Tanto el partido del presidente Recep Tayyip Erdogan, el Partido de Justicia y Desarrollo (AKP, por sus siglas en turco) como el Partido del Movimiento Nacionalista (MHP) votaron a favor de esta ley que, bajo el argumento de que “insultaba la historia y el pasado común del pueblo turco”, prohibía a los legisladores el uso del término “genocidio armenio”, así como las palabras “Kurdistán”, “Amed” (Diyarbakir) y “regiones kurdas”.1 Esta violencia simbólica ha tenido periodos de recrudecimien­ to y distensión en Turquía, en especial fue muy intensa en la década de 1930, cuando además de prohibir el uso de las palabras “kurdo” y “Kurdistán” a este pueblo se le negó cualquier derecho a la identidad y sus miembros fueron consi­ derados Dagli Türkler (turcos de las montañas). Su nombre fue borrado de artícu­ los, discursos, periódicos y libros de historia y el uso de su lengua se prohibió también en espacios públicos. Hoy Turquía se encuentra polarizada y hay grupos que demandan una solución pacífica al tema kurdo; sin embargo, grandes sectores de la burocracia turca, así como grupos nacionalistas, son particularmente agre­ sivos hacia el uso de estas palabras o hacia aquel que muestre en público la ban­ dera tricolor del Kurdistán, que tenemos como portada de este dossier. Pero así como la palabra Kurdistán es considerada un “insulto” a la historia y pasado turcos, según la Ley interna del Parlamento, el presidente Erdogan dijo, el pasado 22 de agosto en el Palacio Presidencial en Ankara, que la posible creación de un Estado kurdo en Irak —que podría suceder si el plebiscito por la indepen­ 1 Véase el artículo en línea: http://www.kurdistan24.net/en/news/ad5632af­652d­4aa6­aaa8­e6531115c7a8 5 Carlos ANtaramiÁN dencia del 25 de septiembre es afirmativo—,2 es igualmente “un insulto a nuestros hermanos kurdos”.3 En este discurso dijo que “sus hermanos kurdos” nunca per­ mitirían la creación de un Estado kurdo en el norte de Siria o el sur de Turquía, ya que “somos una nación en un país con una estructura unitaria […] Tenemos una sola bandera, una patria y un Estado […] Y mandaremos a los que quieran romper esta nación a la tumba”.4 Palabras prohibidas, amenazas directas. Parece­ ría que las autoridades turcas creen que si juzgan impropias o insultantes ciertas palabras o términos modificaran el mundo a su gusto. El artificio puede resultar contraproducente, porque puede generar interés por saber más sobre esas palabras, sobre ese Estado prohibido. Este dossier pretende satisfacer tal curiosidad. Como pieza de inicio para este número de Istor le pedimos al joven historia­ dor inglés Djene Rhys Bajalan, egresado de la Universidad de Oxford y actual profesor de la Universidad Estatal de Missouri, un artículo que sintetizara la milenaria historia kurda para un público que, debido a una lastimera falta de publicaciones sobre el tema en Hispanoamérica,5 no siempre puede tener una aproximación científica a la lectura del pasado kurdo en español. El texto “La historia kurda antes de 1918” logra este cometido al presentarnos de manera breve los debates sobre los mitos y leyendas de este pueblo, así como un repaso general de las teorías desarrolladas tanto en el mundo islámico como por acadé­ micos occidentales, o por los mismos kurdos sobre su origen; sobre la primera mención de su nombre en la época sasánida, sus complejas y diversas conversiones religiosas y un recuento de algunos de sus príncipes —entre ellos el célebre Sala­ dino—. El artículo también habla sobre el auge y la caída de las dinastías kurdas, el continuo cambio de los poderes externos que los gobernaban y otros episodios de la convulsa historia de este grupo. It was really an interesting statement to me; it made me think of two things, the first one is the intention behind this statement, while the second was the attitude of Kurds, especially Kurd musicians, towards researchers and researching. As for the first thing, I felt that there was a problem, maybe a social or psychological, of the Kurdish people in general, and the musicians in particular.

  • The Contemporary Roots of Kurdish Nationalism in Iraq
    THE CONTEMPORARY ROOTS OF KURDISH NATIONALISM IN IRAQ Introduction Contrary to popular opinion, nationalism is a contemporary phenomenon. Until recently most people primarily identified with and owed their ultimate allegiance to their religion or empire on the macro level or tribe, city, and local region on the micro level. This was all the more so in the Middle East, where the Islamic umma or community existed (1)and the Ottoman Empire prevailed until the end of World War I.(2) Only then did Arab, Turkish, and Iranian nationalism begin to create modern nation- states.(3) In reaction to these new Middle Eastern nationalisms, Kurdish nationalism developed even more recently. The purpose of this article is to analyze this situation. Broadly speaking, there are two main schools of thought on the origins of the nation and nationalism. The primordialists or essentialists argue that the concepts have ancient roots and thus date back to some distant point in history. John Armstrong, for example, argues that nations or nationalities slowly emerged in the premodern period through such processes as symbols, communication, and myth, and thus predate nationalism. Michael M. Gunter* Although he admits that nations are created, he maintains that they existed before the rise of nationalism.(4) Anthony D.     1 NEW INVESTIGATIONS IN THE ENVIRONMENT, HISTORY, AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE IRAQI HILLY FLANKS: SHAHRIZOR SURVEY PROJECT 2009–2011 By , , Ü, , , and 1 Recent palaeoenvironmental, historical, and archaeological investigations, primarily consisting of site reconnaissance, in the Shahrizor region within the province of Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan are bringing to light new information on the region’s social and socio-ecological development. This paper summarises two seasons of work by researchers from German, British, Dutch, and Iraqi-Kurdish institutions working in the survey region. Palaeoenvironmental data have determined that during the Pleistocene many terraces developed which came to be occupied by a number of the larger tell sites in the Holocene. In the sedimentary record, climatic and anthropogenic patterns are noticeable, and alluviation has affected the recovery of archaeological remains through site burial in places. Historical data show the Shahrizor shifting between periods of independence, either occupied by one regional state or several smaller entities, and periods that saw the plain’s incorporation within large empires, often in a border position. New archaeological investigations have provided insight into the importance of the region as a transit centre between Western Iran and northern and southern Mesopotamia, with clear material culture links recovered. Variations between periods’ settlement patterns and occupations are also beginning to emerge. Introduction In 2009, a joint team from the University of Heidelberg and the Directorate of Antiquities of Sulaymaniyah initiated an archaeological survey in the province of Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, in the region of the Shahrizor Plain. Since 2011, the Shahrizor Survey Project (SSP) has been joined by staff from University College London, focusing on historical and palaeoenvironmental research, and from Leiden University, investigating prehistoric periods.2 The survey area lies in the east of the province near the border with Iran.
