WAM acquired the highly significant collection in 2014 from the Higgins Armory Museum and plans to design an innovative installation, consisting partly of open storage, with emphasis on accessibility, both physical and intellectual. The grant would help fund preparatory activities including specialist review of the collection, brainstorming by regional academics and educators to suggest possible interpretive approaches, and consultation with interpretation and design specialists to turn these ideas into concrete plans for a compelling and engaging installation that will appeal to diverse audiences. The installation’s core humanities concepts will be the contrast between the superficial purpose of the objects and their actual complex functions, and the meaning of their enduring power as symbols today when they are no longer in actual use.
