HARLAN PHILLIPS PL: PIETRO LAZZARI HP: I think while we have the opportunity it's, I think, important to assess in a way what one begins with. You have at least, you know, a dual cultural view, more, probably, so what did you fall heir to in the way of luggage and baggage that you've carried? PL: Well, I do believe I was quite lucky, if we can put it this way, I was born in the last century, 1898, in Rome and not from a family were cultural marked point was strong. My father was very inventive himself, he could draw horses. He loved to walk long distances. I remember as a young boy we used to walk outside the gates of Rome in Via Solaria or toward Ostia, and he was not a very tall man but while he walked, and while he talked he grew, I thought he was very tall, and he was inspired, his chest forward because he was the bandolier, which is a sort of an elite corps in the Italian army and he volunteered very young. So going back to our walks, he was familiar with the Roman ruins and frescoes in churches particularly those churches on the outskirts of Rome. -

Date 1929-2018 (bulk 1936-1942) Extent 290 cubic feet (734 boxes); approximately 29,000 digital files Abstract This collection documents the activities of the Index of American Design, a Federal Art Project to preserve and document the development of American folk and decorative arts from the colonial period through 1900 while providing relief work to unemployed artists, researchers, and photographers during the Great Depression. Materials consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, lists, data sheets, publications, photograph prints and negatives, color notes. Historical Note Created in 1935, the Index of American Design (Index) was a program in the Fine Arts Divisions of the Federal Art Project (FAP) under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Index project had three objectives: to employ and maintain the skills of artists who found themselves unemployed during the depression years; to preserve America’s artistic and cultural heritage by documenting the development of arts and crafts in different parts of the country; and to create a series of portfolios from the Index watercolor renderings that would serve as a permanent guide for artists, scholars, and the public. The initial idea for the Index project began with discussions between Romana Javitz, head of the New York Public Library’s Picture Collection, and artists who were conducting research in the collection for WPA projects. -

One Island - One Book The Female Persuasion Program Guide For Libraries 2019 Author Meg Wolitzer will be appearing at the Long Island Reads Selection Award event on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 2pm at Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library. The Female Persuasion offers many exciting programming opportunities, highlighting women’s achievements, contributions, rights, status and history while embracing the book’s themes, which range from mentorship, political power, activism, making college affordable and grief, to an appreciation of the longevity of the turtle, as well as visits to the park-like campus of Princeton University, revered for its architectural and natural beauty. DRAMATIC PRESENTATIONS The Female Persuasion A one-hour program in the style of a radio drama featuring excerpts from the book. Wagner Collection ______Of American History and Literature
The Wagner Collection ____ _____ of American History and Literature 1 Collected in memory of Bondurant Paul Wagner (1889-1937), journalist and booklover, and his only child, Vera Henrietta Wagner (1917-2000), by Katherine Melissa Witcher, his grand-daughter and her daughter. 1 The book plate used for the collection is an adaptation of the original, commissioned by Paul Wagner for his daughter Vera on her 12th birthday (1929) in Houston, Texas, where she grew up. It is found on most of the books in the collection. 2 Paul Wagner, of German lineage, was born in LaBelle, Missouri, the only son of Oliver Cromwell Wagner and the grandson of Chief Justice David Wagner of the Supreme Court of Missouri. The great hero of his youth was Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain), a neighbor from the nearby town of Hannibal, and Paul became a writer for this reason. Paul’s first career post was as Chief Editor of the Shreveport Examiner, Louisiana, and thereafter he became a full-time oil and gas journalist, reporting on most of the early oil discoveries in the Greater Southwest, Mexico and Central America. He became editor-in-chief of the Petroleum News, a position which he held until his early death. This major publication continues today. His own book collection was large and varied, and much was imported from England. Vera, inheriting from her father the whole of his collections of books and paintings, carried these with her throughout her life, until dispersal to state libraries, art galleries and museums – mostly in Texas, where she died. -
