Genetics of Sesame Street Characters Table (Page 3) to Determine the Possible Genotypes for Each of the Sesame Street Characters Based on Each Character’S Phenotypes Genetics of Sesame Street Name __________________ Period __________________ Introduction Much is known about the genetics of Sesamus muppetis. Karyotyping reveals that Sesame Street characters have six chromosomes: two homologous pairs and one pair of sex chromosomes. Chromosome pair #1 is the largest and has a centrally placed centromere. Chromosome pair #2 is much shorter with the centromere at one end. Sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes, just as it is in the related species, Homo Sapiens. Through the process of gene mapping, geneticists have found the specific locations of the genes for eye shape, nose color, lip color, body color, and hair type. By observing the offspring of many crosses, geneticists also have determined the types of inheritance that several of these genes exhibit. Objective In this lab you will determine the genotypes of six Sesame Street characters, and choose two individuals to cross and produce a male & female child. The ability to do monohybrid crosses and predict probability will be essential. This project will be worked on primarily in class. Requirements 1. Completion of “Phenotype & Genotype Table” 5 pts. a. For each Sesame Street character, describe each of the traits on the table on Page 3. b. Use the Genetics of Sesame Street Characters Table (Page 3) to determine the possible genotypes for each of the Sesame Street characters based on each character’s phenotypes. We will use this information to fill in both genotype and phenotype on our table. 2. Completion of “Muppet Mate’s Characteristics” 5 pts. 3. Completion of “Punnett Squares & Probabilities” 10 pts. Use the six Punnett Squares to show the possible outcomes for male and female characters in your project. The probabilities, expressed as ratios or percents, must be listed for each possible trait. 4. Completion of “Muppet Babies’ Characteristics and Sketch” 10 pts. 5. Family Portrait 20 pts. Create a family portrait of your male, female, and both offspring. The portrait should match the genetic description of your characters. • Why the Cookie Monster Should Never Become the Veggie Monster… a Classical Argument
Why the Cookie Monster should never become the Veggie Monster… A Classical Argument “Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?” Hearing the lyrics and the tune seems nostalgic and reminds us of simpler times: our childhood. While Sesame Street may only be intended for three or four year olds, Jim Henson’s ragtag group of puppets has made a mark on America’s pop culture over the years. We see fashion retailers selling t-shirts with the face of Elmo or Cookie Monster upon them and we have chuckled at the various parody videos of Sesame Street characters on YouTube. However, after such a long legacy, can you imagine if our beloved characters were changed? What if your own child was subjected to the image of Veggie Monster instead of Cookie Monster? In light of recent struggle to fight childhood obesity, many have advocated to change the Cookie Monster character to the Veggie Monster in order to encourage more children to eat healthy. I propose, while their intention may be well mannered, Sesame Street, and more specifically Cookie Monster is not the right avenue to express these opinions and the Cookie Monster should remain the Cookie Monster. While we have only discussed the general popularity of Sesame Street, we have yet to even discuss Cookie Monster, himself. Cookie Monster with his voracious appetite proves to be adorable and often, provides comic relief on the show. Cookie Monster along with his pals Big Bird and Elmo has become one of the most popular icons of the show.

Columbia Business School Student Research Paper Sesame Workshop: Going Global with Muppets Jordan Bliss MBA ’06 Zachary Block MBA ’06 Matthew Hochbrueckner MBA ’06 Todd Riffey MBA ’06 © 2006 by The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York. All rights reserved CHAZEN WEB JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS www.gsb.columbia.edu/chazen/webjournal Executive Summary After launching the television program Sesame Street in the 1960s as an educational tool to help underprivileged children in inner cities in the United States, Sesame Workshop quickly set its eyes on international markets to expand its reach and grow its revenues. Over the years, Sesame has used its well-known brand and popular characters to enter new markets, often through distribution deals and partnerships with local broadcasters. During its early expansion, Sesame producers merely dubbed the show into other languages. Increasingly, however, Sesame Workshop has partnered with local producers to create new shows using Sesame characters and/or new characters to appeal to foreign audiences. Two case studies on market adaptation—Kosovo and Japan—examine the steps that Sesame Workshop has undertaken in its global expansion. Today, multiple versions of Sesame Street are on the air in more than 120 countries. The Workshop has developed operating structures to match its strategies for approaching a variety of local markets. The following key learnings are considered applicable across a variety of production projects: • Leverage the brand. Firms must understand the strengths and weaknesses of their brand and use them appropriately. Sesame Street is a world-renowned brand that the Workshop leverages to gain access and resources in international markets.
