1930, in Minot, North Dakota. My father was a schoolteacher and he had taken his first job at Belva, which is near Minot, and it was that year that I was born. It was one of the coldest years they had experienced and perhaps that influences my interest in cold areas. But, my mother has told me that it was the year that it was below 50 below there and the cows froze in the field across from the home they lived in. We only lived there one year and from that point, we moved to California when I was one year old, and essentially I was raised in California, until I began adult life. -
Introduction
Introduction Dear Future McAuliffe Scholars, This anthology is a collection of narratives written by the sixth graders at Christa McAuliffe Charter School; the same sixth graders who were last year in your shoes. These narratives are about the transition from elementary school to McAuliffe. This collection displays many different stories about students joining a new community. It is made interesting by the diversity all of the scholars bring. Throughout the fall trimester, students have been working on crafting their narratives while being guided by various learning targets. The long term target students have been working on is, “I can craft a narrative about my place in the McAuliffe community.” As we crafted our narratives, we learned to use transition words and figurative language to enrich our work. The purpose of this expedition was to build a stronger community and make connections to other people. We hope that the readers of this anthology will know now that joining a new community may be hard at first, but “bridges” are built more quickly than you may expect. We hope that after reading this anthology you will feel more excited to come to McAuliffe. Sincerely, Class of 2017 Introduction by: Ashna Hille, Alexa Hughes, Marian Rookey, Laszlo Bernstein, Stephen Eckelkamp, and Daniel Xu 1 2 This anthology is dedicated to: The McAuliffe Admissions team, and all students of McAuliffe past, present, and future. 3 4 Left to Right: Will D., Dasan J., Terrence O., Peter M. 5 Dasan J. SPED Newsletter Volume 4
COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Office of Special Education 417 W. Alondra Blvd., Compton, CA 90220 PARENT DIGITAL NEWSLETTER April 10, 2020 Volume 4 DISTRICT UPDATES Statement from President Micah Ali and Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley Regarding School Site Closures Statement from President Micah Ali and Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley Regarding School Site Closures In light of recent guidance from local and state agencies related to the unique health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees at the April 8, 2020 Board of Trustees Meeting made a decision to extend school site closure for the remainder end of the school year, unless further and different guidance is received from State and local officials. Although school sites and facilities are closed, learning will continue. We are grateful and proud of the tremendous work done to ensure that students have access to instruction. We are pleased to report that we are entering into Spring Break having ensured that almost 90% of our students have access to learning technology and over 90% of our teachers have established virtual classrooms for students. We are also continuing the important work of providing free breakfast and lunch meals to youth throughout the community, which will resume after Spring Break. Finally, we will be working to identify options for graduation celebrations and other culmination activities that are within social distancing requirements. We know that anything less than traditional ceremonies will be a great disappointment to many, and we too are disappointed that alternative arrangements will likely be required. In the meantime, we will be developing a refund process for those students who paid for certain senior activities. -
