College, Barasat, Kolkata- 700124, West Bengal, India *Author for Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT Epicalyx, staminal tube, stigma and trichome morphological characters have been used to characterize some common members of Malvaceae s.s. These characters have been analyzed following a recent molecular phylogenetic classification of Malvaceae s.s. Stigmatic character is effective for segregation of the tribe Gossypieae from other tribes. But precise distinction of other two studied tribes, viz. Hibisceae and Malveae on the basis of this character proved to be insufficient. Absence of epicalyx in Malachra has indicated an independent evolutionary event within Hibisceae. Distinct H-shaped trichome of Malvastrum has pointed out its isolated position within Malveae. Staminal tube morphological similarities of Abutilon and Sida have suggested their closeness. A key to the genera has been provided for identification purpose. Ruter University of Georgia, Dept. of Horticulture, Tifton, GA 31793 [email protected] Index Words: beautyberry, species evaluation, ornamental plant breeding Significance to Industry: There is a great deal of available Callicarpa L. germplasm that has yet to be utilized by the nursery industry in the U.S. Taxa currently being evaluated are likely to have potential as breeding material or direct commercial marketability. With new breeding material and selections for introduction the number of beautyberry cultivars for use in southeastern gardens has the potential to expand greatly. Nature of Work: Callicarpa L. is a genus of ~150 species of shrubs and trees distributed throughout the world including warm-temperate and tropical America, SE Asia, Malaysia, Pacific Islands, and Australia (5) with the greatest concentration of species found in SE Asia, specifically the Philippine Islands (1). Of the New World species the highest concentration occurs in Cuba, with ~20 native species (1). There are currently four species commonly found in cultivation in the U.S.: C. americana L., C. bodinieri Lév., C. dichotoma (Lour.)K.Koch, and C. japonica Thunb. with a limited number of varieties or cultivars of each to choose from (3). Beautyberries, desired primarily for their handsome berries produced in fall, have been selected for white-fruiting varieties, finer textured varieties, increased berry production, and variegated foliage. -
The Paradigm of Hakka Women in History
DOI: 10.4312/as.2021.9.1.31-64 31 The Paradigm of Hakka Women in History Sabrina ARDIZZONI* Abstract Hakka studies rely strongly on history and historiography. However, despite the fact that in rural Hakka communities women play a central role, in the main historical sources women are almost absent. They do not appear in genealogy books, if not for their being mothers or wives, although they do appear in some legends, as founders of villages or heroines who distinguished themselves in defending the villages in the absence of men. They appear in modern Hakka historiography—Hakka historiography is a very recent discipline, beginning at the end of the 19th century—for their moral value, not only for adhering to Confucian traditional values, but also for their endorsement of specifically Hakka cultural values. In this paper we will analyse the cultural paradigm that allows women to become part of Hakka history. We will show how ethical values are reflected in Hakka historiography through the reading of the earliest Hakka historians as they depict- ed Hakka women. Grounded on these sources, we will see how the narration of women in Hakka history has developed until the present day. In doing so, it is necessary to deal with some relevant historical features in the construc- tion of Hakka group awareness, namely migration, education, and women narratives, as a pivotal foundation of Hakka collective social and individual consciousness. According to the report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO), approximately 13 million hectors of global forests have been lost annually due to forest land conversion to other land uses, forest fires and natural disasters, while reforestation and natural regeneration account for an increase of approx. 7.8 million hectors of forest cover. This means the net loss of global forest is estimated at 5.2 million hectors. Adverse impacts of forest conversion to farmland can be minimized as far as the land is properly used and managed in a sustainable manner. However, in some cases, problem soils are exposed and abandoned as degraded land. Deforestation by mining is a big issue these years. Problem soils such as strong acid soils and/or too much heavy metal soils appear at the ex-mining areas. In some cases it is too difficult to reforestate. -

Postgraduate College Abbottabad, 3 Department of Botany, University of Peshawar Abstract Pollen morphology of four species and three cultivars belonging to genus Hibiscus of family Malvaceae from North West Frontier Province (N.W.F.P.) of Pakistan were examined by light and scanning electron microscope. Pollen morphology of the family is fairly uniform. Pollen grains are generally radially symmetrical apolar, mostly spheroidal to oblate-spheroidal, pantoporate or polyporate. Tectum uniformly echinate, medium to finely perforated, or punctate with granules or scabrae in between spines. Introduction The family Malvaceae comprising of c. 88 genera and c. 2, 3000 species are distributed in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions (Willis, 1973; Mabberley, 1987). In Pakistan it is represented by 19 genera with 94 specific and intraspecific taxa (Abedin, 1979). Palynologically, Malvaceae is stenopalynous family and pollen characters in this family are more or less uniform. Culhane & Blackmore (1988) divided the family into six pollen type, based on number of apertures, grains diameter and spinular morphology. This is also supported by Christensen (1986) that the generic delimitation based on pollen morphology is difficult in this family. However, Saad (1960) considered that that the pollen morphology in the family Malvaceae is quite distinctive which could apparently distinguish between the genera. Whereas pollen morphology of the family Malvaceae has been studied by Master (1874), Lang (1937), Sayeeduddin et al (1942), Erdtman (1952), Nair (1958, 1960, 1962), Saad (1960), Chadhuri (1965), Fryxell & Hashmi (1971) and El Naggar (2004), but the most comprehensive study of the Malvaceae pollen is that of Christensen (1986). -

Althea (Rose of Sharon)
Common Name: Althea (Rose of Sharon) Scientific Name: Hibiscus syriacus Order: Malvales Family: Malvaceae Description Althea is a deciduous plant. It has a summer flowering period in which it bears pleasing hollyhock flowers well into the fall. This is a vigorous, upright growing deciduous vase-shaped shrub which can be either left to grow in multi-stemmed shape or thinned to a single stem small tree. Leaves are 3-lobed, medium green in color with a coarse texture. From early summer through the fall it bears very showy hollyhock-like-petaled flowers which can be 3” in diameter. Flowers vary in color but are often pink with red centers. A notable white stamen forms in the center of the flower. Growth Habit Althea is an easy-to-grow shrub. It grows with a height increase of 13-24” per year. The growth rate ranges from slow to moderate, and transplanting is easy. Hardiness Zone(s) Althea grows in U.S Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 5 (UK) but is also able to grow in the zones 5b-9a, as well as higher zones where temperatures are not extreme. Culture Althea can grow and survive in full sun, partial sun, or even partial shade. It has certain soil tolerances and soils can vary from sand, loam, clay; acidic; occasionally wet; well-drained. It also has a moderate tolerance to drought. It can grow in suitable pH; the range that is tolerated by the althea varies from 3.7-7.3. Prune the althea in late winter or early spring to promote the new growth and maintain larger flower size. -
