Founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and finally Manchester City in 1894. The club has played at the Etihad Stadium (formerly City of Manchester Stadium) since 2003, having played at Maine Road from 1923. The club's most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison. After losing the 1981 FA Cup Final, they went through a period of decline, culminating in relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history in 1998. In August 2008, they were purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group, resulting in the club becoming one of the richest in world football. In 2011, Manchester City qualified for the Champions League and won the FA Cup. In 2012, the club won the Premier League, their first league title for forty-four years. 3 Background on the Club Manchester Thunder is a netball team based in the North West who plays in the Netball Superleague, the most prestigious netball league in the northern hemisphere. These games are covered by Sky Sports which continues to heighten the awareness of netball as an exciting competitive team sport; games are broadcast weekly at prime time on Thursday evenings. Thunder are coached by retired England international, Tracey Neville, the twin sister of footballer Phil Neville and younger sister of Gary Neville. The team plays home matches at Wright Robinson Sports College which has recently been re- labeled as the Manchester Thunderdome to reflect their ambition in the upcoming superleague season. 4 Training Facilities The Platt Lane Complex is home to the Manchester City Football Club Youth Academy. The first team currently train in Carrington but are planning a move to a new £50m state-of-the-art facility close to their Sportcity home in East Manchester. Platt Lane, located in Fallowfield just 1.5 miles from the city centre, has been one of the club’s training facilities for decades and continues to play host to a number of Academy teams, some of which play their home matches here. The facility has two full size grass pitches and one full size 3G pitch (likely to be where you will have your session/s). There are also three 3G 5-a-side pitches (two indoor and one outdoor) for use in adverse weather conditions. The complex also has a City fitness gym and meeting rooms for use on a request basis. 5 Training Facilities Training facilities are available at M18, Wright Robinson Sports College. It is here that Thunder’s home games take place which has recently been re-labelled as the Thunderdome. Facilities include: multi-use double sports hall, 3G pitches, outdoor netball and tennis courts, dance studio, weight lifting room and seminar/meeting rooms. As Wright Robinson Sports College is a ‘working school’ availability is limited, especially during weekdays in term time. Therefore alternative facilities, including the Armitage Centre (part of Manchester University), are used as and when required. 6 Your Tailor-Made Package Includes: • Pre-departure information service • Return journey in executive air conditioned coach • Ground transportation for scheduled activities • 3 night’s at a 3* Hotel on the outskirts of Manchester (based on 2-4 sharing) • Full board to include dinner on day one (first meal); breakfast, packed lunch and dinner on days two and three; breakfast and packed lunch (final meal) on day four • 3 x training sessions on all aspects of play from the Manchester City FC community coaching staff at their Platt Lane facility (currently used by various Academy teams) • 3 x training sessions on all aspects of play from the Manchester Thunder full-time coaching staff (and possibly current players) at Wright Robinson Sports College (home of the ‘Thunderdome’) or The Armitage Centre (Manchester University facility) • 2 x pre-arranged football matches (per team) against local opposition • 2 x pre-arranged netball matches (per team) against local opposition • One Game of Ten Pin Bowling • Tour of Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium • Visit National Football Museum (Manchester City Centre) • Supervisory FREE places for the Sports Trip Organisers • Coach education opportunities for Sports Trip Organisers • Services of an inspiresport representative throughout the tour • Final printed itineraries Prices 40 Paying Players 45 Paying Players Per Player Per Player £385.00 £376.00 4 FREE Supervisory Staff 5 FREE Supervisory Staff Sports Tour Insurance Sports Tour Insurance £4.00 per person £4.00 per person 7 Manchester Package Optional Extras: What is Not Included: • Tickets and transport to a professional • Personal expenditure fixture • Refundable deposits requested on • Old Trafford Stadium & Museum Tour arrival by some accommodation providers • Trafford Centre Visit • Additional paying adults and single • Extended stay room supplements • Single room supplements • Additional charges for rooms • Sports Travel insurance • Additional matches 8 Manchester Package Guaranteed FREE places for Group Leaders Recognising the importance of safety and supervision for young person’s whilst travelling as a group, we are pleased to schools offer an attractive FREE place ratio. • Beitar and Beyond: the United Arab Emirates and Qatar’S Use of Football As Soft Power
POLICY OUTLOOK POLICY OUTLOOK DISCUSSION PAPER Beitar and Beyond: The United Arab Emirates and Qatar’s use of Football as Soft Power Anna Murphy (Howard Walker - Anadolu Agency) In 2008, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, formed the City Football Group as a branch of the private investment and development company known as the Abu Dhabi United Group to facilitate the purchase of English football team Manchester City F.C.. In 2012, Qatar Sports Investments, a subsidiary of the Qatar sovereign wealth fund, purchased the French team Paris Saint-Germain. In the decade since these acquisitions, Manchester City and PSG have become fascinating and lucrative examples of soft power for the two Gulf states. In September of 2020, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, a lesser-known member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, purchased a 50 per cent stake in Beitar Jerusalem F.C, an Israeli football team. This investment has shed light on the shifting economic relations between Israel and the UAE and highlighted the unique influence of football in Israeli politics. This policy outlook examines the UAE and Qatar’s investment in football clubs in Europe and Israel as two distinct and developing modes of soft power. E-mail: [email protected] Tel: +34 654966711. Accepted 3 December, 2010 The United Arab Emirates and Qatar both lack natural attractions, their system of governance is almost identical and their efforts at diversification are very similar. For this reasons, in order to compete with the rest of the world, the gulf countries are developing an assertive branding strategy focused on tourism targets, aviation, real estate and high class events and exhibitions in order to put their capitals (Abu-Dhabi and Doha) on the world tourism map. The key element in a successful branding strategy is not reflected by just the ambitious projects that Abu-Dhabi and Qatar are developing but it is, in fact, their image and their reputation that differentiate them from their neighbours. The focus of the present study is to shed light on the key factors featuring in the strategic branding of Abu Dhabi and Qatar by analysing their ways of practising branding as well as analysis of the leading news topics concerning Abu-Dhabi and Qatar in Google News for the year 2009. The aim of this work is to see whether these factors are sufficient for the creation of a distinctive brand.

When looking for sites for a new training ground, the club looked at Macclesfield but it wanted to remain in Manchester where the club’s heritage lies. The club first began discussing a ‘street to stadium’ concept in 1974 and it is now being realised.
