Microsoft Mesh: Un Futuro in Realtà Mista Microsoft Mesh: un futuro in realtà mista di Gianluca Riccio – La scorsa settimana Alex Kipman di Microsoft, l’inventore di Kinect e HoloLens, è apparso nel salotto di alcuni suoi colleghi per mostrare loro meduse e squali. Non è stato uno strano sogno, ma un incontro in realtà mista, reso possibile dalla nuova piattaforma Microsoft Mesh. Si indossa un auricolare HoloLens 2, si entra in una sala riunioni virtuale e l’interlocutore appare accanto ai nostri mobili di casa: è la visione di Microsoft per il futuro di VR e AR o, come sarebbe meglio dire, realtà mista. Mesh è una piattaforma collaborativa che consente a chiunque di condividere esperienze virtuali su una varietà di dispositivi. “Questo è stato il sogno della realtà mista, l’idea fin dall’inizio”, spiega Kipman. “Puoi effettivamente sentirti come se fossi nello stesso posto con qualcuno che condivide contenuti con te. O puoi teletrasportarti da diversi dispositivi di realtà mista ed essere presente con le persone anche quando non sei fisicamente insieme a loro.” In una prima fase, Microsoft Mesh presenterà le persone come avatar virtuali presi dal social network AltspaceVR che Microsoft ha acquisito nel 2017. Più avanti, il software Microsoft supporterà ciò che Microsoft chiama “holoportation”, che consentirà alle persone di apparire come se stessero in uno spazio virtuale. Durante una riunione durata circa un’ora, Kipman è apparso accanto ai colleghi come avatar e ha iniziato a “portare” ai colleghi degli oggetti in realtà mista (nello specifico meduse e squali virtuali). Era possibile rimodellarli, restituirli o semplicemente osservarli. Un primo esempio di interazione collettiva in realtà mista, per dirla in breve. Immaginate un futuro con tecnologie del genere ben sviluppate. Un tecnico potrà guidare i clienti nella riparazione di un oggetto che hanno in casa, senza andare fisicamente lì. Ingegneri, architetti e progettisti che lavorano insieme a modelli 3D senza trovarsi necessariamente nello stesso luogo. E le riunioni di lavoro in presenza? Cose da riservare solo alle grandissime occasioni: per la quotidianità sarà sufficiente indossare il visore e “sedersi” in un ambiente di realtà mista. Pochi dettagli si frappongono tra noi e un futuro in realtà mista, ma sono tutt’altro che trascurabili. Anzitutto il prezzo: dispositivi come Hololens di Microsoft sono ancora fuori dalla portata del pubblico, per quello che offrono anche in termini di coinvolgimento. Servirà anche molto lavoro da parte degli sviluppatori per creare applicazioni di realtà mista capaci di fare breccia presso il grande pubblico. Per questo Microsoft si sta attrezzando però, con tre pezzi da 90: il regista James Cameron, Niantic (gli sviluppatori di Pokémon Go) e il co-fondatore del Cirque du Soleil. Sono stati tra i protagonisti della demo che Kipman ha mostrato ai colleghi. I concerti virtuali? Certo, una possibilità. Così come moltissimi altri sviluppi che possono andare dalla sanità all’edilizia, dalla psicoterapia al turismo. Ora dipenderà dalla capacità delle aziende: commercializzare modalità di lavoro e di gioco ibride potrebbe cambiare le regole, mentre il mondo esce dalla pandemia per entrare in una nuova realtà.
